9
L is in words like light.
10
Okay.
11
So you can see the tip of my tongue here, it comes up to touch the top of my mouth and it kind of flops back down again.
12
It releases, okay.
13
And it creates this L, L, L sound.
14
Okay.
15
As in light.
16
Light.
17
Lucky.
18
Lucky.
19
Lovely.
20
Lovely.
21
And the last one, lonely.
22
lonely.
23
So what tends to happen here is whenever you have a L and then you have a vowel after it, you're probably going to get what's called the light L.
24
So the light L appears before vowel sounds.
25
Contrary to this, we have the dark L and this comes after a vowel sound.
26
So let's take a word Fall.
27
okay like the light l for la I hold it. For.
28
And don't keep the sound going, OK?
29
Don't say foo.
30
Okay, I hear a lot of students doing that.
31
You need to cut that sound, but keep your tongue in that position where it's touching the top of your mouth.
32
Okay, some people describe it where you're not really touching the top of your mouth, but a lot of the time it usually is.
33
So let's go back to our target word, fall.
34
or or or or okay you can see i'm not releasing it i'm holding it at the top of my mouth
35
fall full Another example is pull.
36
pull.
37
So I'm not releasing it, not pull.
38
Pull.
39
O.
40
poll.
41
Fool.
42
FULL -A.
43
Fool.
44
Fool.
45
hold it, okay?
46
This part stays at the top.
47
Fool.
48
And the last one, mole.
49
Mole.
50
I'm holding it.
51
Mole.
52
Mole.
53
Mole.
54
Let's have a practice in some sentences.
55
So I'm going to read the sentence and you just listen and repeat in your own time.
56
Do pause the video if you need a little bit more time.

「The Light L /l/ and Dark L [ɫ] in English」
