What will win in a drag race between a Dodge Viper Mk4 ACR

and a BMW E60 M5 in this V10 drag race special?

We're going to find out by racing them over the standing quarter mark.

Let me tell you about this Dodge Viper.

So it's got an 8.4-litre, naturally aspirated V10, which normally puts out 600 horsepower.

However, it's been tuned by the owner with a new vehicle system ECU tweak

so apparently it's got about 650 horsepower now

that drives the rear wheels for a chunky six-speed manual gearbox

this car weighs in at 1 500 kilos is worth about 130 000 pounds

oh hello uh window switches hello just let you know i've

owned this car 11 years yeah nobody's ever driven it apart from me yeah

so don't break it okay okay barry uh barry yes Oh Stormtrooper.

I've driven a Dodge Viper before, you know, a whole series of Dodge Vipers.

Anyhow, let's find out about that BMW.

Nick, give us the stats on the German V10.

Yeah, so this German V10, 5 litres of naturally aspirated gloriousness, 507 horsepower, 520 newton-metres of torque.

This has the SMG gearbox, which is, well, we'll see how that goes, but 7-speed automated robotised manual, rear-wheel drive.

This M5 weighs 1,755 kilos, and, yeah, I'm going to destroy you, Matt.

Wait a minute, you're down on power, you're down on torque, you're up on weight.

I'm not sure you are.

Also, when we're racing, your rod bearings might fail.

when your car was built oh yeah yeah building trucks yeah

all right all right calm down you know what though your car does have launch control

so that could be the difference

so i've got to do this myself got it all manually i know your car isn't great at smooth shifts

but it is good at fast shifts it's got the weirdest launch control method explain it yeah

so you have to press the buttons in a sort of weird secret handshake combination

which I won't bore you with

but then once that's all set up you need to press

the brake push the gear lever forwards hold it forwards take your foot off the brake push the accelerator

and then just sort of flick the gear lever away

and the car takes off apparently yeah

so it's not the normal left foot on brake right foot

on throttle release the brake you've actually released the brake well

beforehand haven't you it's just odd do you know what's interesting though I've got more power well on paper

but I've got

American power it's often overstated you've got German power

which is often understated

so it's probably going to be closer than we think there is nothing understated about

that car is there Matt you've got side pipes you've got a wing it's just loopy

but I do love it and I'll tell you what else I mean they're so different

so yours is pretty conservative by comparison whereas my crazy looking

car also the sound of them yours sounds like I expect

a V10 to sound this doesn't I'm gonna rev mine up

now actually you rev up yours first for a nice classy crisp V10 whale Smooth.

Now you're ready for this.

Admittedly, it's got an aftermarket exhaust on, but have a listen.

I had the vibrations that come through the cabin.

I didn't get a very good launch at all, and shifting manually, which I have to do when I'm not engaging launch control, is no smoother than this SMG at the best of times.

What you need is the gear shift in the top setting, regardless of what you do, and then it should smash them at home.

Oh, you need stability off for the special, special setting, and it won't let you have stability off because there's something wrong with the ABS sensor.
