12
Okay, let's get into today's stories.
13
In the summer of 2013, a young woman named Katie
14
and her father decided to go camping at one of their favorite campgrounds in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
15
Katie loved going camping with her father because he was this totally accomplished outdoorsman
16
and he used to be a wilderness guide for much of his life and
17
so she just always felt like she was in great hands whenever she was out in the wild with him
18
and she had kind of become a fairly accomplished outdoors woman herself.
19
When they arrived at the campground the parking lot was packed with cars
20
and they're like shoot I wish we'd called ahead a couple weeks ago
21
and reserved a site because they're probably not even available now but they went to the front desk and they were like, you're in luck.
22
We have one available, but it's the one that's way over there.
23
It was this one campsite that was kind of isolated from the rest of the campground.
24
It was far away from the bathhouse.
25
It was far away from where you go swimming.
26
And it was far away from the parking lot.
27
It was just like really inconvenient.
28
And whenever they came camping here, it was like the one site they didn't want to use.
29
But beggars can't be choosers.
30
They were happy to even have a site.
31
And so they drove all the way down, down this little road into this very isolated campsite kind of in the middle of this forest.
32
Once they got there they began setting up their respective tents
33
because they were not going to be staying in the same tent.
34
They each had these very small backpacking tents which were
35
so small that you could either zip it up all the way
36
and stay warmer and more protected but you had to sleep in a ball
37
because your legs would not fit otherwise
38
or you could unzip the front of your tent and
39
when you lay down you could extend your legs fully but your legs are protruding outside of your tent.
40
So you could only do that in warmer weather and
41
if you were comfortable having your legs poking out into the wilderness after they set up their tents
42
and they get their cooler set up
43
and they have all their stuff kind of the way
44
they want it they go out hiking for the rest of the day
45
when they come back they're totally exhausted they fall asleep
46
and nothing of note occurs over
47
that first night the next day they get up
48
they go back out they go hiking all day all over again
49
and they come back that night and they are totally exhausted again
50
and they get into their tents and they go to bed and this night something of note would happen.
51
At about 3 a .m.
52
Katie wakes up and she hears footsteps walking towards the campsite from a little ways off.
53
They're in the woods somewhere and she's thinking okay it's got to be my father
54
because he's diabetic and every night he gets up to go to the bathroom maybe three four times
55
and he probably was just walking to the bathhouse and now he's walking back.
56
But she realizes the bathhouse is over here not over here.
57
So what is he doing walking towards the campsite from this side?
58
The footsteps come out of the tree line.
59
They come into the clearing that is their campsite
60
and they stop about two three meters outside of katie's tent
61
now there were no windows on katie's backpack tent there was just little vents at the front
62
and the back that kind of pointed down and
63
so she couldn't see out anyways and there was no illumination out
64
so you can't even pick up a silhouette it's just total darkness out
65
there she can't see who's out there she can only hear them
66
but she's thinking okay maybe my dad got lost coming back from the bathhouse
67
because he didn't have a flashlight and he walked too far that's possible
68
or you know he could have decided to relieve himself just
69
in the tree line even though he's not known to do
70
that he's a guy that goes to the bathhouse and
71
so she's running through these scenarios that are convincing her
72
that oh that's just my dad but what she really wants to hear is
73
that person walk away from her tent and get into her father's tent
74
because that will confirm in her mind that that was her father
75
and so she's sitting here waiting for that confirmation
76
and she hears the footsteps again
77
but instead of walking around her tent to her father's tent
78
this person walks right up against her tent very quickly
79
and they clearly begin leaning over her little tiny tent
80
because she can hear them breathing right above her and this is
81
when she realizes that's not my dad and as she's having this terrible revelation
82
that some stranger is outside her tent right now she has an even worse revelation it was a warm night
83
that night so she was sleeping with her tent unzipped
84
and her legs poking out the end
85
she musters the courage to begin slowly retracting her legs back inside of her tent
86
but before she's able to do that this person stands up turns
87
and starts walking towards the base of her tent where her legs are she's completely frozen
88
and terrified about what's about to happen
89
but this person doesn't stop at her feet they keep moving
90
and in fact start circling her tent but
91
because they were making a lot of noise
92
and walking around her it allowed her to pull her legs back into her tent without
93
you know this person hearing her and
94
so she had the illusion of safety being inside of her tent
95
but her tent is still unzipped so she's waiting for this person to come around
96
and crouch down and look inside of her tent because it's open
97
and so she's just looking down there hoping that doesn't happen
98
but unfortunately right at this moment the person walked to the base of her tent
99
and came to a stop right outside where the opening to the tent is and
100
so she's sitting there thinking please don't come in here please don't come in here please don't come in here
101
and even though her feet are pulled up into her tent she suddenly feels something pinch her foot
102
and she knows it's a hand something has grabbed my foot
103
and she stifles a scream and she starts shaking uncontrollably
104
because her instincts are telling her don't let this person know you're awake
105
and luckily as she's sitting there shaking from fear
106
and trying to be quiet as best as she can she's holding her mouth this person stands back up again
107
and goes back to the spot next to her tent
108
and leans over the tent once again
109
and she can hear them breathing right over her and
110
so for several minutes she lay
111
there shaking with this random person who pinched her foot a
112
minute ago hovering over her tent in the middle of the night
113
and she has nothing she can do
114
and she's just quiet she's hoping it's going to end soon
115
and eventually this person would turn around and walk over to their cooler
116
and their table and some other things that were out
117
and she hears some rummaging going on some things are being moved around
118
and then this person just kind of walks off into the distance but she doesn't know if they're gone.
119
She doesn't know if they're standing in the edge of the tree line waiting for her to come outside.
120
Maybe they laid a trap for her.
121
And so she just lays there silent, doesn't move.
122
And she's praying to herself, please don't let anything happen to me or my father.
123
And all night she's just laying there.
124
And then eventually she does fall asleep.
125
Probably hours go by, but she does fall asleep
126
because she wakes up again when she hears her father unzipping his tent
127
and she charges out to meet him and she can tell right away
128
that he's scared and before she can even say
129
or begin to describe what's happened to her he says were
130
you outside your tent last night at about two three in the morning
131
because i heard all sorts of commotion near our cooler i wasn't sure
132
if it was an animal i wasn't sure if it was you
133
and she starts telling him no this is what happened to me
134
and as she's describing what happened to her he looks behind her at the picnic table
135
which was next to their cooler and they had their backpacks on it basically anything
136
that didn't fit in their tents they kept near this picnic table
137
and he points at it and she turns around and any item
138
that was in the cooler or in their backpacks or
139
that was just out has been stacked in a pyramid formation
140
on this table clearly the guy who was here last night did this for some reason they don't understand
141
and as they go over to look at it to see
142
if anything's been taken they notice this track of footprints like these heavy footprints
143
that have been going around and around katie's tent.
144
So she clearly wasn't imagining it.
145
And so that instant, they packed everything up, got in their car, and they left.
146
And to this day, they can barely talk about it with each other because it's all the things that could have happened.
147
The father felt horribly guilty because he clearly heard this person, but didn't leave his tent.
148
And his daughter was clearly in danger.
149
And his daughter's thinking, the tent was open.
150
This person was crouched down, reaching into my tent, grabbing my feet like that's such a horrifying image
151
and so this has been completely traumatizing for them
152
and they just don't talk about it anymore we have a brand new show a history podcast
153
but wait it's not like a boring history show this is not like you know
154
when you were in school and you had to sit through lectures about something
155
that happened hundreds thousands of years ago it's not
156
that we're going to pull from history
157
but we're going to tell the true stories behind moments in history we're going to give you stories
158
that feel like mr ballin stories with plot twists
159
and crazy point of views it's going to be classic ball
160
and storytelling but again historical is the context here let me give you an example
161
so if you look back and try to identify the first time true crime sort of became a thing,
162
that the public was suddenly interested in a case that really had nothing to do with them just because it was entertaining,
163
that case would be about this murderer who escaped.
164
And that's kind of all that's available if you look it up.
165
Oh yeah, escaped murderer, that's when true crime became a thing.
166
But did you know that that case, the escaped murderer, was way more compelling and exciting than most people give it credit for?
167
People were interested at the time because there was this crazy transatlantic boat chase, and there was this crazy hunt for the killer,
168
and the killing itself was so grisly, and that story really doesn't get told much.
169
It's just kind of a statistic in a history book.
170
And so what this podcast does is it finds cases like
171
that and actually shows you why history is so cool and so interesting.
172
And that's just episode one.
173
So this new history podcast is called a twist of history
174
and it's live right now so go to any platform where you get your podcasts
175
and look up a twist of history or just search for ballin studios
176
and you can find it that way you know follow the show
177
and tune in each week and
178
if you really want to give us a five -star review the show is totally free new episodes every wednesday
179
in 2015 an experienced outdoorsman named bob along with his wife his young daughter
180
and their two german shepherds decided to go camping in a remote part of northern oregon
181
when they arrived at the site bob began setting up the big family tent for everyone to sleep in
182
and his daughter said hey do you mind
183
if i sleep in the spare two -man tent
184
that we always bring with us bob and his wife deliberated for a minute, but said, you know what,
185
that's fine, but you got to bring Guts.
186
That's one of the German shepherds.
187
Guts needs to sleep with you because he's going to be your protection.
188
So that night, after some s'mores around a campfire, Bob's daughter, along with Guts, retreat to their two -man tent, and Bob, his wife, and Leah,
189
the other dog, retreat to their tent.
190
That night, Bob wakes up suddenly to what sounds like footsteps outside of his tent, and he looks to his side,
191
and his wife is still in the tent with him, and so is Leah, the other dog,
192
and he listens really closely and he can hear his daughter is snoring and he can hear the sound of Guts breathing.
193
So his whole family is accounted for but he still hears these footsteps
194
and they don't sound like light little scampering sounds like you might expect from a squirrel or some small critter.
195
They sound heavy like a big creature is roaming around their campsite.
196
But Bob's dogs are really keyed in to protecting their family
197
and since Guts
198
and Leah are not up going crazy about whatever's out
199
there he figures you know what it's got to be an elk
200
or something and it's not going to do anything to us
201
so bob ultimately just goes back to sleep the next morning bob gets up
202
and everybody's just fine there's no sign of any intruders in their campsite
203
and so that only confirms to him
204
that yep it was just some harmless animal kind of walking around the wilderness
205
because we're in a pretty remote area
206
that morning they decide to go for a walk down the road
207
that was right next to their campsite and
208
so they take the dogs they start walking
209
and they make it a couple hundred feet down this road
210
when all of a sudden guts sees something or hears something
211
and takes off sprinting down the road and turns down this little access road
212
that branches off of the road they're on into the woods.
213
And Bob is thinking, oh no,
214
there's a campsite down there and this big German shepherd's going to bound up on them and something bad's going to happen.
215
And so Bob, his heart's racing, he starts taking off after Guts.
216
He goes down the access road and he finds
217
Guts stopped right outside of a campsite.
218
But there doesn't appear to be anybody in the campsite
219
but there's a tent there's a cooler there's a table
220
there's all the things you would expect at a campsite just no people
221
so bob runs up and he grabs guts
222
and he yells out reflexively hey i'm really sorry he's totally harmless
223
i don't know what he saw hey we're leaving
224
but then before he leaves he realizes on the tent
225
there's this big scratch through it like it's been cut open
226
and curiosity gets the better of him and
227
so he kind of walks up keeping an eye out in case he's wrong
228
and there are people still here but as he gets closer, he realizes there's definitely no one here.
229
This site is abandoned because he's looking around and all of their stuff has just been ransacked.
230
There's scratch marks on everything, like animals have clearly come through here.
231
And Bob, who is an avid outdoorsman, he knows how much some of their equipment costs.
232
And he's thinking, why would anyone abandon this really expensive tent or this really expensive cooler?
233
And as he's thinking about that, he turns and he sees there's a propane tank a solid metal propane tank
234
that has been completely flattened
235
but there's no tree that's fallen nearby there's no source there's no way
236
that could have been flattened so he's definitely unsettled by this
237
but ultimately he decides
238
you know what I'm going to take my family go back to my campsite
239
I'll just call the park rangers they can come down here and they can figure out what this is later that afternoon
240
Bob and his family are back at their campsite just a couple hundred feet away from this abandoned campsite
241
and at one point his wife gets up to go use the bathroom.
242
She walks about 70 feet away behind a tree
243
and she squats down and then all of a sudden she gets up
244
and starts running back towards camp and Bob sees this.
245
He turns and sees her running towards him.
246
At the same time
247
Guts gets up and starts sprinting towards her and so
248
Bob's thinking what the heck is going on?
249
Bob turns to his daughter and says stay right here with Leah
250
and Bob gets up and starts running towards his wife
251
and Guts at this point has run to his wife and passed his wife.
252
Guts has run way into the woods and as Bob is running up to his wife he's like what's going on?
253
Why are you running?
254
What's going on?
255
She says I don't know I just had this horrible feeling someone was watching me and when I turned I already saw
256
Guts running towards me and it scared me.
257
And so that's why I'm here.
258
And he's like, look, go with our daughter and with Leah.
259
I'm going to see what's going on.
260
And so his wife leaves and Bob draws his pistol.
261
And he starts walking out towards where
262
Guts has now stopped.
263
Hair raised, growling, it's yapping and barking at something in front of it.
264
And Bob's looking at it and he can't see anything.
265
And finally, after not being able to figure out what the heck is going on, he just takes
266
Guts and goes back to his campsite.
267
When Bob got back to his campsite, he wanted to leave.
268
And his wife wanted to leave.
269
His daughter didn't really know what was going on
270
but the attitude was we want to leave however it was getting late
271
and they had a bunch of stuff they would need to pack up
272
and it was going to be a real ordeal trying to do
273
that especially without any light so they decide okay we'll stay one more day
274
and we're going to leave first thing in the morning in bob's head he's thinking okay
275
i heard weird footsteps outside you know we have this abandoned campsite nearby
276
that's been thrashed up in the flattened propane tank
277
and now my wife is running away from something
278
and guts is seeing strange things in the woods like there's a lot of weird stuff going on
279
and he decides he's going to set up a tripwire all
280
the way around his campsite using a rope tied at about
281
eight inches off the ground where along the rope would be little pieces of metal
282
that would clang together so
283
if anything touched the rope it would make the metallic clinking sound then it would alert bob
284
that someone's here and
285
so bob goes over to the edge of the site where there's an obvious starting point for this tripwire
286
and he bends down to tie the rope
287
and he realizes oh my god someone's already done
288
this there is another tripwire that's already been built around the outside of our campsite.
289
It's just been cut.
290
It's been broken.
291
Like it doesn't work, but it's here.
292
Someone else who was at this campsite felt concerned enough about whatever was in the woods that they already had this idea.
293
Bob didn't even tie his perimeter.
294
He just drew his gun, told his family, get in the truck.
295
And he stayed up all night protecting his family in the truck.
296
As soon as the sun came up, they packed up and they got the heck out of there.
297
Bob is convinced that there is something out there in the woods in Northern Oregon
298
that was walking around their campsite at night that's scaring their dogs that's stalking them basically
299
and watching them from a distance
300
and probably whatever is out in the woods is the same thing
301
that caused the previous group to set up their own tripwire
302
and it's also probably the reason the other campers at the
303
other campsite were willing to abandon their nice equipment to get the heck out of there
304
because they are not messing with whatever the heck is out in those woods
305
By the summer of 2007, Chris had been working as a park ranger in southeastern Pennsylvania for a number of years,
306
and by and large, he enjoyed his occupation.
307
Some of the time, he got to do what he loved, which was hiking in the forest.
308
And some of the time, it required doing something he hated which was office work
309
that usually required staying late at night on one of those
310
late nights in august of 2007 chris's boss mike said
311
that he needed to leave the office
312
and go down the access road to this tool shed they had he needed to get some equipment
313
and bring it back up to the office for some reason
314
and he said he'd be back in about 15 minutes as soon as mike left chris decided
315
you know what i'm gonna take a break from my work
316
and i'm gonna step outside for a minute right in front of the office building was a little staff parking lot.
317
And then about 50 meters beyond that was the edge of this really dense forest where the access road that
318
Mike had just gone down to get to the tool shed basically split right through the middle
319
and went straight out past the office.
320
When Chris stepped outside to take his break, he sat down on the front steps that overlooked that parking lot and the access road.
321
And he was just kind of looking out towards the forest, not thinking about what he was looking at, just kind of mindlessly sitting there
322
when all of a sudden he just started to feel like someone's watching me
323
and instinctively he turned around to look back into the office as
324
if maybe someone was behind him but he remembered that he
325
and Mike were the only ones there that night
326
so no one's going to be behind him and
327
so he turned back around
328
and he looked out at the parking lot he didn't see any movement
329
and he looked down to the edge of the forest
330
which he could see because the moon was fairly bright
331
that night so the illumination was pretty good and there was no movement against the tree line there was no animals.
332
There was no people.
333
And Mike had not come back yet.
334
So there's nothing going on in front of him.
335
There's nothing going on behind him.
336
But he just could not shake this feeling that someone was watching him.
337
And so Chris, you know, he's not easily spooked.
338
He's used to being out in the forest in the daytime and at night.
339
He's used to being at this office.
340
A lot of times he worked at the office on his own at night.
341
So he's used to this environment.
342
And so he thought, you know what, I'm going to go look around.
343
And so he walks down the steps and he walks into the parking lot
344
and he begins looking behind some of the cars.
345
There's only a handful in the lot.
346
There's nothing in the lot.
347
And he keeps walking until he's about 10 meters away from the edge of the forest.
348
And he looks into the forest and it's too dark to see anything.
349
And there's nothing out here.
350
There's no movement.
351
There's no animals.
352
Mike is still not back yet.
353
And so even though he could not shake this sense that someone is watching him, he felt like, you know what?
354
I did my diligence and there's no one out here.
355
So it's just got to be in my head.
356
And so he decides he's going to go back inside.
357
And so he turns around and he starts walking back up towards the office
358
when all of a sudden he hears this whooshing sound come past his head.
359
And he didn't know what it was, but it sounded like someone took a stick and threw it overhand.
360
So it's spinning like a tomahawk as it passed by his head.
361
And because the sound was so loud and he was already on edge about someone potentially watching him,
362
that he actually dove as soon as he heard it
363
and fell to the ground and scrambled around and looked at the tree line from where this thing came from,
364
but there's no one there and he scrambles to his feet
365
and he's still looking around
366
and he starts backpedaling towards the office with his eyes still on the forest
367
and his attention kind of shifts from the forest to what was just thrown at me
368
and he turns around
369
and starts walking around looking for something on the ground like a stick to see
370
if something really was thrown at him but he can't find anything.
371
He didn't do an exhaustive search.
372
He didn't look under every single car but an initial scan turned up nothing
373
and then he turns back to the forest
374
and he doesn't see anything out there
375
and even though again he feels totally stressed out like something's out here
376
and I can't see it he's like am I going crazy did
377
that really happen because I can't find this big stick
378
that apparently flew past my head so is this all happening in my head
379
but regardless he's totally freaked out and he sprints back inside the office and locks every door 20 minutes later
380
Mike comes blazing up the access road he stops in front of the office
381
and runs up the stairs Chris goes over unlocks the door, and he lets him in.
382
And Chris is about to tell him about this crazy stick -throwing incident, but he can tell
383
Mike is really upset about something.
384
Probably more upset about whatever happened to him than Chris is about this stick -throwing thing.
385
And so Chris tables his story, he locks the doors behind
386
Mike, and he turns to him and he says, what's going on?
387
What's wrong with you?
388
At first, Mike doesn't say anything.
389
He just paces back and forth inside the office.
390
And then finally, Chris calms him down, and he gets him to explain what happened.
391
Mike tells him that he was down at the tool shed
392
which is about a half mile down the access road
393
and about 20 meters off the road into the forest
394
and he's at the shed it's open
395
and he's pulling out the different pieces of equipment he's going to bring back to the office
396
and he says all of a sudden all the hairs on his body stand up he's got goosebumps
397
and immediately he thinks someone's watching me and he turns around
398
and there's no one there he looks to his right
399
and his left he kind of pokes his head in the shed like is someone hiding in the shed
400
there's no one in there he walks to the back of the shed there's no one behind the shed
401
and he's just totally stumped why he's feeling this way he goes back to the front of the shed
402
and he's going over in his mind what made him feel this way
403
and he can't put his finger on it
404
but he cannot shake this feeling of someone watching him
405
and it's making him totally anxious
406
so he gets all the things
407
he needs from the shed as quick as he can he locks it up he turns
408
and he starts speed walking back out to his truck
409
when he gets about five meters away he hears footsteps running right to left behind him back where the shed is.
410
And because he was already completely on edge about someone watching him in the woods somewhere, he doesn't even turn around to see what that is.
411
He knows he needs to run to his car and get inside and put steel between him and whatever is out there.
412
Once he's inside, he locks the door, he turns on the ignition, and looks one last time in the direction of where he came from.
413
And to his horror, there is a man walking into the woods right next to the shed, turning the corner behind and disappearing into the woods.
414
His instincts were spot on.
415
He was being watched.
416
And that's when Mike hit the gas and sped back to the office.
417
Chris then tells
418
Mike about his stick throwing incident because all of a sudden
419
that seems a whole lot more real and they both agree
420
that whoever threw something at Chris is probably the same guy who was hiding near the shed with Mike.
421
Concerned this guy might come back and break into the office, they stay the night there and they watch the whole time.
422
They don't see him again and the next morning they file a report and they tell the incoming park rangers what happened.
423
But after this, there were no more reports of this strange hooded figure roaming around the forest.
424
And to this day, Chris and Mike have no idea who he is or what he wanted.
425
But they can both agree, whoever he was, he was bad news.
426
In 2006, a 14 -year -old boy named Evan lived on a farm in North Carolina.
427
This was not a typical farm with animals and crops.
428
It was a pine tree harvest tree.
429
Pine needles are a big landscaping commodity, and Evan and his family made their living bailing pine straw every year. As such,
430
their main living house on the farm was situated right in the middle of 550 acres of perfectly lined up pine trees.
431
They did not have any neighbors nearby, and there was only one road that led into the property,
432
which from the main house they could look out
433
and basically see through the rows of trees all the way to the beginning of this road, which meant any visitors were really easy to spot.
434
The main house was built on a very slight hill,
435
which meant one side of the house was effectively built on stilts to compensate for the angle.
436
And on that side of the house, on the first floor, was the living room.
437
So anyone who was in the living room looking out the window, they basically need to look at a downward angle to see the ground.
438
It would actually seem like you were on the second floor, but really you're on the first floor.
439
The window in the living room was very unique.
440
It stretched almost the entire length of the room, so almost 50 feet across.
441
And at night, you could see animals darting between the different trees because you could see down the rows.
442
And so that was pretty creepy.
443
And then just the fact that this window is so big, if you're in the living room at night you just felt really exposed.
444
So between the creepy animals running around and the level of exposure
445
and vulnerability people basically avoided the living room anytime they were in the house at night.
446
That winter Evan's cousin came to stay with him on his farm
447
and because the main house did not have any extra bedrooms Evan
448
and his cousin would have to sleep in the living room.
449
There were two couches inside of the living room one
450
that was right underneath the 50 foot long window and then another
451
which was on the other side of the room against a wall that did not have a window,
452
and so Evan would be sleeping on the couch right under the window, and his cousin would be sleeping on the other couch.
453
The first night Evan's cousin was there, they put this big sheet up over the window, but it only blocked like 75 % of the window.
454
The two flanks of the window were still exposed, but where the couches were lined up, they were kind of blocked by this sheet,
455
so it gave them a little bit of privacy.
456
After goofing around for a while, the boys finally fell asleep around midnight,
457
and then they woke up a couple hours later because they heard Evan's dogs barking way off in the pine trees.
458
Now Evan was used to his dogs running around the property and barking at other smaller animals,
459
and so just them barking was not necessarily a red flag.
460
But the barking persisted to the point where Evan's cousin got up off the couch, moved across the room to the opening of the window
461
that was not covered by the sheet at the foot of where Evan was sleeping.
462
Now Evan was still laying on the couch.
463
He was not going to get up and look out the window, so he's looking down at his cousin,
464
kind of looking at his face to get some sort of a read on what he's seeing
465
and he notices his cousin has this really perplexed look on his face like he's squinting his eyes
466
and trying to make sense of what he's looking at and
467
so Evan looks at him and says hey what's going on what do you see
468
and his cousin's like I don't know if my mind's playing tricks on me
469
or not but I'm pretty sure I see people out there.
470
At this Evan jumps off the couch and runs over
471
and butts up right next to his cousin
472
so he can look out the window too
473
and he's scanning out amongst the rows of trees
474
because there's just a mile of pine trees
475
and the first thing he notices is the moon is very bright
476
that night so there's good illumination and there was a light snow covering on the ground which really added to the illumination.
477
He's looking out maybe 100 meters
478
when he sees someone's leg extend from behind one of the pine trees as
479
if they're stepping into the space between a pine tree column
480
and he's staring at it
481
and he can't believe he's even seeing anyone walking around this area
482
because he didn't see anybody come in on the road
483
and they have no neighbors and so he's looking and then a body follows the leg.
484
A person walks from one row to the next.
485
This tall, dark figure just walks calm as can be between the two pine trees.
486
And Evan just grabs his cousin and he's like, did you just see that?
487
And his cousin's like, yeah, I saw that.
488
And so they continue to look in the direction of where this person crossed the path.
489
And after a couple of minutes, they see another leg now emerging, going the other way back towards where that first person had come from.
490
So the leg kind of extends into this gap
491
and this tall figure walks across into the next row except
492
now instead of going just directly across it looks like they're moving at an angle closer to the main house property.
493
The boys look at each other and they don't know what to do
494
so they just keep looking out the window in stunned silence
495
and as they're looking they see this person emerge again except now they're not 100 meters away they're like 20 meters away.
496
They don't know how they were able to move
497
that quickly without being seen and this time
498
when the leg comes out from behind the pine tree instead of walking across the gap
499
it stops right in the middle and it turns
500
and looks directly at the boys in the window
501
and then begins running toward them the boys practically fall over
502
trying to get away from the window evan's yelling for his father upstairs
503
and the boys instinctively just start running around the house locking every door shutting every window
504
and as they're going from door to door the anxiety is growing
505
and growing because they think if i don't get there fast enough,
506
this person who was running towards the property is going to come barging through that door.
507
And so at every door, their anxiety is through the roof, but they managed to shut everything.
508
Everything is locked right as Evan's father comes charging down the stairs.
509
He's got his gun in hand and he's like, what's going on?
510
And they say, there's someone out in our property.
511
Their dad charges out the front door.
512
The front door is not on the same wall as the living room.
513
It's on the side of the house.
514
So once he goes outside, he's going to need to turn to the right to look out in the direction
515
they were describing he bombs outside he stays on the porch he starts yelling at whoever's out there
516
that if you come over here i'm going to shoot you get the f away from here
517
and then there's silence and the boys are waiting they're looking around they're checking the window they don't see anything
518
The dad comes back inside, he shut and locks the door, and he tells Evan, keep an eye out.
519
If you see him again, you let me know.
520
Evan would reflect on this experience later on and say, you know, we really should have called 911 at that point,
521
but as a kid, I just understood that that's the way my family did business.
522
We kind of took care of ourselves.
523
And so even though there is a threat of some stranger who's running at our property, we were not gonna call the cops.
524
And so his dad effectively was telling him to be a lookout.
525
And so Evan and his cousin, they go back into the living room
526
and they kind of go up to the window they're a little bit apprehensive
527
and they're looking out and after five ten minutes of looking out the window
528
and not seeing anything they're thinking to themselves you know Evan's dad's a pretty intimidating guy
529
and he was just out there screaming
530
and yelling with a gun threatening to shoot them
531
so they probably got the message and they're probably gone and
532
so the boys got back into their couches and it took them a while but they did ultimately fall asleep.
533
The next morning
534
when the boys got up the first thing they wanted to do was go out there
535
and see if they could find footprints from this person to kind of confirm it really was a person
536
because part of them thought you know maybe we didn't see
537
that maybe that was our imaginations they don't know and
538
so they start by going out the front door
539
so not on the same wall as the living room they go out the front door they turn
540
and they walk down into the trees and they're looking around
541
and they find some footprints
542
so they're confirming to themselves okay there was someone out here wasn't us
543
this is not our footprints we found them
544
so they start following the footprints back towards the property and they realize at some point, there are two distinct sets of footprints.
545
There were two people out here, and even worse is they followed them all the way up to the house,
546
and there were two different circles of footprints
547
that stopped right underneath the living room window along the two flanks of the window where the sheet was not covering,
548
which means over the course of the night when Evan and his cousin were up at that window looking out,
549
there's a good chance that one or two strangers were tucked up against the side of the house,
550
and they would not have seen them because of the angle out of the living room window.
551
It was steep because of the stilts it was on, and so anybody that was tucked up along the side, they'd be in a blind spot.
552
And then for sure, after Evan and his cousin got back into bed and were sleeping,
553
there were two strangers who were right up against those windows, probably pulling themselves up to look inside.
554
When Evan's father found these footprints, he immediately grabbed his gun
555
and tried to follow them back into the woods to see where they came from
556
but unfortunately the snow cover wasn't complete
557
and at some point they lost the tracks and they never figured out who those two people were.
558
Evan would say following this event his cousin refused to ever come back over his house for a sleepover. In June of 2019,
559
an 18 -year -old girl named Bella wrapped up her first year in college and headed home for the summer.
560
Her family lived just outside of this small town in France
561
that was tucked up in the mountains and surrounded by this huge forest.
562
And so growing up, Bella spent a lot of her time out in this forest,
563
either by herself or with her father or other members of her family.
564
And so she knew the forest like the back of her hand.
565
Her favorite place to go in this forest was the man -made lake
566
that sat kind of at the center of this forest.
567
It wasn't huge, but it was a beautiful view.
568
It was very peaceful.
569
And so she liked going out there.
570
The way she would get to it is she would leave her house.
571
She would hop in her car.
572
She would drive a couple of miles down the road and she would pull off into the shoulder of this road.
573
And there was no signage that said this was the pull -off to get to the man -made lake.
574
This was an area that she and her family had discovered, that there was this particular trail you could take.
575
And so she would pull off at the shoulder,
576
she would get out, and she would turn away from the road and just walk directly into the trees, which butted right up against the road.
577
And very quickly, after walking into the woods, after going through some thick underbrush, she would reach this kind of clearing,
578
and she would see up ahead this little stream.
579
And off to the left side of the stream is what looked like this kind of beaten -up little footpath,
580
but actually what it was was an animal trail
581
so animals just kind of made their way around this area all the time
582
and so it kind of carved out a path and so
583
Bella would walk down to this animal path
584
and she would walk along the path
585
that kind of went parallel with the stream
586
and she would walk for maybe 15
587
or 20 minutes until this animal path veered hard to the left kind of went away from the stream at that point
588
Bella would abandon the animal path
589
and just continue walking along this stream both stepping in the stream on some rocks
590
and standing on either side when she could
591
and she would follow the stream due north just going straight
592
into the heart of this forest for about an hour walking
593
at a fairly leisurely pace until the stream connected with this east to west running river
594
and at this point bella would turn left facing west
595
and she would follow along this riverbank about 20 minutes until the river fed into the man -made lake
596
and so she would stay at this lake,
597
sitting on a rock, enjoy the view and look at the animals and listen to nature all around her.
598
And then at some point she would turn around and retrace her steps all the way back to her car.
599
For reference, one leg of this journey from car to lake or from lake to car took about two hours.
600
Part of the reason
601
Bella really enjoyed being in these woods and being at this lake was
602
because it just kind of felt like they were hers.
603
Because up until this summer in 2019, the only other people that
604
Bella had ever seen anywhere in this forest or near this lake were other members of her family.
605
So it really felt very private.
606
So in June of that year, Bella comes home from college
607
and almost immediately she wants to go out to the man -made lake because she hasn't been in months,
608
she's been in school and so she's eager to get back to some place
609
that she kind of considered to be her happy place.
610
So one morning she gets up early and by herself, she leaves her house, she hops in her car,
611
she drives the couple miles down the road, she pulls off onto that shoulder, she parks her car, she hops out,
612
she turns away from the road, she walks into the forest,
613
she finds the stream and starts walking along that animal path right to the side of the stream.
614
She walks for a few minutes until she reaches the point where the trail kind of cuts to the left,
615
and she just stays on the stream and is just continuing walking along the stream.
616
And about 30 minutes later, when she was maybe one or two miles short of the east -west running river,
617
she hears a bell somewhere off in the distance, way out in front of her, out towards the river.
618
It sounds just like a chime, a single chime.
619
And as soon as she hears it, she stops because there's never any people out here ever and
620
that bell sound came from somewhere in the forest and
621
so she stops because she's not really sure if she actually heard
622
that because it could have just been her mind playing tricks on her
623
or something and so she stops and just kind of listens for a second
624
and then she starts to hear this bell just continuously start ringing.
625
Now, the ringing was not uniform.
626
It was constant but it was kind of sporadic as
627
if you were holding a bell
628
and kind of bringing it randomly like you might see at a sports game and so she's thinking to herself,
629
you know, is there a dog that got lost somewhere up ahead
630
and it's got a bell on its collar and
631
and that's the sound i'm hearing
632
but as she's sitting there listening to this kind of sporadic bell sound she's thinking
633
that's way too loud to be some rinky dink bell on a pet's collar
634
so it's got to be something more robust did maybe somebody have a bell inside of a box
635
and that box got on the river and it's floated down river
636
and it's like crashing into rocks
637
or something i mean she's going through these very strange scenarios in her head
638
but she's not concerned about the bell she's actually pretty intrigued
639
and since the sound of this bell seemed to be coming from the direction
640
she was already traveling she decided she would just keep on walking
641
and hopefully see whatever it was that was causing this bell sound
642
and so bella just began walking along the stream again kind of listening to this bell
643
and thinking about what it was going to be and after about five minutes of her starting to walk again, the bell just stops.
644
It goes totally silent.
645
And when it does, it actually kind of startles
646
Bella because she'd been listening to it so intently.
647
And so she stops and she's listening, kind of expecting it to go off some more, but it doesn't.
648
All she hears are the sounds of nature all around her.
649
Now, Bella didn't have an explanation for what the spell was or why it stopped, but she really just wasn't that worried about it.
650
She figured there was some sort of explanation for it.
651
There had to be.
652
And so she just kind of shrugged and kept on walking
653
and put her focus back on getting to the lake about 10
654
or 15 minutes later bella was still walking along the stream she was still maybe a half mile
655
or a mile short of the east to west running river
656
when she sees up ahead on the left side of the stream as she's walking
657
there appears to be something laying on the ground
658
that looks like it could be an animal
659
or a rock she doesn't really know what it is
660
and as she gets closer she realizes it's a beaver laying on the ground
661
and this beaver is missing its head now this is a huge forest and bella would have known that you know,
662
of course, there are wild animals all over the place,
663
and so finding the body of an animal that had been attacked by another animal was not unusual.
664
That's nature.
665
But what did strike
666
Bella as odd was the cut on this beaver's neck was unbelievably neat and uniform,
667
as if its head had been very carefully removed with a very sharp knife.
668
And the beaver's head was nowhere to be found.
669
It certainly did not have the appearance of having its head removed from some predator and its teeth.
670
That would have been very rough.
671
Also, the rest of the beaver's body was intact.
672
So whatever killed this beaver was not interested in eating the beaver.
673
As Bella stood over this beaver and was just staring at it, she also noted that there was no smell.
674
Normally, when something dies, it begins to smell very quickly.
675
It's part of the decomposition process.
676
And so for there not to be a smell indicated to Bella that this beaver must have been killed fairly recently.
677
And then when Bella kind of gently prodded the body with her foot, she realized the beaver's body was still fairly limp,
678
so rigor mortis had not set in.
679
Rigor mortis is another part of the decomposition process where the body kind of stiffens up, and that happens fairly soon after death.
680
And so as Bella is realizing this beaver must have died very recently,
681
it dawns on her that most likely whoever or whatever has killed this beaver...
682
is probably somewhere nearby and bella can't help
683
but connect this dead beaver to that bell she was hearing earlier
684
which before meant nothing
685
but considering the bell was roughly coming from the same area where this beaver has now been found
686
it made her uneasy and
687
so bella found herself whipping her head around looking out into the trees seeing
688
if you know there's some person a hunter or somebody
689
that would kind of explain what was going on
690
but there was nothing and so bella felt herself starting to panic a little bit.
691
But then she stopped herself and said, calm down.
692
It's broad daylight.
693
I have been coming to these woods for years and years.
694
I've never seen another person.
695
I've never encountered some predatory animal.
696
I'm sure everything is perfectly fine.
697
I got nothing to worry about.
698
And so she stepped over the beaver and kept on walking.
699
Bella would eventually reach the east -west running river.
700
She would turn left and walk for 20 minutes alongside this river.
701
She reached the man -made lake.
702
She enjoyed the beautiful view and the scenery.
703
And then at some point, she turned around and began retracing her footsteps.
704
She walked past the Bieber on the ground all the way back to her car, and she went home.
705
A week later, Bella was sitting around her house
706
when she felt pretty bored and decided kind of abruptly that in order to cure her boredom,
707
she would go back to the place she loved so much, the man -made lake.
708
And so she told her parents where she was going, and then she left the house, hopped in her car, drove to the pull -off,
709
and parked and entered the woods at 6 p .m.
710
Sunset that night was at 9 p .m., and so Bella knew this would need to be a fairly quick turnaround
711
so she didn't get trapped in the woods in the dark.
712
And so Bella finds the animal trail.
713
She follows along the stream until the trail goes left and she stays on the stream.
714
She continues walking on the stream when she starts to hear the distant sound of thunder.
715
So she looks up into the sky through the trees and she can see the sky is starting to get dark,
716
but she's still a couple of hours away from sunset.
717
And so between the thunder and the dark skies she knows a storm is rolling in
718
but she is determined to get to that lake and
719
so instead of you know turning around
720
and saying okay I'll come back another time
721
she just starts jogging along the stream to get there as fast as she possibly can
722
and almost immediately as she's jogging the raindrops start to fall
723
and by the time she passes the beaver corpse on the ground
724
it hadn't moved the rain was really coming down
725
and then about 15 minutes after the corpse
726
when she hit the east -west running river that's
727
when the rain was at a full downpour still bella turned at the river
728
and continued west towards the man -made lake as
729
if she was going to go all the way
730
but only about a minute
731
or two into this final leg she still had about 20 minutes to get to the lake she stops herself
732
and she looks at her watch
733
and she can see it's after eight o 'clock already
734
and she's thinking to herself you know
735
if i turn around right now it's going to take me over an hour to get back to my car.
736
Sun sets at 9 p .m.
737
It's after 8 p .m now.
738
So already I know I'm going to have to navigate this forest at night in the dark,
739
even if it's just for a little bit at the end.
740
And if I go all the way to the lake and then come all the way back to the car,
741
I'm going to be in the forest after dark for quite a while, maybe up to an hour.
742
And she's thinking, you know, I'm confident I can do that, but it's also pouring rain.
743
I'm cold.
744
If I get lost, this could turn into a very bad situation
745
and so she ultimately decides
746
that even though she really wants to keep going she needs to turn around she needs to head back
747
and so she turns around
748
and she walks back up alongside this east west running river to where the stream fed into
749
that river she turns
750
and begins walking south along this stream headed back towards the car on her walk
751
because the visibility was starting to get quite bad because it was
752
so dark she had her head down at the ground
753
because she didn't want to trip she's stepping on rocks she's stepping on muddy areas
754
she wants to make sure her footing is solid and
755
so her head is down the rain is pounding all around her
756
and she's walking for about 15 minutes
757
when all of a sudden something hits her in the top of the head
758
and so reflexively she looks up
759
and kind of puts her hands in front of her face to protect herself
760
and she sees what she had just run into it was the beaver corpse it was hanging from a string
761
that was dangling off a branch right above her
762
and this beaver's head had been retrieved and the head had been stitched onto the front paws of this beaver.
763
And so she's looking at this beaver that's dangling from this rope.
764
It's carrying its own head and she's walked square into it.
765
And her first reaction was basically to gag.
766
She was going to vomit.
767
She was so disgusted.
768
And then she began frantically rubbing at her hair where this thing had made contact with her
769
because there could be juices from the decomposition that got on her.
770
And then after frantically kind of patting at her head for a second,
771
she stops and something really terrifying dawns on her whoever strung this beaver up to this tree
772
and then stitched its head onto its paws they had done
773
that in the last 30 minutes because 30 minutes earlier
774
when she was on her way in she remembered passing the beaver carcass on the ground
775
she saw it it had not moved from where it was the week before
776
when she first saw it and now this beaver is strung up in the tree
777
and so as the wheels are turning in Bella's head, she realizes that if someone has just done this then they are probably nearby
778
and at this point it's really starting to get dark the rain is pounding all around her
779
and she starts whipping her head around looking in all directions to see
780
if there's someone out there that did this
781
but as she's looking all she sees is just dark forest in all directions
782
and she knows she's at least one hour even
783
if she runs from her car and so suddenly she is totally panicked
784
and in an effort to calm herself down she says to herself okay i need to get out here
785
but i have to walk
786
if i start running right now this is going to turn into a complete nightmare
787
i just have to try to walk and
788
so she walks around this dangling beaver corpse
789
and starts walking along the stream and as soon as she's passed
790
that corpse she feels the hairs on the back of her neck stand up
791
she can hear movement behind her she doesn't know what it is it could be a deer
792
it could be some animal but she's too afraid to turn around
793
and even though she was trying to tell herself to calm down just keep walking
794
you're safe you're freaking yourself out everything is okay as she's walking
795
she could feel herself starting to speed up until finally
796
she was just running down the stream sprinting actually away from this beaver
797
and whatever it was that was moving around in that area
798
and at some point she got so winded from sprinting
799
so fast that she came to a stop maybe five
800
or six minutes after seeing this beaver
801
and as soon as she comes to a stop and she's walking she still hasn't turned around yet, she hears the sound of that bell.
802
And right away, it's the exact same sound she had heard the week before.
803
It's that kind of constant sporadic sound of someone ringing a bell.
804
But in her panicked state, she doesn't know where it's coming from.
805
She's so scared.
806
Her anxiety is so high.
807
She doesn't know if it's behind her or if it's off to the side.
808
It's now completely dark out.
809
And so she is full -blown terrified.
810
There is someone or something behind her
811
that has strung this beaver up that's probably watching her
812
and she can't see them even though she's beyond winded
813
she can barely breathe she just starts sprinting as fast as she can
814
and as she's stumbling and falling on the rocks and tripping
815
because she's not really looking where she's going in the background
816
and all around her she's hearing this bell chiming
817
and she's hearing something moving around in the woods behind her
818
and she pulls her phone out of her pocket her iphone
819
and as she's running she dials her father
820
she puts the phone to her ear she's crying she's panting she can barely breathe her father picks up
821
and she's so relieved to hear his voice
822
but she can't even make a sentence she just starts crying and wailing
823
and pleading with him dad come out to the forest meet
824
me at the spot where the trail veers away from the stream meet me
825
there there's someone in the forest that's chasing me
826
and i can't see them her father on the other end of the phone
827
he didn't know what to make of this
828
but he could hear the primal fear in his daughter's voice
829
and so he didn't ask any questions he said stay on the line i'm coming to meet you right now
830
so bella's father
831
and mother with bella on the line they run out of their house
832
they hop in their car they speed the couple miles down the road they park next to their daughter's car
833
and as they're running into the woods
834
they can hear way off in the woods the sound of the bell
835
they can hear the bell they hear their daughter screaming on the phone
836
they can hear the bell coming through the phone
837
and she's begging them to please come into the woods come
838
in here save me since the parents run into the woods
839
and they begin running up the stream meanwhile bella who's way out in the woods she's still 10
840
or 15 minutes away from her parents
841
she is barely able to run at this point she's exhausted almost all of her energy
842
and as she's getting closer
843
and closer to her parents the sporadic bell sound is getting louder
844
and louder and louder like whatever it is is gaining on her
845
and she can hear behind her all these sticks
846
and branches they're breaking as if something is coming up to her and finally
847
when it feels like this bell is right behind her head
848
she just kind of stops in defeat she's too far away from her parents
849
she can't get to them in time and
850
so it was almost like she had to turn around
851
and finally look at whatever it was that was behind her
852
and so terrified beyond words bella who can barely breathe she's
853
so scared and so tired she slowly turns around now
854
when she turns around
855
and she's facing the other direction she's looking across this clearing she just happened to run past this clearing
856
and because it was a clearing there was a little bit of moonlight
857
that was coming down through the trees just enough to illuminate this space
858
that was about 50 feet wide
859
and as she's looking across this clearing at first she doesn't see anything
860
and then this tall dark figure walks into the clearing
861
and as soon as it steps in she can see it's got a bell at its waist
862
and with every step it took it would violently ring the bell causing the ringing sound
863
and so this thing starts moving into the clearing
864
and as bella is staring at it it was like time slowed down
865
she could not process what she was looking at she didn't know what she was looking at all
866
she knew is whatever or whoever this is they're coming straight at me
867
and so bella suddenly got this unbelievable adrenaline rush it was like her body went into autopilot to save her
868
and she turned around and began sprinting faster than she'd ever sprinted in her life
869
and as she ran all she could hear was the sound of
870
that bell which she now knew represented steps this thing was taking working.
871
And so the bell was getting faster and faster and louder and louder.
872
And she knew it was gaining on her.
873
And she began lying and screaming out loud that, I'm on the phone with the police.
874
They're right up ahead.
875
They're going to be here any moment.
876
But whatever it was that was behind her, they weren't fazed.
877
They were just charging ahead, gaining on her second by second.
878
Meanwhile, her parents had made it to the meeting spot.
879
But her father, he felt like, I can't just sit here.
880
And he just starts charging into the woods.
881
He can hear his daughter screaming.
882
He can hear this bell getting louder and louder.
883
He just starts running towards it
884
and sure enough seconds later he sees his daughter come bounding out of the forest
885
and she leaps into his arms he just grabs her turns around
886
and runs with her back to the meeting spot he grabs his wife
887
and the three of them just charge out of the forest back to the parking lot back in their car
888
and they speed off in the car all of them are crying
889
they don't know what to make of what just happened bella's trying to describe it
890
but she can't and her parents they had been on the phone listening to their daughter screaming
891
and all they kept saying to each other the parents was i heard the bell
892
i heard the bell i heard the bell as
893
if the bell confirmed their worst nightmares that there really was someone
894
or something out in those woods
895
that was trying to do harm to their child
896
they would drive straight to the police station where bella would
897
file a report about what she experienced out in the forest
898
and then afterwards her parents as a precaution took her to
899
the hospital where she was determined to be okay besides some bumps and bruises from falling down.
900
The following morning the police went out to the forest to the area where
901
Bella had explained where she had been and they searched all along
902
that animal foot trail and all along the stream but they never found any sign of this dark figure with the bell.
903
Bella would tell police that she had a handbag and as she was running back she dropped the bag.
904
She remembered where she dropped it along the stream but when the police went to that area the bag was gone.
905
Also the beaver was no longer there.
906
It was not tied up to the tree.
907
It was not on the ground.
908
It was gone.
909
The only thing police found that was out of the ordinary was they found a little ways off from the stream, basically along the path that
910
Bella would have been running on, they found a t -shirt neatly folded placed underneath a rock.
911
But the police and Bella and her family have no idea what that signifies.
912
Ultimately, the police told
913
Bella and her family
914
that more than likely what she ran into was some kind of mentally unstable person that was living out in the woods.
915
And perhaps when Bella came into the woods, they felt like she was on their property, and so they kind of tried to scare her off.
916
But Bella has a hard time accepting that.
917
She felt like as she was running from whoever was behind her, that she was in mortal danger.
918
That had it not been for her father running into the woods
919
and literally grabbing her and running with her the rest of the way, that she may not have gotten out of the woods at all.
920
That she might have been attacked and killed by whoever this was.
921
She also can't help when she looks back at the entire experience, thinking about that moment when she turned around and looked across
922
that clearing and saw this figure come into the moonlight for the first time that
923
when it came into the moonlight the way it was moving the steps
924
it was taking they weren't normal they were abnormal there was just something off about this thing's movement
925
that it didn't seem like she was looking at a person
926
but rather some big animal
927
but regardless since her ordeal
928
there have been no strange sightings out in those woods however almost no one ever goes in those woods, except for Bella and her family.
929
And Bella and her family, they don't go in those woods anymore.
930
So whoever or whatever is out there is still just out there.
