In this video we're going to talk about fractions
2
and I want you to understand the concept of a fraction using visual illustrations.
3
So let's say if we have a circle.
4
Let me draw a better looking circle.
5
And let's split the circle into two equal parts.
6
Now I'm going to shade only one portion of those two parts.
7
So what fraction of the circle is shaded?
8
So there's two parts of the circle and only one of those two parts is shaded.
9
So we could say that one half of the circle is shaded.
10
Now let me give you another example.
11
Let's say if I have a circle and I split it into four equal parts.
12
And I'm going to shade this part of the circle.
13
So what fraction of the circle is shaded?
14
So there's four equal parts of the circle, and three of those four parts were shaded.
15
So three-fourths of the circle is shaded.
16
Now let me give you another illustration.
17
So let's say we have a circle again.
18
And this time, I'm going to divide the circle into eight equal parts.
19
So what fraction of the circle is shaded?
20
So we know that there's eight parts, the circle was divided into eight equal parts, and only three of those eight parts were shaded.
21
So three-eighths of the circle is shaded.
22
And so hopefully these visual illustrations help you to understand a concept of a fraction, which is basically a portion out of a whole.
23
Now here's another example for you.
24
So let's say we have a rectangle.
25
And it's broken up into seven congruent parts.
26
Now granted, my drawing is not perfect, but we'll make it work.
27
And let's say three of those parts is shaded.
28
What fraction of the rectangle is shaded and what fraction is not shaded?
29
So there's seven equal parts, and three of those seven parts are shaded
30
so we could say three-sevenths of the rectangle is shaded now
31
out of this total seven parts four of those seven parts is not shaded
32
so four-sevenths of the rectangle remains unshaded or not shaded Now,
33
let's look at another example.
34
So let's say we have a square.
35
And we're going to break up the square into a total of eight parts.
36
What fraction of the square is not shaded?
37
And what fraction is shaded?
38
So out of the eight parts, five of those parts is shaded.
39
So we can say that five eighths of the rectangle, or rather, of the square is shaded.
40
Now what fraction is not shaded?
41
out of the total eight parts, three parts is not shaded.
42
So hopefully these visual illustrations help you to solidify the concept of a fraction.
43
So here's a practice problem for you.
44
Draw a circle and shade only two-fifths of the circle.
45
So feel free to pause the video.
46
So here's a circle, and we'll need to break it up into five equal parts.
47
So that's going to be one, we'll say two, three, four, and five.
48
So once you split it into five parts, all you need to do is shade two of those five parts.
49
And so in this case, two-fifths of the circle has been shaded.
50
And so that's basically it for this video.
51
So now you understand fractions with circles and squares and rectangles.
52
So that's basically it for this video.
53
and if you need help with adding or subtracting fractions
54
or even multiplying
55
and dividing fractions I'm going to post a few links in the description section of this video
56
so you can take a look at that when you get a chance.
57
Thanks for watching.

Why This Video Is Perfect for English Speaking Practice

This video on fractions is a hidden gem for english speaking practice—and not just because it teaches math! The clear, slow pace of the narrator’s speech makes it ideal for shadow speech (repeating aloud as you listen), a technique that boosts pronunciation and fluency. The simple, conversational language (“Let me draw a better looking circle,” “So what fraction of the circle is shaded?”) mirrors everyday English, making it easy to mimic. Plus, the visual descriptions (“split into eight equal parts,” “three of those eight parts were shaded”) help you connect words to images, strengthening your ability to describe concepts clearly—great for IELTS speaking practice too!

Breaking Down Natural English Phrases

Let’s look at why the narrator’s lines sound so natural. First, “So let's say if we have a circle” uses a casual “let’s say if” to introduce examples—this is how native speakers often frame ideas in explanations. Next, “Now I'm going to shade only one portion of those two parts” uses “only” to emphasize specificity, a common way to clarify details. Then, “So three-fourths of the circle is shaded” shows how fractions are spoken aloud (“three-fourths” vs. “3/4”), a key skill for clear communication. Finally, “feel free to pause the video” is a friendly, encouraging phrase that’s useful in any conversational setting. These phrases are simple but powerful—mastering them will make your speech sound more natural.

A Simple Shadow Speech Routine for This Video

Ready to practice? Try this shadowspeaks loop: 1) Watch a 10-second clip of the video, focusing on the narrator’s tone and rhythm. 2) Pause, then repeat the clip aloud, matching the speed and stress (e.g., stress “one half” in “one half of the circle”). 3) Record yourself and compare—did you catch the “so” at the start of sentences? 4) Do this for 5 minutes daily, focusing on 2-3 phrases. Over time, you’ll notice your pronunciation and fluency improve. This routine works because it trains your mouth to form English sounds and your brain to think in real-time—perfect for learn english with youtube style practice. Remember, progress takes time, so be kind to yourself and celebrate small wins!
