Shadowing Practice: Climate Change: How does it really work? | ClimateScience #1 - Learn English Speaking with Video

1
Climate change, or global warming, is something we hear about all the time.
2
But what exactly is warming our planet?
3
And how will it impact our Earth and the life that calls it home?
4
Earth has a layer of gases around it which we call our atmosphere.
5
This atmosphere acts like a barrier of sorts.
6
It protects us from harmful radiation coming from the sun.
7
The atmosphere also helps keep the earth warm enough to support life.
8
This happens because some of the gases in our atmosphere, like carbon dioxide and methane, are able to trap heat from the sun.
9
These are called greenhouse gases.
10
A greenhouse works by trapping the light from the sun inside of a glass cage.
11
This can provide warm temperatures for the plants inside during the cold winter months.
12
Carbon dioxide and methane are called greenhouse gases
13
because they too are able to trap the sun's heat and make the Earth warm, just like a greenhouse would.
14
Without any greenhouse gases, our Earth would be cold and deserted just like Mars.
15
But too much of it could make our planet hot and lifeless, like Venus.
16
We need just the right amount to have a climate like ours on Earth.
17
As a matter of fact, CO2, the greenhouse gas responsible for about 80 % of global temperature rise,
18
only makes up around 0 .03 % of our atmosphere.
19
So even small changes can have big consequences.
20
Unfortunately, many of our factories, cars, power plants, and the way we make our food emit plenty of greenhouse gases
21
when they burn fossil fuels like coal and oil.
22
This adds more CO2 to the atmosphere, thereby making our planet hotter.
23
This is really, really important, because recently, the Earth has been warming fast.
24
You may say that the Earth has warmed up before, and you would be correct.
25
We actually used to be in an ice age not too long ago.
26
The difference this time, however, is the rate at which the Earth is warming.
27
The planet is warming much, much faster than what it's used to.
28
Global air temperatures have gone up by about 1 degree since the Industrial Revolution.
29
Two -thirds of this rise in temperature has happened since 1975.
30
5. In the past, it's taken the planet about 5 ,000 years to warm 5 degrees.
31
We're actually expected to go 20 times faster than that this century.
32
Animals and plants that would usually have a chance to evolve adaptations
33
or migrate to deal with the changing climate over thousands of years now have almost no time and therefore face extinction.
34
As well as this, rising temperatures result in higher sea levels as hotter water expands and melting ice flows into the seas.
35
A warmer climate will also lead to more extreme weather events such as intense hurricanes and longer droughts.
36
Climate change is a global problem that will need everyone's help to fix.

Why This Video Is Perfect for Language Learning

This clip is a goldmine for speaking practice because it balances clear, conversational language with complex ideas. The narrator uses simple explanations of scientific concepts, making it easy to follow while exposing learners to academic vocabulary like "greenhouse gases" and "extreme weather events." The steady pace and natural intonation also make it ideal for mimicking—key for improving pronunciation and fluency.

Breaking Down Natural Speech Patterns

Let’s look at a few lines that showcase natural English flow. First: "Climate change or 'global warming' is something we hear about all the time but what exactly is warming our planet..." The casual use of "or" to clarify terms and the slight pause before "but" mirror how native speakers connect ideas. Next: "Without any greenhouse gases, our earth would be cold and deserted like mars but too much of it would make our planet hot and lifeless like Venus." The parallel structure ("cold and deserted like Mars" vs. "hot and lifeless like Venus") creates rhythm, a common technique in explanatory speech. Finally: "We’re expected to go 20 times faster than that this century!" The contraction "We’re" and the emphasis on "20 times faster" show how stress conveys urgency—critical for impactful speaking.

A Simple Shadowing Technique Routine

To practice with this video, try the shadowing technique: play a 5-second clip, pause, and repeat it immediately, mimicking the tone, pace, and pronunciation. Focus on matching the narrator’s stress (e.g., "really really important") and intonation (rising at the end of questions). Record yourself, then compare it to the video. Notice differences in vowel sounds (like the short "a" in "gas") or word stress (e.g., "atmosPHERE" vs. "ATMosphere"). Do this daily for 10 minutes, and you’ll quickly improve your fluency and confidence. This routine works because it trains your brain to think and speak in real time—key for natural communication.

Whether you’re working on pronunciation practice or building speaking skills, this video offers a dynamic way to learn. By combining language learning with engaging content, you’ll stay motivated while mastering essential skills.
