シャドーイング練習: Why Do You Need BOTH a MAC and IP Address? - 動画で英語スピーキングを学ぶ

1
Imagine ordering a package online.
2
To get that box delivered to your front door, the courier needs your physical mailing address, your city, postal code, street and house number.
3
But once the package actually arrives inside your home, how do you make sure it goes to you and not your roommate or family member?
4
It needs your name.
5
On the internet, every single device you own operates on this exact same two-tier system.
6
One address tells the world where you are located and the other tells your local network who you are.
7
So why do we need both a MAC address and an IP address?
8
Let's break it down step by step.
9
Let me start with the first one, the MAC address which stands for Media Access Control.
10
Think of your MAC address as your device's digital fingerprint or hardware ID.
11
It's a 12-digit hexadecimal number assigned directly by the manufacturer and permanently burned into your device's network interface card.
12
Because it is hardwired into the physical hardware, your MAC address never changes.
13
Whether you are connected to your home WiFi, a coffee shop in London, or an airport network in Tokyo, your laptop's MAC address remains identical.
14
In networking terms, the MAC address operates at layer 2, the data link layer.
15
Its job is strictly local.
16
It allows devices on the same physical network to talk directly to each other.
17
Your home router uses MAC addresses to distinguish your smartphone from your smart TV sitting right next to it.
18
If the MAC address uniquely identifies your device out of billions on earth, why can't we just use it for everything?
19
Enter the IP address, or internet protocol address.
20
If the MAC address is your device's permanent name, the IP address is its temporary mailing address.
21
Operating at layer 3, the network layer, its sole job is to route traffic across the global internet.
22
Unlike a MAC address, your IP address is not fixed.
23
It changes depending on where you connect.
24
When you are at home, your internet service provider assigns your network a specific IP address.
25
When you walk down the street to a local cafe and connect to their wifi, your phone gets assigned a completely different IP address.
26
Without IP addresses, internet routing would be completely impossible.
27
Imagine if postmen had to memorise the names of all 8 billion people on earth to deliver a letter, instead of just reading a street name and house number.
28
routing the global internet using only MAC addresses would be that same chaotic nightmare.
29
So how do these two addresses actually work together when you load a webpage?
30
Think of sending data across the internet like taking a flight with multiple layovers.
31
The IP address is your ultimate destination ticket.
32
It tells global routers which specific network in the world your data needs to travel to.
33
The MAC address handles the local transfer steps.
34
As your data hops from router to router across the globe, the IP address stays constant,
35
but the MAC address changes at every single local jump to move data from one hardware interface to the next.
36
Once the data packet finally reaches your home router, the router looks at the destination IP address and says,
37
great, this reached my network, but which specific device in this house does it belong to?
38
To solve this, your router uses a system called ARP, Address Resolution Protocol.
39
ARP translates that global IP address into the specific local MAC address of your laptop.
40
The router then hands the packet directly to your device.
41
So let's wrap it all up.
42
Your IP address is your global location.
43
It gets data to the right network.
44
Your MAC address is your device's permanent fingerprint.
45
It delivers that data to your exact screen.
46
IP brings the package to your front door.
47
Mac hands it directly to you.
48
What networking topic should we break down next?
