1
Climate change, or global warming, is something we hear about all the time.
2
But what exactly is warming our planet?
3
And how will it impact our Earth and the life that calls it home?
4
Earth has a layer of gases around it which we call our atmosphere.
5
This atmosphere acts like a barrier of sorts.
6
It protects us from harmful radiation coming from the sun.
7
The atmosphere also helps keep the earth warm enough to support life.
8
This happens because some of the gases in our atmosphere, like carbon dioxide and methane, are able to trap heat from the sun.
9
These are called greenhouse gases.
10
A greenhouse works by trapping the light from the sun inside of a glass cage.
11
This can provide warm temperatures for the plants inside during the cold winter months.
12
Carbon dioxide and methane are called greenhouse gases
13
because they too are able to trap the sun's heat and make the Earth warm, just like a greenhouse would.
14
Without any greenhouse gases, our Earth would be cold and deserted just like Mars.
15
But too much of it could make our planet hot and lifeless, like Venus.
16
We need just the right amount to have a climate like ours on Earth.
17
As a matter of fact, CO2, the greenhouse gas responsible for about 80 % of global temperature rise,
18
only makes up around 0 .03 % of our atmosphere.
19
So even small changes can have big consequences.
20
Unfortunately, many of our factories, cars, power plants, and the way we make our food emit plenty of greenhouse gases
21
when they burn fossil fuels like coal and oil.
22
This adds more CO2 to the atmosphere, thereby making our planet hotter.
23
This is really, really important, because recently, the Earth has been warming fast.
24
You may say that the Earth has warmed up before, and you would be correct.
25
We actually used to be in an ice age not too long ago.
26
The difference this time, however, is the rate at which the Earth is warming.
27
The planet is warming much, much faster than what it's used to.
28
Global air temperatures have gone up by about 1 degree since the Industrial Revolution.
29
Two -thirds of this rise in temperature has happened since 1975.
30
5. In the past, it's taken the planet about 5 ,000 years to warm 5 degrees.
31
We're actually expected to go 20 times faster than that this century.
32
Animals and plants that would usually have a chance to evolve adaptations
33
or migrate to deal with the changing climate over thousands of years now have almost no time and therefore face extinction.
34
As well as this, rising temperatures result in higher sea levels as hotter water expands and melting ice flows into the seas.
35
A warmer climate will also lead to more extreme weather events such as intense hurricanes and longer droughts.
36
Climate change is a global problem that will need everyone's help to fix.

Understanding Climate Change: A Real-World Context for Language Learning

Imagine watching a video that explains how our planet’s climate works—you’re not just learning science, but also practicing English! The video breaks down complex ideas like greenhouse gases and global warming into simple, conversational language, making it perfect for speaking practice and pronunciation practice. Whether you’re explaining climate change to a friend or writing about it, the phrases and structure here will help you communicate clearly.

Useful Chunks & Collocations to Memorize

  • "trap heat from the sun" – A key phrase to describe how greenhouse gases work. Notice the verb "trap" and preposition "from" working together.
  • "emit plenty of greenhouse gases" – Common collocation for talking about pollution sources like factories or cars. "Emit" is a more formal alternative to "release."
  • "rate at which the earth is warming" – Useful for comparing changes over time. The structure "rate at which [something happens]" is great for precise descriptions.
  • "extreme weather events" – A phrase you’ll hear often in news about climate change. It includes hurricanes, droughts, and other severe conditions.
  • "make human life sustainable" – Important for discussing solutions. "Sustainable" means meeting current needs without harming the future.

Your Shadowing Challenge: Practice Like a Pro

Ready to try the shadowing technique? Here’s how: Pick a 30-second clip from the video (try the part about greenhouse gases). Play the clip, then pause and repeat it immediately, copying the tone, speed, and pronunciation. Focus on matching the stress in words like "atmosphere" (a-TMOS-phere) and "methane" (METH-ane). Do this 5 times, then record yourself. Compare your recording to the video—did you catch the rhythm? Shadowing helps you speak more naturally and builds confidence in real-time communication. Give it a try, and you’ll notice progress in your language learning journey!
