Master IELTS Listening: Practice Numbers Like a Pro

About This Lesson

This video lesson focuses on a critical IELTS listening skill: accurately writing down numbers. You’ll practice 8 common number types, including telephone numbers, large quantities, and percentages—all of which frequently appear in the IELTS exam. By the end, you’ll test your ability to capture details like "2,500," "090 472 9158," and "6.5%" under real exam-like conditions, ensuring you’re ready for similar questions in all test parts.

Key Vocabulary & Phrases

  • Telephone number: A sequence of digits for contact (e.g., "090 472 9158")
  • Percentage: A proportion out of 100 (e.g., "42%")
  • Large quantity: Numbers over 1,000 (e.g., "157,000")
  • Accurate: Correct in every detail (critical for IELTS scoring)
  • Double zero: Two consecutive zeros (e.g., "three four double zero")

Practice Tips for Success

To boost your english speaking practice and listening skills, use the shadowing technique: play a number, pause, and repeat it aloud immediately, mimicking the speaker’s tone and speed. This "shadow speech" helps train your ear to catch fast-paced digits and improves pronunciation. For example, when the speaker says "one million five hundred thousand," repeat it to focus on rhythm and stress. The video’s clear, steady tone is perfect for beginners—start at 0.75x speed if needed, then gradually match the original pace. Remember: shadow speak isn’t just about repetition; it’s about aligning your speech with the speaker’s flow to build fluency. After writing down numbers, compare your answers and shadow the correct versions to fix mistakes. Consistent practice with shadowspeaks will make you more confident in both listening and speaking, a win for IELTS and real-world communication.

Ready to level up? Revisit the video, apply these tips, and check your progress—accuracy is key, and every correct number brings you closer to IELTS success.
