1
I was 18 years old when I got married.
2
I belonged to a very conservative family,
3
a Baloch family, where good daughters never say no to their parents.
4
My father wanted me to get married,
5
and all I said was,
6
if that makes you happy, I'll say yes.
7
And of course, it was never a happy marriage.
8
Just about after two years of getting married,
9
about nine years ago, I made a car accident Somehow my husband fell asleep And the car fell in the ditch
10
He managed to jump out,
11
saved himself I'm happy for him But I stayed inside the car
12
And I sustained a lot of injuries The list is a bit long
13
Radius ulna of my right arm were fractured The wrist was fractured Shoulder bone and collar bone were fractured.
14
My whole rib cage got fractured.
15
But that injury that changed me and my life completely was the spine injury.
16
Many people came to rescue.
17
They gave me CPR.
18
They dragged me out of the car.
19
And while they were dragging me out,
20
I got the complete transaction of my spinal cord.
21
Those two and a half months in the hospital were dreadful.
22
I was at the verge of despair.
23
One day doctor came to me and he said,
24
well, I heard that you wanted to be an artist,
25
but you ended up being a housewife.
26
I have a bad news for you.
27
You won't be able to paint again.
28
Next day doctor came to me and said,
29
your spine injury is so bad.
30
You won't be able to walk again.
31
I took a deep breath and I said, it's all right.
32
Next day, doctor came to me and said,
33
because of your spine injury and the fixation that you have in your back,
34
you won't be able to give birth to a child again.
35
That day, I was devastated.
36
I started to question my existence.
37
Why am I even alive?
38
So what kept me going was one day I asked my brothers I know I have a deformed hand
39
but I'm tired of looking at these white walls in the hospital
40
and wearing these white scrubs bring me some colors bring me some small canvas I want to paint
41
so the very first painting I made was on my dead
42
bed where I painted for the very first time what an
43
amazing therapy it was without uttering a single word I could paint my heart out.
44
I could share my story.
45
People used to come and say,
46
what lovely painting, so much color.
47
Nobody could see the grief in it.
48
Only I could.
49
And that day I decided that I'm going to live life for myself.
50
I am not going to be that perfect person for someone.
51
I am just going to take this moment and I will make it perfect for myself,
52
that I'm going to fight my fears.
53
So I wrote down one by one all those fears
54
and i decided
55
that i'm going to overcome these fears one at a time you know what was my biggest fear divorce
56
but the day i decided that this is nothing but my fear
57
i liberated myself by setting him free and i made myself emotionally
58
so strong that the day i got the news
59
that he's getting married I sent him a text that I'm so happy for you and I wish you all the best.
60
And he knows that I pray for him today.
61
Number two was, I won't be able to be a mother again.
62
And that was quite devastating for me.
63
But then I realized there are so many children in the world.
64
All they want is acceptance.
65
So there is no point of crying go and adopt one and that's what I did
66
I gave my name in different organizations different orphanages
67
and I waited patiently two years later I got this call
68
from a very small city in Pakistan I got a call in this
69
and are you money by Mazzari there is a baby boy
70
and would you like to adopt I could literally feel the labor pain yes yes I am going to adopt him.
71
I am coming to take him home.
72
And that day, I was two days old and today he's six.
73
You know when you end up being on the wheelchair,
74
what's the most painful thing?
75
People think that they will not be accepted by the people because we in the world of perfect people are imperfects.
76
So I decided to appear more in public.
77
I started to paint.
78
I have done a lot of modeling campaigns I decided
79
that I'm going to join the national TV of Pakistan as
80
an anchor person I became the national goodwill ambassador for UN women Pakistan
81
and now I speak for the rights of women children I
82
was featured in BBC hundred women for 2015 I'm one of Forbes 30 under 30 for 2016.
83
So when you accept yourself the way you are, the world recognizes you.
84
It all starts from within.
85
We have this amazing fantasy about life.
86
This is how things should work.
87
This is my plan.
88
It should go as per my plan.
89
If that doesn't happen, we give up.
90
I never wanted to be on the wheelchair.
91
Never thought of being on the wheelchair.
92
This life is a test and a trial.
93
And tests are never supposed to be easy.
94
So when you are expecting ease from life,
95
and life gives you lemons,
96
then you make the lemonade,
97
and then do not blame life for that.
98
It is okay to be scared.
99
It is okay to cry.
100
Everything is okay.
101
But giving up should not be an option.
102
They always say that failure is not an option.
103
Failure should be an option because when you fail, you get up.
104
And then you fail and then you get up and that keeps you going.
105
Embrace each and every breath that you are taking.
106
Celebrate your life.
107
Live it.
108
Don't die before your death.
109
Real happiness lies in gratitude.
110
So be grateful, be alive and live every moment.
111
Thank you.
