1
i have to speak about someone that we sadly lost 40 plus years ago
2
but back in the news uh john lennon um
3
now you are very early age you had the fortune of of meeting him
4
and working with him didn't you so how did all
5
that come about well that came about because the band i was playing with
6
which was a nine -piece band we had four horn players
7
it was a really good band i was 16 years old
8
and uh jimmy ivine was our producer brought us into the record plant
9
and they gave us a rehearsal room all the time whenever we wanted
10
so we used to hang out at the record plant in new york city
11
and one night jimmy ivine called us up we were upstairs rehearsing
12
and he said can you come down do hand claps we're sure
13
so we go down the studio and there's jimmy with john lennon and we walk in going, Oh my God, you know, John, John, let it.
14
So we did, uh, we went into the room and put headphones on.
15
Now he's talking to you, you know, and it's just like, what a trip.
16
And I'm thinking, I gotta have, I gotta go to school the next day after this.
17
And we did hand claps on the song, whatever gets you through the night.
18
And that came, that, that went well.
19
And then, uh, I guess John found out we rehearsed upstairs
20
and we were cool we weren't fan boys
21
so he felt safe around us so he used to come up
22
and watch us rehearse and we had a pool table up there
23
and uh we used to play pool with him
24
and then he asked us to do uh uh three videos with him
25
and uh he really liked the band the band was good i heard
26
that he was thinking of using us as his next band that's how good the band was
27
and we did three videos with him that have been released on his dvds
28
and we did um he produced the owner of the record plants why he was a singer
29
and she wasn't known but he produced eight songs
30
and we were the band so we worked with him in as a producer
31
and then he asked us to do a gig he had at the new york kilton
32
and it was a black tie affair and it was televised around the world
33
and we were the band he asked us to do it
34
and we played three songs with him imagine stand by me
35
and slipping and sliding
36
and then a few years back a few years ago probably six years ago seven years ago i found out
37
that was his last live appearance it was in a guitar aficionado magazine
38
and there's a big picture of uh john and
39
and the band i was right next to john it mentions me
40
because i played with sabbath and dio
41
and i went on to do big bigger things and mentions me
42
and john and then it says this is his last live appearance
43
and i'm like what me at 16 years old played his last live appearance oh my god
44
so it was a trip you know pretty trip
45
but he liked us because we didn't do the fanboy thing
46
and he felt he can come up
47
and watch us rehearse we smoked i smoked a couple joints with him
48
and and uh he felt safe with us you know
49
and obviously he's like one of the biggest rock stars of all time
50
i mean what was he like just to hang around with him what was he like as a person at
51
that time yeah well he was really uh you know it's hard to remember so long ago
52
This was 1975, but he was very nice, you know, very nice.
53
Matter of fact, I'm sitting there, we're smoking a joint and I'm talking, we're talking about Italian food.
54
And I said, well, my family's Italian.
55
My grandmother's from Italy.
56
My mom makes the best lasagna in the world.
57
And then we had a conversation about it and I said, I'll have her make you some.
58
So a couple of days later, I bring in a pan of lasagna to the studio.
59
i see john i give it to john he was surprised he was happy okay
60
so he took it took it home
61
and about a month later my brother's playing with rod stewart at madison square garden for a bunch of nights
62
and there's a big party
63
so my parents went to the party
64
i was on the road with derringer at the time this was a little later on i guess
65
and uh my mom sees john lennon and my father
66
She goes, let's go say hi.
67
She's from Brooklyn.
68
She said, it doesn't matter, right?
69
So Colin brings her over, introduces John to my mother and says, this is my mom and this is Vinny's mom.
70
She made you lasagna.
71
Oh, and they chatted for a while.
72
And at the end of the conversation, my mom asked John Lennon, did you bring the pan?
73
He had the lasagna pan.
74
like she thought hey he might bring the lasagna pan back who knows
75
you know he didn't know she was coming that's so
76
that was a funny story
77
but uh it was great hanging out together you know i bet it was
78
and how was that going back to school then
79
because you said you were at school
80
when you were hanging out with him i mean well
81
that sounds crazy that was hard you know i'd sit in school going this is
82
so black and white last night i was in a world of color
83
and what am i doing here you know
84
and i i would be tapping on the desk
85
you know the teacher's trying to teach you go uh wait who's
86
that drumming vincent stop that drumming so i would stand up
87
and go excuse me did anyone else in this classroom play with one of the beatles last night
88
And I got up and I left.
89
I quit high school.
90
That's what they call mic drop these days.
91
That is definitely one of their moments.
92
I knew I was going to play.
93
My brother was successful.
94
My parents knew he was successful, that there was a living in it.
95
So I knew what I was going to do.
96
Luckily, it happened for me.
97
Later on, I did get the equivalency high school diploma.
98
know i did they do that and uh
99
but uh yeah i was really trippy going to school after being hanging out with john lennon i mean jesus
