1
Hello everyone and welcome to the QLips English podcast.
2
My name is Andrew and if you're new here, QLips is a podcast for people who are learning English.
3
This is our simplified speech series and in this series, my co -hosts and I have real conversations in clear,
4
natural English that's just a little easier to follow.
5
And if we say an expression or a word or some culture comes up that might be new to you,
6
then we stop and explain it so that you can improve your English fluency.
7
Now, this is episode number 255, and we're talking about Halloween today.
8
Halloween is just around the corner, and that's what Indiana, my co -host, and I are going to discuss in this episode.
9
We'll get started with our conversation in a second, but before we do, I want to say something
10
because I live here in South Korea and for many Korean people and for me as well,
11
Halloween is a hard time of the year because of the terrible tragedy that happened a few years back,
12
the Itaewon crowd crush accident in 2022.
13
So on that night, a lot of young people lost their lives and actually,
14
to be honest, I haven't really celebrated Halloween since that time.
15
So my thoughts are really with everyone who lost someone on that horrible night.
16
However, Halloween is still a huge part of North American culture.
17
And teaching you about culture is a big part of what we do here at Q -Lips.
18
It's even in our name.
19
The C -U -L part of Q -Lips stands for culture.
20
Quiz question.
21
Do you know what the remaining part?
22
Well, it's kind of a blended word.
23
C -U -L for culture and L -I -P -S for lips, Q -L -I -P -S.
24
So we teach you about speaking English with your lips and also about the culture of English -speaking people.
25
And I have a lot of good memories about Halloween from growing up in Canada.
26
And so that's what Indiana and I are going to focus on more today.
27
Indiana, of course, lives in upstate
28
New York and Halloween is a big deal there.
29
So even if you didn't grow up with it,
30
this is a good episode for you because Indiana is going to tell us all about how she celebrates Halloween.
31
And I'll chip in with some memories that I have of celebrating Halloween as well.
32
And I think this will be a really fun episode.
33
And don't forget to follow along with the transcript and do the quiz after you listen.
34
You can do all of that in the QLips app,
35
and the link to check out the lesson in the app is in the description for this episode.
36
Okay, with that being said, it's time to get started with the conversation.
37
I hope you enjoy it.
38
Here we go.
39
joining me now all the way from new york state usa is my co -host indiana hello indiana how's
40
it going hey andrew happy spooky season it's almost halloween here and yeah i hope you're enjoying October there in Seoul.
41
Yeah, absolutely.
42
It's one of my favorite times of the year.
43
The weather is finally becoming bearable.
44
During the summer, it was just so hot this year and all the way into September, I felt like it was too hot.
45
And even like up until a week ago or so, I felt like it was too hot.
46
But finally, now that we're well into October, the temperature has dropped and the fall weather has just been beautiful.
47
So I love this time of the year.
48
I got to say, I think fall is my favorite season.
49
How about you?
50
Do you like fall as well?
51
I kind of have a feeling you're a fall person.
52
I definitely do.
53
As long as it's before the daylight savings ending time change, then it's all good.
54
But once that hits, I feel like it's winter and it's depressing.
55
But yeah, summer and fall are definitely my favorite seasons reasons.
56
Yeah, I guess maybe we could start our conversation just by talking about a basic question.
57
Do you enjoy Halloween?
58
Is it something that you look forward to?
59
Do you celebrate?
60
Do you participate?
61
What are your just general thoughts about Halloween?
62
I think it is so much fun to see all of the decorations.
63
People go so hard in at least the Northeast, I'm sure all over the country
64
but in my neighborhoods uh in my city all over the place in upstate new york you will see
65
so many front lawn decorations from like cute orange string lights to animatronic like
66
witches or monsters that if you walk by the front doorstep of someone's house,
67
they get triggered by the motion and start making horrible sounds or moving.
68
People spend so much money on these decorations.
69
And it's a lot of fun to see the neighborhoods liven up and get so festive like this.
70
It's similar to Christmas time where you see all the Christmas decorations, but some of those are really tacky, I find.
71
And I'm like, I don't know.
72
There's a lot of bad Christmas decorations.
73
The lights are nice, but Halloween is cool.
74
There's a lot of really spooky decorations
75
and it's fun to see the leaves change in color and then also all these cool decorations coming out onto people's lawns.
76
So I love that as an adult.
77
I mean, I don't, I'm not so creative about costumes.
78
I just can't seem to want to find the time to come up with a couple's costume for me and my husband.
79
We always go to our friend's Halloween party every year.
80
I've tried my best to be creative, but it's like such a chore for me.
81
So I'm kind of over that as an adult.
82
I like to watch scary movies or something, eat candy, give out candy to trick -or -treaters.
83
That's great.
84
But when I was a kid, oh my God, this is like definitely one of the best holidays for kids because you just get
85
a pillowcase full of candy.
86
It's like, who could ask for more?
87
It's the best.
88
So yeah, I definitely loved it as a kid.
89
But Andrew, what's your relationship to Halloween when you were a kid and now as an adult?
90
Yeah, I gotta say that I completely agree.
91
Hands down, Halloween is the best when you are a kid, and it's still a lot of fun even as an adult, I think however
92
when you are a kid
93
it is the best like I can't emphasize enough just how fun Halloween is like even at school
94
I remember being in elementary school and the whole school being decorated
95
and all of the students being so excited
96
and then Halloween day I remember we had a jack -o' -lantern carving competition in our school gymnasium
97
and my mom was there so I guess parents came as well
98
and doing activities like that wearing your costume to school
99
and then going home and waiting eagerly for nightfall to arrive
100
and then you could go out and go trick -or -treating I think nowadays
101
to me this is insane
102
and I don't know about your opinion about this Indiana I guess I understand why people do it
103
but I see a lot of families trick -or -treating during the daytime nowadays
104
and families especially with little kids you know they'll do it
105
while it's still daylight but for me
106
and in my area of Canada where I grew up
107
it was tradition you had to wait until it was dark
108
and as soon as it turned dark
109
then my parents would say okay guys off you go I would usually well
110
when you're really young you go with your parents
111
but once you get a little bit older then you go with your friends
112
and like you said indiana you have a pillowcase
113
that you would use to go
114
and collect your candy as you go from door to door
115
and like you mentioned a lot of people really go all out decorating their home for the halloween season
116
and so some homes would be really scary there'd be like skeletons
117
or scary jack -o' -lanterns or ghosts or whatever hanging around
118
and it would be almost scary to go and trick -or -treat
119
but yeah so much fun
120
and then afterwards after the trick -or -treating I would get home with my siblings
121
and sometimes my friends you dump out your pillowcase of candy
122
and see what you got
123
and then really really fun as well afterwards would be trading the candy
124
so like maybe my brother got some I don't know a Snickers and he doesn't like Snickers, but I love Snickers.
125
So I would trade some Smarties for his Snickers bar or something like that.
126
You'd trade candy and yeah, super, super fun.
127
So I have so many good memories of Halloween from when I was growing up.
128
I can't say enough just how fun it is.
129
Exactly.
130
Q -Lips is supported by our members.
131
Because of them, we can keep making lessons like this one.
132
So a huge thanks to all of our members.
133
Listening to English like you're doing right now is a great way to improve.
134
But listening doesn't exactly teach you how to speak.
135
To get better at speaking, you have to speak.
136
And for a lot of English learners, that's the hard part.
137
Maybe you don't have anyone to practice English with, or when you finally get the chance to speak,
138
you're nervous and the words just don't come out right.
139
Well, that's what our live classes are for.
140
Several times a week, QLips members meet on Zoom for a one -hour class with one of our amazing teachers.
141
We split into small groups of three to four people, so everyone gets a turn to.. talk
142
and there are classes for every time zone and members can join as many classes as they want
143
this week actually just yesterday a listener from montreal sent me a dm
144
and he told me that he's been listening on spotify since august
145
and then he became a member
146
and he took his first class with indiana yes the same indiana
147
that you're listening to right now and he told me that he really enjoyed and loved the class.
148
A yearly membership is $144, which is just $12 a month.
149
And for that, you'll get to join every class you want,
150
plus get access to all of our other helpful study tools and our member -only series and so, so much more.
151
And you'll be helping us keep the podcast going.
152
If it's not for you, then just email us within seven days and we'll give you a full refund.

155
And now, back to chatting about Halloween.
156
I have a bit of a gripe to share on this topic.
157
So first, you know, let me just quickly introduce for the uninitiated.
158
If you're not so familiar with North American Halloween culture, trick -or -treating is common for kids maybe up to age 14.
159
That's probably around the limit of when you would stop going trick -or -treating.
160
On Halloween night, you get dressed up in a costume with your friends,
161
and you go door -to -door to all of the houses in your neighborhood
162
that have their lights on or have decorations up, and knock on the door and say trick -or -treat,
163
and then the person that lives there will give you some candy and probably say, oh, what a cute ghost or oh,
164
what a spooky witch, especially if you're a little kid, they'll probably compliment how scary you are.
165
It's a very nice interaction that me and Andrew grew up with.
166
I'm afraid that it might be waning a little bit, like possibly due to urban myths and fears spread around.
167
I think there was this big social media scare a few years ago, specifically in California or especially in California,
168
about fentanyl being hidden in children's Halloween candy.
169
And it was totally myth busted.
170
Like, it's not a thing.
171
But I think these fears still persist about, like, scary strangers doing something terrible to your Halloween candy and trying to,
172
like, get your kids addicted to drugs or hurt your kids.
173
And it's simply, like, just groundless.
174
It's not a thing yet i think that this may be i'm just guessing
175
that this has contributed to there being a little bit less of trick -or -treaters there's fewer trick -or -treaters
176
that i've noticed out on halloween in past years
177
and then i think there's the trunk or treat and trunk
178
or treat is a recent um thing
179
that is often happening at schools where after school on halloween
180
or sometime during that week parents will all come together in the parking lot
181
and then they'll decorate the trunks of their cars and then put the candy in there.
182
And then the kids just circle around in the parking lot, visiting each trunk of each car, which to me, it just feels horrible.
183
It is not Halloween.
184
This is not trick or treating, but it's really popular.
185
I hear about it from a lot of my students with kids who are living in the U S like,
186
Oh, there's a trunk or treat event.
187
And it's like, Oh, it just rubs me the wrong way.
188
But yeah, so I'm, I'm a little bit afraid that some of our beautiful traditions with Halloween are on the decline.
189
I mean, the rumors of evil people poisoning or drugging children's candy,
190
that's nothing new because even when I was a kid, you know, your parents would say never eat any fruit
191
or never eat any unwrapped candy
192
because there were always rumors of like some people putting razor blades in apples
193
and then giving them to kids
194
so that's like a rumor that's existed for 30 40 50 years who knows yeah
195
and yeah I think it's groundless I think
196
that was just a rumor I've never really heard of that
197
but definitely I remember whenever I'd get my candy like I said
198
you dump it out dump your pillowcase out on the floor
199
and then my parents would always inspect it just to make sure
200
that there was nothing sketchy and maybe make me throw out some candy if it looked like it was homemade or something.
201
You know, sometimes you'd have some senior citizens,
202
some grandmas or something that would make some homemade candy or make a cookie or something and give it to you.
203
And my parents would always just throw that out, unfortunately, just because it's not safe.
204
So yeah, I think those rumors have been around for a long time, but trunk or treat, I don't know about this one.
205
This is the first time I'm hearing about it.
206
I wonder if that sprung up during COVID.
207
I bet. Who knows?
208
I'm not sure, but I'm not for it.
209
I'm a traditionalist when it comes to Halloween, I suppose. For sure.
210
And I hope, you know, I want to encourage anybody who has maybe recently moved to the US or Canada to like,
211
you know, push past these social media rumors.
212
These are groundless urban myths.
213
Like this is such a cool community experience.
214
Ask around about the best neighborhoods where there's like really great decorations, really great candy and take your kids trick -or -treating.
215
It's such a cool experience.
216
Like, don't be afraid.
217
Don't fall for these myths.
218
It's not real.
219
Indiana, did you ever have fireworks on Halloween?
220
Or was this just a regional thing?
221
I kind of feel like it might just be in the area of Canada near Vancouver,
222
where I grew up when I was a really young kid.
223
We used to have fireworks every Halloween.
224
Did you do this at all?
225
No, not at all.
226
I'm not sure if I ever remember even like hearing fireworks on Halloween in the distance or anything like that.
227
No. Yeah.
228
So I lived on a cul -de -sac and a cul -de -sac is like, do you call them cul -de -sacs in America as well?
229
Do you use that?
230
Yeah.
231
Okay. For sure.
232
And so a cul -de -sac is just a street that's a dead end street.
233
But at the end of the road, it's like a circle and you'll have five or six houses that go around that circle.
234
That's a cul -de -sac.
235
So I lived on a cul -de -sac and I guess every Halloween or around Halloween,
236
because I couldn't see us doing this on a Wednesday night if Halloween fell on a Wednesday.
237
But I don't know, perhaps we did it on a weeknight as well.
238
But after trick -or -treating, then maybe it was just like one of my neighbors was a weird guy who liked to light off fireworks.
239
I'm not sure, but we'd have a little fireworks display, just the few homes that were on that cul -de -sac together.
240
So that's something that I remember.
241
And also I remember it being pretty loud and scary because I was just like seven, eight years old.
242
So it was a little bit frightening for me.
243
But yeah, I have that memory of seeing fireworks and having a fireworks show after trick or treating.
244
That's cool.
245
That sounds like a special memory.
246
Yeah, I think that might be unique to your neighborhood.
247
Very sweet.
248
Very cool yeah so these days you're not a costume wearer I'm a little bit disappointed to hear
249
that it's such it's such a fun part of Halloween as
250
an adult is wearing a costume although I gotta say
251
that I don't dress up either so I can't really blame you
252
but do you do anything for a costume like even just
253
like kind of how can I say half -assed costume anything like
254
that yeah I think if you're gonna go to a party Halloween party as an adult
255
or a child you've got to wear something
256
so yeah sometimes it's a little more half -assed than other tears like I have my backup
257
I would say is I have this sort of red dress that's kind of like,
258
you could call it bodycon.
259
It's like fitting the contours of your body.
260
It's kind of a tight dress, but then it has these flowy sleeves and it's dark red.
261
It has these black lace -up bodice.
262
Hard to describe fashion.
263
Hard to do this in English, even though this is my native language.
264
There are these black ribbons lacing up the chest bodice area.
265
So it's kind of a little bit sexy, I would say.
266
So it's perfect for like a sexy vampire or a sexy pirate.
267
Like it could kind of go either way depending on what accessories you had.
268
So that's like pretty easy to work with.
269
And then on the other hand, I have this really ridiculous frog onesie that like my husband ordered me as a gag gift one year.
270
And it's like pajamas, basically.
271
A onesie is like a, usually for babies, a full body outfit that you have to take off your entire body.
272
And it has a little hood with frog, a frog face.
273
So I can always just kind of throw that on and, well, I'm a frog.
274
Absolute minimum effort I could possibly put into it.
275
But one costume I'm pretty proud of from a few years ago.
276
So you're going to know this, Andrew, because you love music.
277
I was David Byrne from Stop Making Sense.
278
So I slipped slicked back my hair.
279
I have short hair.
280
I don't know if everybody knows that I have very short hair.
281
So I slicked it back.
282
I went to a thrift store to find the biggest gray suit I could possibly find.
283
I patted it, patted it out to make it sort of look like David Byrne in Stop Making Sense.
284
Listeners definitely look up David Byrne, Stop Making Sense to get an idea of this costume.
285
And I think I looked pretty spot on.
286
It was pretty cool.
287
And then I had my husband put a lampshade on his head
288
and wear like all black so that he was the lamp that he dances with on stage during
289
This Must Be the Place.
290
So that was a pretty niche but cool costume I was pretty proud of.
291
I put a lot of effort into that.
292
And then like my friends were like, yeah, cool.
293
But like, I didn't get the praise I was hoping for.
294
So then I was just like, why would I put effort into this if you're not going to say, oh man, cool costume.
295
I was a little, a little upset about the, the lack of attention for it.
296
Cause I was like, man, I went to all these thrift stores.
297
Yeah.
298
Oh, it sounds like a great costume.
299
And yeah, for listeners who don't know this reference, David Byrne is the singer from a band called the Talking Heads,
300
famous American band from, I guess, the 70s and 80s.
301
And yeah, they have this famous concert film called Stop Making Sense.
302
And in that film, David Byrne is wearing this huge business suit, this very, very, very oversized business suit.
303
And when he dances around on the stage, it just looks ridiculous, but also extremely cool at the same time.
304
So that's an awesome costume.
305
I wish I had thought of that one myself back in the day.
306
That's such a good idea.
307
Yeah, it was cool.
308
But I guess that's the costume in recent years I'm most proud of.
309
It was also a great gag in middle school.
310
I dressed up one year as Indiana Jones.
311
Haha, that's, you know, my name.
312
So everybody likes that one.
313
um
314
but how about you Andrew do you have any iconic costumes from your life
315
you could recount for us uh let me
316
I remember being maybe a cowboy was one of my very first costumes
317
when I was like four years old I remember dressing up as a cowboy
318
and then in grade school I remember being a teenage mutant ninja turtle
319
and my mom
320
and I worked on making the costume together we built like the turtle shell from cardboard
321
so that one was a cool one nice
322
when i was a little bit older i remember my friend
323
and i we both went as crossword puzzles
324
so we just wore white clothes
325
and we like just wrote a bunch of random letters all over them
326
and then we attached a pen to ourselves with a piece of string
327
and people could try and find a word and circle it
328
that was like when we were in university and we'd always go to concerts.
329
As you get older, Halloween turns from a fun family -based activity,
330
I think, to like a really party -heavy day.
331
So especially when I was a university student, every Halloween would be a big party day, a house party, often with bands playing music,
332
and they would always cover other people's music.
333
There were no originals, it was always a cover concert
334
so people learning
335
and playing other bands music kind of like dressing up in a costume in a musical way
336
so that was always really fun yeah I remember being that
337
crossword puzzle and that was a really popular one people like to come up
338
and try and find a word and circle it
339
and what else uh again with the same friend one time I think it was right after the launch of the iPad,
340
my friend looks a lot like Steve Jobs.
341
So he dressed up as Steve Jobs and nailed it.
342
He looked exactly like Steve Jobs.
343
And I thought it would be funny to be an iPad.
344
So I dressed up as an iPad and we walked around together.
345
And that one was also really popular for some reason.
346
Yeah.
347
I mean, I haven't dressed up in several years.
348
I don't really celebrate Halloween now that I live in Korea, unfortunately.
349
It's just not as much of a thing here, so I don't get to celebrate it the same way that I did back in Canada,
350
but still I have a really fond place for the holiday
351
in my heart just from all of those great memories I had growing up.
352
That's cool.
353
I really like the crossword puzzle idea.
354
Something interactive for a costume is hard to pull off
355
that sounded like a really good one yeah
356
and I remember I remember one of the last halloweens
357
that I spent in Canada was at a house party where my band was playing
358
and I was dressed up like a dinosaur I had this really ridiculous dinosaur costume
359
and I remember trying to play guitar
360
and sing dressed up like a dinosaur it was hard but it was a lot of fun oh my god
361
Yeah, good times.
362
Good times.
363
Absolutely.
364
Well, Indiana, should we leave things here?
365
Was there anything else that you wanted to mention about Halloween this year?
366
Yeah, the only thing that I wanted to bring up,
367
just specifically for anybody living in the United States or Canada who you are living in a neighborhood,
368
you're starting to see these Halloween decorations popping up.
369
And either you're thinking, oh, this is so great.
370
I want to give out candy to trick -or -treaters.
371
I want to participate.
372
Or maybe you're thinking, oh, this is not for me.
373
Like, I do not want people ringing my doorbell.
374
No, thank you.
375
I'm busy or I just don't want to talk to everybody.
376
So if you are interested in participating in Halloween and giving out candy to trick -or -treaters, you definitely want to keep your front lights on,
377
maybe your porch lights, the lights in the front of your house.
378
and make sure you have some degree of decoration.
379
That shows that your house is welcoming trick -or -treaters,
380
even just a little bit of like the orange string lights or a pumpkin or two with or without the carved faces,
381
maybe a few decorations from the Halloween store, which they always have these pop -up stores that appear in a lot of cities.
382
So just having a few things in the lawn to show, okay, this is a house that is like participating in Halloween,
383
make it look a little spooky and keep some lights on to show that you're home.
384
Now, it's the opposite.
385
If you do not want to participate, keep your lawn free and clear of all decorations.
386
And even if you're going to be home that night, try to keep your couple front lights off,
387
like the porch lights or that lights in the front of your house.
388
Keep those off and, you know, maybe stay on the second floor or in the back of the house
389
and hang out there because I think that is a clear indicator.
390
Okay, this house is not engaging in it.
391
Make it look like no one's home and then people will not come to your house.
392
But I thought I would mention that in case it's not super clear.
393
Do I have to participate in Halloween?
394
No, you definitely don't.
395
But you want to make your house look a certain way
396
if you are or are not going to participate with the trick -or -treaters.
397
Yeah, absolutely.
398
Turning your lights off your outdoor lights that's the classic signal
399
that is a waste of time as a trick -or -treater to walk up
400
that driveway and knock on the door because nobody's home
401
or they don't want to participate so yeah
402
that would always be the signal for me
403
when I was a trick -or -treater oh the lights are off okay I'm gonna skip
404
that home for sure Indiana we'll leave just with a fun question here to wrap things up
405
and to sign off and I'm wondering what was your favorite candy to receive when you used to go trick -or -treating?
406
Oh, such a good question.
407
Let me think about that.
408
I really loved Nerds candy.
409
I found it so fun to have that tiny, tiny box of Nerds, which are just these little clusters of sugar.
410
Oh, those were so fun to eat.
411
What else?
412
I've always loved gummy candy.
413
Anything gummy related was great for me.
414
The tiny Haribo packets or yeah, pretty much anything.
415
I think the only thing I didn't like was something with peanut butter in it.
416
I know I'm a weirdo, but peanut butter and chocolate, I just like could live without.
417
I'm maybe the only person on the planet who's over peanut butter and chocolate.
418
My favorite.
419
I know.
420
I know.
421
It's weird.
422
Well, yeah, something gummy related, maybe the Nerds candies.
423
Yeah, those were great.
424
What do you think?
425
What was your favorite? it well in my neighborhood we had this one home
426
which was like four times bigger than all of the other homes
427
and it was on the top of this little hill
428
so we always nicknamed that home the rich guy like the rich guy lived in
429
that house it was just a couple an older couple and they had no children
430
and they were very mysterious like they never really interacted with the other neighbors at all
431
they were just up there on their hill in their big house like to us
432
it would have been a mansion I'm sure it was just kind of slightly bigger, slightly fancier house than all the other houses in the neighborhood.
433
But on Halloween, we'd get to go to the rich guy's house and trick or treat.
434
And he never disappointed.
435
He'd always give us full cans of Coca -Cola.
436
So we'd get a full can of Coca -Cola and a full chocolate bar.
437
Not like the mini chocolate bar that you would get.
438
You know, the trick or treat size candy bar that's one third or a quarter the size of a regular chocolate bar.
439
He'd give us a full chocolate bar.
440
So like a full size Twix or Snickers or something.
441
And so that was just incredible.
442
He never disappointed.
443
So, yeah, I always loved going to the rich guy's house on the hill.
444
He was awesome.
445
Moms hate him.
446
Like not only are you getting candy, but caffeinated soda.
447
Oh, my gosh yeah that's crazy we'd always scheme like how can we go to this guy's house again like
448
if we change our costume will he recognize us could we hit him up twice
449
because he was so generous
450
so yeah shout out to the rich guy oh that's nice all right
451
so we'll wrap things up here guys thank you
