1
Let me ask you a question.
2
What's most likely the very first thing you're going to do when you find yourself bored?
3
Is it going outside for a run?
4
Is it spending time on some hobbies?
5
Is it working on your goals and aspirations?
6
Well, it most likely looks something along the lines like this.
7
In this day and age,
8
it almost feels as if social media is necessary in navigating the current years of our lives.
9
Yet, it almost feels as if we're constantly screwing away,
10
the most important years of our lives instead.
11
So let me ask you a question.
12
A question that might sound ridiculous at first.
13
If you have the chance to live a life completely free and away from social media, would you?
14
At the start of high school,
15
I got my first ever phone, an iPhone SE.
16
And I was super hyped to finally be able to play Geometry Dash and Clash of Clans whenever and wherever I wanted.
17
But in high school, games like these were no longer the hottest thing out there anymore,
18
as there was this new thing that everyone had started to use.
19
Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, social media.
20
And since everyone else was using them,
21
it kind of felt like I had to use them too,
22
so I installed them.
23
And I can't even lie,
24
those times back then were actually pretty fun.
25
It was pretty fun to be able to talk to my friends whenever and wherever I wanted,
26
to follow people who shared the same singular brain cell as me,
27
and I honestly felt more connected than ever before.
28
But while all this was happening,
29
there was unfortunately a very bad side effect that began to take place.
30
I don't exactly remember when,
31
but I suddenly developed a habit of endlessly scrolling on my phone.
32
Whenever I woke up, I would grab my phone and scroll.
33
Whenever I got home, I would scroll.
34
Whenever there was any sort of empty space where absolutely nothing was happening at all,
35
was happening at all, I would grab my phone and scroll.
36
And this type of scrolling wasn't doing anything.
37
I wasn't learning, excited, or interested.
38
I was just mindlessly wasting hours of my time on other people's lives.
39
From the outside looking in,
40
it was clearly a problem.
41
But since everyone else was doing it,
42
I really didn't think much of it at all,
43
and thought it was completely normal.
44
But this pattern of behavior spiraled into something even worse in the years that followed.
45
After graduating and having a really depressing first year in university,
46
I was completely lost with what the hell I was going to do with my life,
47
and ended up taking a year off.
48
Now imagine that suddenly, instead of having classes,
49
studying, or meeting up with others,
50
you had all the free time in the world.
51
What would you do with it?
52
Well, for me, it didn't change.
53
The scrolling had gotten even worse,
54
as I was constantly on my phone to distract myself from all the problems I've avidly tried to avoid,
55
and started to feel sluggish,
56
tired, and unmotivated to do absolutely anything.
57
Obviously the scrolling itself was already bad,
58
but the stuff I was scrolling,
59
looking at all these people sharing their extravagant lives online.
60
What does that even mentally do to someone?
61
I started constantly comparing my life with others.
62
Hey look, someone's partying in university.
63
This person's in a perfect relationship.
64
This person's traveling across the world.
65
This person looks as if they have everything I've figured out.
66
While I was in my bed,
67
scrolling at 1 in the morning, feeling absolutely worthless.
68
I knew this was a problem,
69
but my identity, friendships, almost everything was deeply rooted on social media,
70
and it felt impossible to leave it all behind.
71
But as the days kept blurring away,
72
I finally realized that I couldn't keep repeating the cycle,
73
and needed to make a change.
74
Looking at myself in the mood,
75
I finally make the decision that, you know what?
76
This isn't worth it anymore.
77
I'm done.
78
The first few weeks without social media were whack, I can't even lie.
79
All of a sudden, I had time.
80
Way too much time.
81
But now I was completely bored out of my mind,
82
since I no longer got that simple fix through scrolling anymore.
83
But after a while, I realized that being bored is actually a good thing,
84
where curiosity, imagination, thinking, and reflection can all happen.
85
And with all that time now,
86
I guess I finally had to deal with all those questions I've actively tried to avoid head on,
87
search for meaning, and ultimately find things to do.
88
And as a result, I discovered new new hobbies,
89
new passions, new goals to achieve,
90
reignited old hobbies, and learned a lot about myself,
91
about who I am, and about what I wanted to do in the future.
92
For the first time in years,
93
I finally got around to doing a lot of the things I said I was going to do.
94
I finally had energy and felt motivated to do things,
95
and it honestly felt like I was finally participating in this game called life.
96
And honestly, all of this was possible because I was no longer distracted.
97
My attention span was finally fixed to where I could finally sit down and think,
98
finally work on something without constantly grabbing my phone,
99
finally find new things to do whenever I felt bored, I finally felt.. alive.
100
Another thing I was worried about when I first deleted social media was phone,
101
the fear of missing out.
102
I was afraid that if I deleted social media,
103
I would miss out on important things and be completely out of the loop on what was happening with my friends,
104
others, and everything around the world.
105
And I definitely felt that.
106
But then, hours would pass,
107
days would pass, weeks, months,
108
and I finally realized I was missing out on what?
109
Stupid trends, some celebrities, other people's lives.
110
Like these pieces of information were totally irrelevant and literally did not change or affect my life in any single way.
111
So when facing FOMO, I guess it's important to remember
112
that every second we spend on social media is also another second we miss out on actual, real life.
113
Another thing that also worried me was all those people I would lose contact with.
114
But after deleting social media,
115
it turns out that out of all those 500 or something followers,
116
the truth was that most of them weren't really my friends
117
and didn't even know I deleted social media in the first place.
118
Liking and commenting on someone's post or story doesn't make you friends.
119
Your real friends will always have your back
120
and find a way to maintain that connection with you regardless of if you had social media or not.
121
And even though I might not be as updated anymore,
122
those bonds I share with my friends whenever I see them,
123
honestly feel more stronger and more genuine than ever.
124
After all, true connection is informed through a strain, but through reality.
125
But by far the biggest benefit I've felt from deleting social media has been my mental health.
126
My life now sometimes genuinely feels like a character straight out of a gibbon.
127
just by simply enjoying all the little things in it.
128
From simply taking walks outside,
129
to eating breakfast by the balcony,
130
to late conversations with friends,
131
like, every small thing just feels so real and enjoyable.
132
And instead of constantly sharing every single thing that happens in my life,
133
I can finally now just live in the present
134
and just enjoy the moment giving this feeling of peace and tranquility like never before.
135
I also as a whole just feel genuinely happier now without it.
136
And part of that could be because I was no longer constantly exposed to other people's lives.
137
Now I wasn't comparing myself with others anymore.
138
And honestly now that when I think of it,
139
I realized how most of what's on social media is legitimately fake.
140
Like I remember there was this one time where my friends posted something,
141
seemingly having the time of their lives that day,
142
but then messaged me how sick,
143
dead, and bored they were the entire day.
144
Like, what you see on social media ain't reality, bruh.
145
With all this nonsense gone,
146
my mind finally feels way more at ease now.
147
Those anxious feelings I have are no longer there.
148
And instead of focusing on others,
149
I could finally use that energy to finally focus on my own life
150
while accepting and being grateful for what I already have instead of comparing and wishing that I had something else.
151
After all, comparison is the thief of joy.
152
Even though social media definitely has its upside,
153
the way we use it most likely just isn't healthy.
154
It used to be this fun thing to connect with others,
155
but now it seems like it has taken away our time,
156
motivation, interests, mental health, and the social essence of how real human connection is formed.
157
It has honestly gotten to a point where it seems like nowadays everyone is glued to their phones.
158
Kids on their phones instead of playing outside.
159
Couples on their phones instead of talking about life.
160
Friends on their phones instead of having a a good time,
161
and unfortunately it's happening everywhere.
162
Deleting social media has reminded me that there's a lot of life to be lived outside your phone.
163
That simple things like living in the present,
164
pursuing your passions, making memories,
165
those are the things that truly matter in life.
166
So if I was to ask you a question,
167
a question that might have sounded ridiculous at first,
168
If you had the chance to live a life completely free and away from social media, would you?
169
Well, for me, the answer is yes.
170
you
