1
Hello again!
2
How are you guys doing?
3
Today we're talking about Troye Sivan's house.
4
Finally.
5
I feel like it's really inevitable that I would make this video,
6
but more of you than I was expecting actually commented that I should do this,
7
so we're doing it.
8
The reason I didn't do Troye Sivan's home tour,
9
like, in my very first video,
10
is just because I felt like it was pretty obvious.
11
Like,
12
we all love it we all know we love it but
13
that doesn't mean it's not fun or valuable to talk about why we love it
14
so let's talk about why we love it and
15
if you haven't seen choice simon's architectural digest home tour first of all i'm
16
so excited for you because it's amazing and beautiful and very inspiring
17
but make sure you watch the full home tour like before this
18
or after this because every second of it is so good and I can't put the whole video in my video.
19
So yeah, let's watch.
20
Ah, hey AD, what's up?
21
It's Troye Sivan.
22
This is my house in Melbourne.
23
Please, please come inside, make yourselves at home.
24
I have been waiting for this day for my entire life, so...
25
okay before we really get into the video i just want to point out a few things
26
that i hope you'll all notice first of all this video
27
is how i found flack studio in australia they're the design team
28
that choice of on worked with and they're
29
so talented they really get it i really recommend checking out more of their projects
30
because there's just so much inspiration there and so much to learn from
31
but some of the best things
32
that they did in choice of on's house specifically are the lighting and the use of color and texture and materiality.
33
The whole project really just like sings.
34
And I think this home is a really good example of designing thoughtfully
35
and not making your decisions according to like a theme or a style or like a predetermined language in any way.
36
And I found this house and I was just like, done.
37
Okay, first things first, this is like literally the most comfortable couch in the world.
38
I feel like they, oh,
39
people are going to get mad at me for not taking off my shoes.
40
Like here in the living room,
41
you can see the use of color is so good.
42
I think a lot of people
43
that try to bring color into a space are kind of like overreacting to these like very bland, minimalist spaces.
44
And they just go like too strong and like too crazy with it.
45
And it ends up feeling really uncomfortable and not nice.
46
I say this a lot,
47
but when you're applying color to like something pretty large,
48
like a sofa or a wall or a big piece of furniture,
49
you'll be very surprised by how like saturated and strong colors become when they're used in a large application.
50
Like a small paint swatch or material sample can look very dull when it's like this big.
51
So people end up choosing like really strong colors and then
52
when it's actually in the space on a bigger scale it can just be very overwhelming.
53
So I think the use of color here is very smart,
54
very sophisticated, and just brings a very nice, warm feeling.
55
These Akari lamps are my favorite.
56
I think the goal was to have like a soup of light,
57
you know what I mean?
58
Soup of light.
59
This is the goal people, a soup of light.
60
Just finding soft light just kind of gently fills the room.
61
And we kind of followed suit with these pendants, they're vintage.
62
Every single light fixture in this home is doing exactly what a light fixture should do,
63
which is interestingly and intentionally manipulating light.
64
And it's just so lovely.
65
Like the vibe of every single space is so well thought out.
66
I really appreciate it.
67
This little moment, this is my reading nook or whatever.
68
And it's super, super comfortable.
69
Again, just like any view that you take of this home from any angle,
70
you can count like more than 10 textures and materials and it just brings so much depth to the space.
71
It's really lovely.
72
I'm going to say this a lot,
73
but I think it's my favorite part of the house.
74
It just feels really, really chill.
75
We've got this like awesome green stone.
76
The materiality in the kitchen is,
77
I think, my favorite in the house.
78
We've got, like, all this black steel,
79
and I love the way that it shows.
80
I don't even know.
81
These, like, sort of natural markings, and then just wood.
82
Heaps and heaps and heaps of wood, because I love wood.
83
Like, the diversity of materials in the kitchen,
84
from the countertop to the cabinetry to the floor, it's so lovely.
85
It's all working so well.
86
I feel like the designers at Flak Studio are really just,
87
like, champions when it comes to material palettes,
88
because they're all so good.
89
I talk a lot about like a minimalist approach to design without a minimalist aesthetic
90
and I think that's exactly what's happening here.
91
None of the ornament or interest in the kitchen is coming from like an unnecessary place.
92
Instead it's coming from like thoughtfully considered authentic materials
93
and using those materials to highlight what's happening and I think it's just really really successful.
94
Truly to me this house is exactly what modernism is and exactly what design should be.
95
One of my favorite art pieces in the whole house,
96
this is my Ramesh sculpture.
97
The artist Ramesh just is so sick and eccentric.
98
Come here I want to show you the ghost.
99
So if you look up here we've got two art pieces.
100
Here's a little ghost by this artist named Nell.
101
It's hand-blown glass and this is by an artist called Sydney Ball
102
and there's another one outside which I'm going to show you
103
Throughout his entire space you can tell that he didn't buy art with the goal of like filling his home,
104
but rather he found places in his home for the art that he collected.
105
And I think that's just really lovely and that sense of curation and collection always comes through in a design.
106
Like I talk about a lot,
107
having a connection to your art and caring about the things in your home.
108
It just brings so much soul and life and authenticity into a space
109
and it doesn't have to be done with expensive art like anyone can take this approach
110
so here we are on the landing this is one of my favorite places in the house to come
111
and look it's kind of lofty and reminds me of some places
112
that i've been to in like williamsburg his like mezzanine landing thing is obviously
113
so cool
114
and i especially love the contrast of it with the cork ceiling i think something really nice is happening there
115
and in general this house just has so much depth
116
and look at the lighting under it I love the effect that that's having where the beams meet the wall.
117
This house is just so good.
118
Jack Pearson, one of my favorite photographers.
119
I shot with him a couple of years ago and it's just so, so, so sick.
120
Oh, look at this one.
121
I got this two days ago.
122
Hotels of Pyongyang.
123
Super, super, super interesting.
124
Really similar to what I said about how you can tell he cares about his art.
125
He also cares about his books.
126
Everything in his home feels very like authentic and nothing is just there because it looks a certain way.
127
So, this is the guest bedroom.
128
Another huge Akari lamp.
129
Every single room in this house has an amazing lamp and I just appreciate it so much.
130
So these cork ceilings were original to the house.
131
It kind of makes the whole house feel kind of like a really cozy cave.
132
And we did the walls in this like Venetian plaster,
133
which is so smooth and soft.
134
And so I feel like everything just kind of like hugs you at night.
135
This Venetian plaster in the guest bedroom,
136
I think is a really good example of what I said in one of my bad design trend videos.
137
Basically, I think if you're going to do something really like impactful and significant on all the walls of a room,
138
it should be in a smaller,
139
more intimate space and not like throughout your entire house.
140
Like I think if this texture was on his walls in his living room and dining room,
141
it would be pretty overwhelming.
142
But using it in like a smaller,
143
cozier space like a bedroom,
144
I think is really nice.
145
I really do mean it this time.
146
I think this is my favorite room in the house.
147
It's my sister's bathroom.
148
Just like the colors and everything.
149
It kills me.
150
It really does.
151
Like Flak Studio, who I worked with,
152
did the most unbelievable job.
153
Again, the materials and color and texture and lighting,
154
it's like so harmonious yet so interesting.
155
I also really love that throughout the house,
156
a lot of the millwork and like cabinetry details have like kind of interesting handle pulls.
157
Like also the fridge in the kitchen had a pretty cool handle.
158
And here this cabinet in the bathroom has this really like fun, chunky handle detail.
159
I think it's very cool.
160
So this is my bedroom,
161
this is my little sanctuary.
162
It's really, really quiet.
163
This opens up to the park and all of these windows open up.
164
And then when it's like a really pretty day,
165
I don't know, I just feel like I'm outside.
166
This bedroom is like actually a dream bedroom.
167
The like angled walls from the roof line and the beams and the windows that open up,
168
like the architecture of the space is so nice.
169
And I think they used it really well.
170
I really love an interior design when the architecture of a building is really felt in a space.
171
And when that happens, when you're occupying like an upper level or like an attic space,
172
I just love it so much.
173
I think it's really lovely.
174
I think it really relates you to the building that you're in.
175
And I just think it's really nice to use it as a feature in an interior.
176
So I really love that they left these beams exposed.
177
Even though they're painted the same as the walls,
178
I think that it's having a really big impact on the coziness of this bedroom.
179
These lamps are one of my favorite things in the house
180
and we did these amazing like burgundy carpets
181
and at night they light up and there's kind of this like red glow in my room.
182
It's like a really nice warm hug.
183
I'm obsessed with the carpet.
184
I'm obsessed with the lamp on the floor and the way it lights the carpet.
185
In general this room is just so good
186
and see how his tv in the corner is like standing on its own and not on a piece of furniture.
187
I recommended that for people that feel like they need their TV to be in a corner.
188
It's just really nice when it can like be its own object
189
and styling it with the lamp like that is very cool in my opinion.
190
And beyond the color, the use of texture is so interesting.
191
Like the very furry shaggy chair and also notice the stone door frame around the bathroom door.
192
That's so nice and unexpected.
193
I think this room is just fantastic.
194
This is my bathroom!
195
This is my bath!
196
This is where I spend most of my time in this house.
197
Sometimes I put my laptop up here, watch Netflix.
198
Yeah, it's really really peaceful.
199
The daylight coming through the skylight into the bathtub is so pretty it makes me want to cry.
200
It's such a lovely bathroom.
201
And again, this bathroom is a really good example of designing around function,
202
but using interesting, authentic materials and textures to highlight certain moments.
203
Actual favorite part of the house.
204
I think this is the reason why I fell in love with it in the first place.
205
You can fold away these doors and then there's this courtyard that's just like actual heaven to me.
206
Again, you can see like the LA California influence,
207
but then we've also got like a lot of Japanese stuff.
208
This is called the swamp cypress.
209
There's little fishies in here somewhere.
210
I don't know if you can see them.
211
And then we've got like native Australian,
212
like doesn't get much more Australian than this or like the big eucalyptus tree.
213
It's just like paradise for me.
214
I spend a lot of time out here.
215
Troye Sivan's taste is just so good, even in plants.
216
I really love like unique plants that are interesting to look at and this garden is like full of them.
217
It feels very sculptural and I just love that.
218
I also love how it's like walled in and feels very private.
219
Outdoor toilet situation.
220
So this used to be a wine cellar and now it's this.
221
You know when you go to a restaurant and people like oh have you been to the toilet?
222
You have to go to the toilet.
223
Just kind of lent into the fantasy and lent into like a little bit of surrealism.
224
The walls are all curved so it's kind of like a cave.
225
I think the color is called oxblood.
226
And I love this like bathroom moment
227
that they created with this really strong paint color again in a small space i think it works really well
228
and they really leaned into the fact that there's no natural light in here
229
and they just chose all of the right materials
230
and lighting to make it like a very cool cave vibe it's just
231
so nice they didn't get anything wrong in this house basically
232
the history of this house was in 1874 this was a handball court
233
and then it was turned into a brick factory throughout all of the multiple renovations
234
that this place has been through one thing remained if you look really close you can see
235
Two handsome men playing handball in a court
236
and then there's this like weird sort of spear thing on the side and then you walk over here and
237
The same buddy spear they wait till the end of this video to talk about the history of the house
238
which i think is really interesting i love having a little moment to like respect the lifespan of a building
239
and all of the different chapters that his house has seen
240
in general i think flak studio just did such a good
241
job with this house this project is such a good place to look for inspiration
242
when it comes to thoughtful use of color and texture
243
and materiality and like i said at the beginning you can just really tell
244
that every single piece was chosen thoughtfully and not because it was just giving a certain look.
245
I just feel so inspired by this house and I think there's
246
so many lessons to learn from it
247
and I think it makes a lot of sense
248
that this is almost everybody's favorite Architectural Digest tour
249
because it's just really good design
250
and I think it's a really good example of what I try to communicate in all of my videos.
251
So yeah, thank you for watching,
252
make sure you like and comment and subscribe if you haven't
253
because there are many more home tour reviews to come and a lot more inspiration okay i'll see you next week
