1
Improving at the game of basketball for most players feels like a long and slow process.
2
Especially if they don't know what they're doing.
3
But that doesn't have to be the case with you.
4
My success came from five core principles that completely changed how I trained and how I thought about the game.
5
If you take this serious,
6
you'll start improving so fast it feels unfair.
7
And the best part is,
8
any basketball player can do this.
9
Let's get into it!
10
The difficulty of your workout schedule should be equal to the size of your goals.
11
If you want to be great,
12
you can't live the same way average people would.
13
During my sophomore year of high school,
14
I struggled to get any playing time on varsity.
15
I rode the bench the entire year,
16
except towards the end of the season.
17
I was subbed into one of our division rivalry games because our star player got into early foul trouble.
18
So I took his spot.
19
Now that was surprising.
20
But what I didn't tell you,
21
and what most people didn't see,
22
is that behind the scenes,
23
for that entire season, I worked out two to three times a day,
24
every single day of the year.
25
Shoot, man, I didn't even hang out with my friends that much during my high school years.
26
Like, I didn't have time to waste.
27
It's a sacrifice.
28
But depending on the level of your goal,
29
it requires an equal amount of sacrifice.
30
You have to sacrifice everything that gets in your way.
31
Now that you understand what it takes to be great,
32
let me help you get there.
33
Principle number one is have a plan.
34
One of my favorite authors,
35
Napoleon Hill, has a quote.
36
Plan your work and work your plan.
37
Before my sophomore year, all of my basketball workouts were based on what I felt like I should work on.
38
I never wrote down a workout plan or anything like that.
39
I just winged it.
40
Shockingly, not having a plan didn't go well.
41
I wasn't improving my skills effectively.
42
Let's think about this.
43
Over time, if we don't train a specific skill, that skill gets worse.
44
If you don't practice shooting for an entire month,
45
let's say your shooting attribute goes down by 5.
46
On the other hand, for a month,
47
if you train shooting every single day,
48
it may improve by 5.
49
See, bodybuilders know this, and they structure their workouts in such a way
50
that they hit every muscle group they need to in their workouts.
51
If they work out upper body on Mondays,
52
on Tuesdays, they'll hit legs, for example.
53
Or they'll never hit legs,
54
because legs is not fun.
55
But each workout for upper body
56
or lower body is different in order to hit the muscles that they didn't hit the last time they worked out.
57
So now understanding this principle,
58
you need to plan your workouts accordingly.
59
For this example, let's say shooting is your biggest weapon.
60
You need to practice shooting every day.
61
But to make sure you're not a one-dimensional player,
62
you need to incorporate training in different skills.
63
Here's an example of a training schedule that you can use for yourself.
64
Sundays are going to be your rest day.
65
Monday to Saturday, have a shooting workout.
66
Ball handling will be on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
67
Finishing will be on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
68
So on every single day,
69
you're working two completely different skill sets,
70
but you're always getting your shooting work in.
71
Now if that sounds overwhelming to you, I get it.
72
Trying to figure out how to plan your workouts,
73
track your progress, and really to just stay on top of things is hard.
74
Here's my solution.
75
You may have seen bodybuilders tracking their progress,
76
tracking their workouts, and self-assessing themselves with their training journals, right?
77
Well, now you can track your goals,
78
you can track your workouts,
79
your game performances, your confidence levels,
80
and so much more with the 365-day basketball training journal.
81
This is my attempt at creating a solution for basketball players that struggle with tracking their workouts,
82
tracking their progress with basketball,
83
because nobody has given us a roadmap for it.
84
And everybody just says, oh,
85
well, you know, you got to be consistent and you got to have a plan.
86
Like, yes, but how can we actually execute on a plan and create that for ourselves?
87
This is the way to do it.
88
By the way, I never realized how frustrating publishing a book was until now.
89
Like, wow.
90
Anyway, if you are interested in getting one for yourself,
91
click the top link in the description.
92
Now, some of y'all might also be thinking,
93
oh, well, you know, that's great and all,
94
but I still have to plan the workouts and everything.
95
I don't know how to make a workout schedule for myself and everything.
96
Look, I have basketball workouts on that same page.
97
So when you buy a training journal,
98
you can get half off on either one of the collections or the bundles of all the different workout sets,
99
whether it be shooting, passing, ball handling or finishing.
100
You can get one of those for yourself.
101
You get the beginner all the way up to the advanced levels
102
and you can use those workouts to help you progress in your basketball journey Once again 50% off
103
if you get it with the journal.
104
All right, man I know that was a lot of yap,
105
but I hope this helps y'all.
106
I love y'all boys Let's get back to the video multiple
107
short workouts are much better than one long training session Let's
108
say we had two basketball players all variables are the same such as their height weight body type sleep diet,
109
etc Everything is the same.
110
If both players spent the same amount of total time training per week,
111
but one player had one long session three days a week,
112
while the other split his workouts into multiple shorter sessions and trained six days a week,
113
who's going to improve faster?
114
My guess would be the guy who split his workouts into multiple shorter sessions.
115
He can get more out of every training session.
116
If you have a three hour long intense basketball workout,
117
you will be exhausted about halfway through or at least not at your peak in about an hour.
118
The next two hours of the workout may be beneficial for like your mental toughness
119
but the quality of your reps will be diminished.
120
To add on to my reasoning,
121
muscle memory is crucial in basketball.
122
Have you ever come back from spring break to the first practice and forgot how to dribble a basketball?
123
To improve fast at basketball,
124
you need to reinforce your muscle memory as much as humanly possible.
125
I'll give you an analogy and I hope it makes sense.
126
Whenever you train, basketball touches certain spots in your brain to activate it.
127
The more touch points you give it, the better.
128
This is the method Kobe Bryant used to surpass everyone as a kid.
129
But it's simple, like if you do the math on this, right?
130
Like if you're thinking about how often kids are playing,
131
if you wanna be a great player,
132
if you play every single day,
133
two, three hours, every single day,
134
over the course of a year,
135
how much better are you getting?
136
Most kids will play maybe,
137
you know, an hour and a half, two days a week.
138
All it took was one summer of splitting his workouts throughout the day and staying consistent.
139
And by that point, shoot,
140
it was too late for everybody else.
141
Now, understanding those two principles alone will already help you improve faster than most basketball players.
142
But if you don't apply this next principle,
143
you are missing out on something that could really accelerate your growth.
144
All right, so principle number three is something that I used even back in middle school,
145
but I went about it in the wrong way for years,
146
and it wasn't until this year when I figured it all out.
147
You must set tangible goals.
148
What the heck is a tangible goal?
149
The definition of tangible is perceptible by touch, clear and definite, real.
150
The definition of a goal is the object of a person's ambition or effort,
151
an aim or desired result.
152
Now for something to be a tangible goal,
153
it must have the ability to be measured and be perceptible by touch.
154
You can't say, oh my goal is to be the best basketball player I can be,
155
because that isn't measurable and that's not tangible.
156
That is an effect of tangible work,
157
but that's not really a goal.
158
Instead ask yourself, what do I have to do in order to become the best basketball player I can be?
159
Then, based on your answers, set your goals.
160
For example, I will train X amount of hours a day,
161
Y days a week, with Z amount of intensity.
162
Let me reiterate the part when I said tangible goals can be measured and perceptible by touch.
163
You can measure stats.
164
You can measure progress.
165
You can't measure emotion.
166
Reclaring that you'll become the best player you can be is an empty promise.
167
Because you'll never know if you became the best player you can possibly be.
168
Your potential is limitless.
169
For a goal to be perceptible by touch,
170
it must be something that has a specific destination or moment when you can say,
171
I achieved this.
172
I accomplished what I set out to do.
173
Being the best you can be is an ongoing process.
174
And it never ends until you stop playing.
175
Tangible goals are in your control.
176
There are no outside factors in play.
177
The only thing that will stop you from achieving your goals is you.
178
And that is the greatest game to play.
179
Principle number four, you must experiment in pickup and offseason games.
180
That is the time to add to your bag and become a better player overall.
181
You can take the time to learn what works and what doesn't.
182
But most basketball players are so afraid to make a mistake in organized basketball.
183
Understandably so.
184
You know, they fear making a mistake,
185
getting subbed out, and having to ride the bench the rest of the game
186
because the coach has a short leash on them.
187
That's understandable.
188
But the great players don't have to worry about that because even if they make 20 mistakes,
189
they won't get subbed out.
190
So if you're tired of getting subbed out because you made one mistake,
191
you got to become so good that the coach has to play you.
192
My dad has always been in my corner,
193
but there's one thing that he will never let me get away with.
194
That being having a victim mindset.
195
My dad and I had long conversations about how I wasn't getting playing time and that I deserve more,
196
blah, blah, blah.
197
But one day, my dad said something to me that I've carried with me into the rest of my life,
198
including you two.
199
He said, if you are working as hard as you can and you're not getting the results you want,
200
you're probably working the wrong way.
201
He described to me that I was so intense and
202
that I could never relax in games and that was holding me back.
203
He taught me to work harder than everyone in practice but develop the emotional control to drop the tenseness during games.
204
That's how I play my best.
205
So step one, become so good that your coach has to play you and step two,
206
let go and have fun and step three,
207
experiment in games and try new things.
208
This final principle is what will keep your success intact.
209
If you follow the principles outlined in this video,
210
you will grow to be very successful.
211
And that's great.
212
But if you don't have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ,
213
I can tell you from personal experience,
214
your life will come crashing down.
215
Here's a passage from the gospel according to Matthew chapter 16 verse 24 to 28.
216
Then Jesus told his disciples,
217
if anyone would come after me,
218
let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
219
For whoever would save his life will lose it,
220
but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
221
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?
222
For what shall a man give in return for his soul?
223
For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father,
224
and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.
225
Truly I say to you,
226
there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.
227
Amen.
228
My interpretation of that last line is that people will never taste the death of their false selves,
229
or in other words, their ego, until they meet Jesus.
230
Paul tells us that we must die to ourselves daily.
231
Now, I don't know about y'all,
232
but that is tough for me to know.
233
When I was younger, I believed
234
that becoming a great basketball player would solve all my problems and I would become a new person.
235
But no, I was the same old person with the same old problems,
236
but I was good at basketball.
237
Little did I know that if anyone is in Christ,
238
old things are passed away.
239
Behold, all things become new.
240
Look to Jesus Christ, trust in him,
241
and he will fill that void in your heart.
242
If you're anything like me,
243
I know you feel like something is missing in your life.
244
You're doing all the right things,
245
but you just feel off.
246
God is calling you.
247
Answer the call and surrender your life to Jesus Christ when you feel ready.
248
He will wait as long as it takes.
249
He loves you and wants the best for you.
250
And so do I.
251
Hey, remember to check the top link in the description for the training journal and all the other basketball training programs.
252
Now that you know how to improve so fast at basketball that it feels unfair,
253
be sure to click this video to get 10 years of basketball advice in just 10 minutes.
