Today we're talking about Troye Sivan's house.

Finally.

I feel like it's really inevitable that I would make this video,

but more of you than I was expecting actually commented that I should do this,

so we're doing it.

The reason I didn't do Troye Sivan's home tour,

like, in my very first video,

is just because I felt like it was pretty obvious.

Like,

we all love it we all know we love it but

that doesn't mean it's not fun or valuable to talk about why we love it

so let's talk about why we love it and

if you haven't seen choice simon's architectural digest home tour first of all i'm

so excited for you because it's amazing and beautiful and very inspiring

but make sure you watch the full home tour like before this

or after this because every second of it is so good and I can't put the whole video in my video.

So yeah, let's watch.

It's Troye Sivan.

This is my house in Melbourne.

Please, please come inside, make yourselves at home.

I have been waiting for this day for my entire life, so...

okay before we really get into the video i just want to point out a few things

that i hope you'll all notice first of all this video

is how i found flack studio in australia they're the design team

that choice of on worked with and they're

so talented they really get it i really recommend checking out more of their projects

because there's just so much inspiration there and so much to learn from

but some of the best things

that they did in choice of on's house specifically are the lighting and the use of color and texture and materiality.

The whole project really just like sings.

And I think this home is a really good example of designing thoughtfully

and not making your decisions according to like a theme or a style or like a predetermined language in any way.

And I found this house and I was just like, done.

Okay, first things first, this is like literally the most comfortable couch in the world.

I feel like they, oh,

people are going to get mad at me for not taking off my shoes.

Like here in the living room,

you can see the use of color is so good.

I think a lot of people

that try to bring color into a space are kind of like overreacting to these like very bland, minimalist spaces.

And they just go like too strong and like too crazy with it.

And it ends up feeling really uncomfortable and not nice.

I say this a lot,

but when you're applying color to like something pretty large,

like a sofa or a wall or a big piece of furniture,

you'll be very surprised by how like saturated and strong colors become when they're used in a large application.

Like a small paint swatch or material sample can look very dull when it's like this big.

So people end up choosing like really strong colors and then

when it's actually in the space on a bigger scale it can just be very overwhelming.

So I think the use of color here is very smart,

very sophisticated, and just brings a very nice, warm feeling.

These Akari lamps are my favorite.

I think the goal was to have like a soup of light,

you know what I mean?

Soup of light.

This is the goal people, a soup of light.

Just finding soft light just kind of gently fills the room.

And we kind of followed suit with these pendants, they're vintage.

Every single light fixture in this home is doing exactly what a light fixture should do,

which is interestingly and intentionally manipulating light.

And it's just so lovely.

Like the vibe of every single space is so well thought out.

I really appreciate it.

This little moment, this is my reading nook or whatever.

And it's super, super comfortable.

Again, just like any view that you take of this home from any angle,

you can count like more than 10 textures and materials and it just brings so much depth to the space.

It's really lovely.

I'm going to say this a lot,

but I think it's my favorite part of the house.

It just feels really, really chill.

We've got this like awesome green stone.

The materiality in the kitchen is,

I think, my favorite in the house.

We've got, like, all this black steel,

and I love the way that it shows.

I don't even know.

These, like, sort of natural markings, and then just wood.

Heaps and heaps and heaps of wood, because I love wood.

Like, the diversity of materials in the kitchen,

from the countertop to the cabinetry to the floor, it's so lovely.

It's all working so well.

I feel like the designers at Flak Studio are really just,

like, champions when it comes to material palettes,

because they're all so good.

I talk a lot about like a minimalist approach to design without a minimalist aesthetic

and I think that's exactly what's happening here.

None of the ornament or interest in the kitchen is coming from like an unnecessary place.

Instead it's coming from like thoughtfully considered authentic materials

and using those materials to highlight what's happening and I think it's just really really successful.

Truly to me this house is exactly what modernism is and exactly what design should be.

One of my favorite art pieces in the whole house,

this is my Ramesh sculpture.

The artist Ramesh just is so sick and eccentric.

Come here I want to show you the ghost.

So if you look up here we've got two art pieces.

Here's a little ghost by this artist named Nell.

It's hand-blown glass and this is by an artist called Sydney Ball

and there's another one outside which I'm going to show you

Throughout his entire space you can tell that he didn't buy art with the goal of like filling his home,

but rather he found places in his home for the art that he collected.

And I think that's just really lovely and that sense of curation and collection always comes through in a design.

Like I talk about a lot,

having a connection to your art and caring about the things in your home.

It just brings so much soul and life and authenticity into a space

and it doesn't have to be done with expensive art like anyone can take this approach

so here we are on the landing this is one of my favorite places in the house to come

and look it's kind of lofty and reminds me of some places

that i've been to in like williamsburg his like mezzanine landing thing is obviously

so cool

and i especially love the contrast of it with the cork ceiling i think something really nice is happening there

and in general this house just has so much depth

and look at the lighting under it I love the effect that that's having where the beams meet the wall.

So, this is the guest bedroom.

Every single room in this house has an amazing lamp and I just appreciate it so much.

So these cork ceilings were original to the house.

It kind of makes the whole house feel kind of like a really cozy cave.

And we did the walls in this like Venetian plaster,

which is so smooth and soft.

And so I feel like everything just kind of like hugs you at night.

I think is a really good example of what I said in one of my bad design trend videos.

Basically, I think if you're going to do something really like impactful and significant on all the walls of a room,

it should be in a smaller,

more intimate space and not like throughout your entire house.

Like I think if this texture was on his walls in his living room and dining room,

it would be pretty overwhelming.

But using it in like a smaller,

cozier space like a bedroom,

a lot of the millwork and like cabinetry details have like kind of interesting handle pulls.

Like also the fridge in the kitchen had a pretty cool handle.

And here this cabinet in the bathroom has this really like fun, chunky handle detail.

It's really, really quiet.

This opens up to the park and all of these windows open up.

And then when it's like a really pretty day,

I don't know, I just feel like I'm outside.

This bedroom is like actually a dream bedroom.

The like angled walls from the roof line and the beams and the windows that open up,

like the architecture of the space is so nice.

And I think they used it really well.

I really love an interior design when the architecture of a building is really felt in a space.

And when that happens, when you're occupying like an upper level or like an attic space,

So I really love that they left these beams exposed.

Even though they're painted the same as the walls,

I think that it's having a really big impact on the coziness of this bedroom.

and we did these amazing like burgundy carpets

and at night they light up and there's kind of this like red glow in my room.

and see how his tv in the corner is like standing on its own and not on a piece of furniture.

And beyond the color, the use of texture is so interesting.

And again, this bathroom is a really good example of designing around function,

but using interesting, authentic materials and textures to highlight certain moments.

I think this is the reason why I fell in love with it in the first place.

You can fold away these doors and then there's this courtyard that's just like actual heaven to me.

but then we've also got like a lot of Japanese stuff.

I really love like unique plants that are interesting to look at and this garden is like full of them.

It feels very sculptural and I just love that.

I also love how it's like walled in and feels very private.

So this used to be a wine cellar and now it's this.

You know when you go to a restaurant and people like oh have you been to the toilet?

Just kind of lent into the fantasy and lent into like a little bit of surrealism.

The walls are all curved so it's kind of like a cave.

that they created with this really strong paint color again in a small space i think it works really well

and they really leaned into the fact that there's no natural light in here

and they just chose all of the right materials

the history of this house was in 1874 this was a handball court

and then it was turned into a brick factory throughout all of the multiple renovations

that this place has been through one thing remained if you look really close you can see

which i think is really interesting i love having a little moment to like respect the lifespan of a building

in general i think flak studio just did such a good

job with this house this project is such a good place to look for inspiration

when it comes to thoughtful use of color and texture

and materiality and like i said at the beginning you can just really tell

that every single piece was chosen thoughtfully and not because it was just giving a certain look.

I just feel so inspired by this house and I think there's

so many lessons to learn from it
