They're small.

They're mostly silent.

But they're the deadliest animal on Earth.

Not because of a bite that causes an irritating itch, But because of what that bite can carry,

mosquitoes spread diseases like malaria,

dengue, Zika, and West Nile virus to hundreds of millions of people every year.

That's why understanding how a mosquito grows, feeds, and behaves isn't just biology.

It's the foundation of how scientists track outbreaks, design solutions to stop the spread of mosquito-related diseases,

and identify weaknesses in their life cycle to control their populations.

Stage 1.

Egg.

It all starts with water.

A female mosquito lays her eggs on the surface of stagnant water, a pond or puddle, a clogged gutter, an old tire, a container,

or even a flower pot left out after rain.

Many species lay eggs in rafts of 100 or more.

Others lay them one at a time, just above the waterline, built to survive drying out and hatch later when it rains.

Within a day or two, given the right conditions, the eggs hatch.

Stage 2.

Larvae.

Hatching from each egg is a mosquito larva, sometimes called a wriggler.

It lives entirely in water, breathing through a tube at the surface while it feeds on algae and organic debris below.

The larvae molt several times over about a week, growing bigger each time.

This stage is a major target for control efforts, since larvae can't leave the water,

which is why removing standing water is one of the simplest ways to cut mosquito populations.

stage 3 pupa next comes the pupa

or tumbler a comma-shaped stage that's mostly inactive

and doesn't feed at all though it can tumble toward the bottom in quick bursts

if disturbed like the larva before it the pupa still depends entirely on water to survive inside it's undergoing metamorphosis,

a complete transformation of its body structure from an aquatic, worm-like larva into a flying adult insect,

much like a caterpillar transforming inside a chrysalis.

This only takes one to four days.

Then the skin splits and an adult mosquito climbs out onto the water's surface and takes flight.

Stage 4.

Adult and feeding behavior.

Adult males live only about a week, feeding solely on nectar and plant juices, making them harmless to humans.

Females can live weeks to months, and they need a blood meal to develop their eggs.

That's the critical link to disease.

When a female bites an infected person or animal, she can pick up a virus or parasite and pass it to the next person she bites.

This is exactly why scientists study feeding times and preferred hosts for each species.

Some bite at dawn and dusk, others bite at night, and knowing the pattern shapes real prevention strategies.
