Hey guys, today I have a stack of 10 books I want to talk about.
2
If you're just trying to get into reading and you don't really know what to read,
3
I really feel like you'll like at least one of these.
4
These are all books that help me get into reading.
5
Most of them I read a long time ago,
6
but some of them I did just read recently.
7
These are some great books that will just make you fall in love with reading.
8
When I was just starting out reading,
9
it was pretty hard to find books that I really liked.
10
And I feel like that's why I didn't enjoy reading for so long.
11
I just wasn't enjoying the books I was reading.
12
So yeah, I'm hoping this video can inspire some of you to dive into some new books
13
and find the type of books that you want to read.
14
All right, I'm going to start out with a book that's honestly kind of insane,
15
and it is The Metamorphosis by Kafka.
16
This is one of like the most famous first lines in a book ever,
17
and I'm going to tell you what it's about.
18
It's not really spoiling it because you learn this right away,
19
but it's about this guy that wakes up and he is turned into some sort of giant insect,
20
and it just opens up with that.
21
There's no explanation.
22
It's really crazy, but it really just hooks you right away,
23
and you just want to keep reading.
24
And it's also very short,
25
so it's a great starter book.
26
And in the book, we follow this guy as he realizes that he's now this insect,
27
but the book doesn't read like it's some sort of fantasy or adventure.
28
He treats it like it's just an inconvenience that he's been transformed into an insect.
29
He's like more stressed about if he's going to be late to work or not than he is about being this bug.
30
So I don't think this book is really about being turned into a bug.
31
It's more about people, you know, the main character.
32
And it's just so weird, but it's so good.
33
You know, he's like the only one supporting his family.
34
He's working this job that he doesn't like.
35
He's doing all this stuff and then suddenly he just can't function anymore because he's not a human.
36
And then we follow the people around him as they react to this.
37
It's actually a pretty sad book because it becomes obvious
38
that he's really obsessed with the value that he provides and when he can't produce that value he's used to anymore,
39
it all just goes downhill.
40
But this is such a good book.
41
Now another thing about Kafka is that he wasn't this famous writer
42
when he was alive at all and I that just makes this book even more interesting.
43
From what I've heard he was actually pretty insecure about his writing.
44
He like wasn't really into it.
45
I definitely need to read more of him
46
because I've only read a couple of his books but this is such a solid book.
47
Super easy to digest if you're new to reading and yeah like I said it's very short.
48
You could read it in one sitting if you wanted to.
49
I think it took me like two days to read it
50
and I still think about it all the time and the writing isn't very dramatic.
51
It's just extremely straightforward, gets right to the point
52
and it's like pretty calm which is weird because the situation is so insane.
53
It's such a ridiculous book but it is just awesome.
54
I think this is a great classic book to jump into
55
if you want to start reading classics because
56
when a lot of people think of classics they think of like a really big boring dense book
57
and this is just not that at all.
58
It's very strange, it's kind of uncomfortable,
59
but it is also very relatable in a weird way and
60
when you finish it you just sit there with it
61
and you end up thinking about it for a long time or I did at least.
62
So yeah I think this is a great place to start.
63
It's very short but it's very memorable.
64
It's just something unique and weird.
65
I love it.
66
Great book.
67
All right, the next book is The Kite Runner by Koled Hosseini.
68
This is another book that will really stick with you for a long time after you read it,
69
and this is just overall a very heartbreaking book.
70
It's really sad, but it's really good.
71
It's set in Afghanistan, and I'm pretty sure the author was actually born there before he moved to the United States,
72
which just makes this book even more interesting,
73
and it makes the setting of the book feel very real.
74
The book follows these two young boys as they grow up.
75
They're They're kind of raised together in the same environment,
76
but they're not really equal.
77
One of them is the wealthy son,
78
and then the other one is the servant son.
79
So there's this interesting dynamic there.
80
And I feel like the entire book does revolve around something that happens.
81
Kind of close to the beginning.
82
I don't want to spoil it.
83
There's just this one key moment that's pretty intense.
84
This is a very readable book.
85
It's not very long.
86
It's not dense.
87
And it's written in a very clear way.
88
So it's very easy to just get sucked in and follow along with the story.
89
Yeah, this book flows very, very well.
90
But with that being said,
91
this book does follow some very traumatic themes with violence and trauma and stuff like that.
92
So this might not be for everyone because there are some scenes that are pretty emotionally distressing.
93
But overall, if I had to sum it up,
94
I would say this book is mainly about guilt
95
and the act of like trying to make something right after you've done something wrong.
96
And it feels very relatable and real because everyone makes mistakes.
97
Everyone makes bad decisions.
98
And we all do things that we regret sometimes.
99
So for me, I felt like I could see myself in the flaws that these characters had.
100
It's super easy to get immersed into this book.
101
I just remember when I read this for the first time,
102
it was very refreshing just because of how easy it was to read.
103
And I have seen some people online don't like this book.
104
So like I said, it might not be for everyone,
105
but personally, I liked it.
106
Next, we have a book that I actually just read recently and that is Siddhartha by Herman Hesse.
107
This is like in my top five favorite books of all time.
108
It is so good.
109
It feels more like you're meditating than reading when you read this.
110
It's very short.
111
It feels very quiet, very calming.
112
And it's also super easy to read,
113
which is why I feel like it would be a great beginner book if you're just wanting to get into reading.
114
And this is one of those books that you can come back to when you're older.
115
I'm probably going to read this many more times in the future because there's so much you can get out of it.
116
It's just such a powerful book and it shows that reading doesn't have to be something super complicated.
117
You don't have to think about it too much.
118
You can just kind of sit down and enjoy a good book and you can learn a lot from just doing that.
119
This book is pretty much just a fictional spiritual journey that this man named Siddhartha has.
120
We follow him through his whole life pretty much and he's just searching for meaning in his life.
121
He's always searching for something and we don't always know what it is but he just lets things pass by.
122
He has all these different experiences
123
and I feel like we could all really learn a lot from the main character in this book.
124
He tries all sorts of different things
125
and every time you try something he thinks it's going to be the answer for him
126
but it doesn't really work out for him and I feel like that's pretty relatable for me at least.
127
You know I'm always thinking about I just need to get this job
128
or I just need to make this amount of money
129
and then I'll finally be happy but I feel like whenever I accomplish something like that,
130
I'll maybe be happy for a little bit,
131
but it's not really lasting and I'll still feel incomplete,
132
if that makes sense.
133
And this book is exactly that.
134
It's written in a very simple way, but it's very poetic.
135
It's really beautiful writing that's not really gonna overwhelm you and it's not too intense or anything.
136
It's just, it's very calm, you know?
137
It's a calm book, that's how I'd describe it.
138
It's very, very accessible.
139
If you're feeling a little bit lost in life and you don't really know what the next steps are for you,
140
I would highly recommend this book.
141
I read it in a time in my life where I was feeling like that,
142
and it really helped me out a lot.
143
Yeah, overall, this book is about just how you have to just experience life and take things as they come.
144
And the end of this book is just awesome too.
145
It's a perfect ending.
146
It's not something crazy, but I feel like it's just exactly how it should have ended.
147
I don't know.
148
But yeah, this really changed the way I thought about my own journey in life,
149
my own path.
150
And after I read this,
151
I was so eager to start reading more again.
152
It really gave me that spark I needed again to get back into reading more books
153
because it really showed me there's so much to gain from reading.
154
Like I said before, it's super short,
155
so go pick this up.
156
I promise it is just great.
157
Okay, so the last book,
158
like I said, wasn't very dramatic.
159
This book is very dramatic.
160
It's The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde,
161
and I love this book.
162
It's like the perfect classic book in my opinion.
163
I knew I was going to like this book as soon as I heard the premise.
164
Pretty much about this guy named Dorian Gray,
165
and he's just the most beautiful guy ever.
166
He's absolutely flawless and he gets his portrait painted
167
and he pretty much wishes that he would no longer age and instead this portrait of him would age.
168
So yeah, it's a very unique story.
169
I've never heard of a story like this before.
170
So when I first read it,
171
I thought it was pretty refreshing.
172
And you know, when he realizes that he's no longer going to age,
173
he starts doing all sorts of things that he probably wouldn't have done before.
174
But what I love the most about this book is the writing.
175
This is the type of book where you just want to underline everything.
176
It's super dramatic, like I I said.
177
It's very witty, but it's also very readable,
178
which is why it's on this list.
179
This might be a little bit harder to digest than some of these other books,
180
but for a classic, I feel like it's pretty easy to read.
181
Like you wouldn't expect this,
182
but at times it's really funny.
183
It can be sarcastic and all that kind of helps you get into the story.
184
And yeah, it just flows really well.
185
This book is very interesting.
186
It explores themes that for the time are very controversial.
187
And because of that, it feels rebellious.
188
And I think that just adds another layer that makes this a really cool book.
189
At the end of the day, it's about image.
190
It's about beauty and your reputation,
191
your status, all this stuff.
192
And all that feels pretty current to today's world.
193
There's a lot of tension when you're reading.
194
It's just a very fun book to read.
195
So yeah, I'd also just say it's a great book for people that want to get into classics,
196
but want something that's not super dry.
197
Like I did not realize I would like a book from the 1800s this much.
198
Yeah, it kind of changed my whole perspective and broke
199
that stereotype that I had in my head that these super old books aren't accessible.
200
And there's some twists and turns in here that are just, it's very intense.
201
Such a good book though,
202
so definitely check this out.
203
Okay, this is a very popular book and it's 1984 by George Orwell.
204
I feel like I always heard about this book for so long and I never read it.
205
It definitely is different reading it than just hearing about it
206
because I did not know I was going to like it this much.
207
The story follows this guy named Winston that lives under this government that pretty much controls every aspect of everyone's lives.
208
They control the language, all the history,
209
the information and even like thoughts
210
and it's just this crazy futuristic world where someone's always watching you you know the whole big brother
211
and you can get a lot out of this book a lot of people have their own interpretation of it
212
but why i put it on this list is simply
213
because it is so entertaining i was
214
so entertained the whole time reading this especially after the first 100 pages
215
or so like it picks up
216
and you get sucked into it there's only ever been a few books that have really sucked me in this much.
217
But yeah, this book's about rebelling against an oppressive system.
218
It's like not a super,
219
well, it's kind of action-packed,
220
but it's not like maybe what you'd expect.
221
It's just a solid dystopian book.
222
And my favorite part about this book is this romance story.
223
And I was not expecting that at all.
224
But yeah, there is a romance aspect to this book,
225
and it is great.
226
Like I said, you can get a lot out of this.
227
You might even look at the world a little bit differently after reading this.
228
It's definitely not a comforting book.
229
It's kind of scary, but it does get you thinking about stuff,
230
which I think is great.
231
It just sucks you in.
232
It's very, very entertaining.
233
So a great book if you just want to get into reading,
234
but don't really know where to start.
235
Check it out.
236
Up next, we have White Nights by Dostoevsky.
237
I read it in this short story collection from Oxford Classics.
238
This is such a good short story.
239
It's super short.
240
I think it's like 80 pages or something like that.
241
Might even be less, honestly.
242
And you know, everyone hears about Dostoevsky and how intense his books are,
243
how difficult they are.
244
If you want to get into that side of reading,
245
I feel like this is a great place to start because it's super short.
246
You can literally just read it in one sitting.
247
It's about this young man living in St. Petersburg and every night he's wandering around the streets.
248
And one night he meets this woman.
249
They end up meeting up a couple of times and that's pretty much what this book is about.
250
Definitely not plot heavy at all,
251
but it's like a very emotional book.
252
You know, the narrator has all these thoughts.
253
He feels like he's invisible and I feel like a lot of people can relate to that a little bit.
254
You know, you can have like your social media,
255
you can have your friends,
256
you can be surrounded with people,
257
but you can still feel alone sometimes.
258
And I feel like Dostoevsky really captures that.
259
So yeah, this isn't one of those giant books like Crime and Punishment or The Brothers Karamazov.
260
Those are great books, but they're also very intimidating for someone that's just wanting to get into reading.
261
I feel like this is just kind of a shorter,
262
simpler version that'll give you a glimpse into his style of writing.
263
Yeah, I think this is a great introduction to Russian literature.
264
It feels very human.
265
It's about longing.
266
I really like how simple the plot is in this book.
267
It's just two people talking.
268
Yeah, it's a great book.
269
And if you like this,
270
you're going to love his other books.
271
So that's White Nights.
272
The next book is Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl.
273
This is another pretty short book.
274
You can get through it in a couple of sittings.
275
But like the previous books,
276
it's very easy to read, very easy to digest.
277
But it does cover some extremely heavy stuff.
278
So the author was actually a psychiatrist,
279
I believe, that survived the Holocaust.
280
He was imprisoned in several concentration camps, including Auschwitz.
281
So the first half of this book is just his memoir going through his life.
282
It's very sad.
283
And then the second half is kind of philosophical,
284
and I feel like together it just pairs so nicely.
285
This book is all about attitude and how your attitude can impact your life.
286
You know, he talks about how suffering is going to happen no matter what,
287
and it's how you respond to it that truly matters.
288
And whether you agree with that or not,
289
it really gets you thinking.
290
And for me, it really changed my perspective on life.
291
I started looking at some of my own things I'm struggling with differently.
292
Overall, this book is very short.
293
It's very clear.
294
It's structured really well.
295
It's just overall a great book if you want to get into reading.
296
It does cover some heavy themes though,
297
like I said, so it might not be for everyone,
298
but if you're up for that, it's a great book.
299
I haven't read this for a long time,
300
but I still think about it a lot.
301
I definitely need to revisit it soon,
302
and this book made me want to read more books that can kind of expand you,
303
you know, make you think about things differently.
304
It really just made me want to go out and find more books like this.
305
So great book.
306
Next up we have Madonna in a Fur Coat by Sabahaten Ali.
307
I just read this like last month and oh man this was such a good book.
308
It really surprised me.
309
Like I was genuinely not expecting to like this as much as I did.
310
The book follows this guy and he's very passive.
311
He doesn't really talk to anyone.
312
He's kind of a loner in his workplace and the book opens up with someone else getting access to his notebook.
313
That's pretty much his journal for his whole life.
314
And then the rest of the book is just his journal
315
and we get to learn about this guy and why he turned out the way he did.
316
This book is all about yearning.
317
In the notebook we learn about his early life when he was younger,
318
living in Berlin, and he met this lady.
319
And they have this very unique,
320
strange relationship, but they, you know, fall in love.
321
It's very emotionally intense.
322
This like longing starts building up throughout the story.
323
And you know, the protagonist has all these problems.
324
He's pretty insecure.
325
He he overthinks about everything.
326
He has a lot of hesitation, so it's pretty relatable.
327
You know, he feels misunderstood by the world,
328
and he feels like his life has pretty much sucked until he met this lady.
329
I'm not going to spoil it, but it's pretty sad.
330
Oh man, pretty devastating.
331
Now, it's on this list because it's fairly short,
332
and it flows really well,
333
like all the other books.
334
Super easy to read.
335
The language is super straightforward,
336
even in translation, because it was written in Turkish originally.
337
I feel like this book is so underrated.
338
I hardly I can't really ever hear anyone talk about it,
339
but it's so good.
340
I can't even really describe it.
341
It just made me feel,
342
I don't know, it just felt like a very unique,
343
charming book, and I hadn't really read anything like it before.
344
But yeah, like I said,
345
I just read it last month,
346
but I'm still thinking about it like every day.
347
Like it really stuck with me,
348
and I feel like this would be a great book if you want to get into something a little bit more unique. So yeah.
349
Okay, next I have After Dark by Haruki Murakami.
350
I know Murakami is pretty polarizing.
351
I feel like people either love him or hate him.
352
But I feel like this book is one of his more tame books.
353
It's pretty short.
354
It's like about 200 pages long.
355
And the entire book just happens over the course of one single night.
356
You know, we follow this young lady as she's meeting all sorts of different people,
357
having all these strange experiences throughout the night in Tokyo.
358
It just has such a unique atmosphere and it really sucks you in.
359
I feel like it just really captures that late night feeling when no one else is up and everything feels paused.
360
I don't know.
361
It's hard to explain, but I really like this book.
362
I feel like I didn't love it when I first read it,
363
but after having time to kind of reflect on it,
364
I've started to appreciate it more.
365
But yeah, it's very calm.
366
I will say one thing about this book,
367
there's a lot of stuff that happens that isn't really explained or you don't understand it until later on in the book.
368
And I know a lot of people don't like that,
369
so if you don't like that,
370
this might not be for you.
371
There's like a kind of a mystery element to it, I guess.
372
This book is definitely different than all the other books I've recommended so far.
373
It's a newer book, but I feel like it's a good gateway into reading just
374
because it really captures this mood so well in a way that I haven't really experienced from other authors.
375
So yeah, it's kind of a weird book,
376
but I really like it.
377
If it sounds interesting, maybe give it a try.
378
And then the final book is also another one I just read last month.
379
If you watched my books I read in January video,
380
you've already heard about it.
381
But if you haven't, It is Stoner by John Williams.
382
Oh, this book is so good.
383
Now, I'll say this right off the bat.
384
Nothing crazy happens in this book.
385
It's just about a man named William Stoner.
386
He grows up on a farm.
387
He ends up going to school to study agriculture,
388
but there he falls in love with reading,
389
and he ends up becoming an English professor at this college.
390
He gets married, has a kid,
391
he gets older, follows his entire life, and that's it.
392
You know, that's the whole book.
393
But this like rewired something in my brain.
394
You know, I always kind of thought the story is what makes a book interesting.
395
It has to have an interesting story.
396
They have to be eventful.
397
You know, something has to,
398
something crazy has to be happening.
399
This book just proves that wrong.
400
I said this in my last video,
401
but I'll say it again.
402
Someone once said that if there's an author that can write a book about a boring story,
403
but make it super engaging and interesting,
404
then that's a really good author.
405
And I'd agree.
406
John Williams did a great job making a very seemingly boring story.
407
Super fun to read.
408
So yeah, this book opened my eyes to that.
409
It's a very relatable book because most of us aren't really doing anything crazy.
410
You know, we're just waking up, living our lives normally.
411
And my favorite thing about the main character in this book is how he never complains about anything.
412
I feel like we can all learn a lot from him.
413
He's definitely not perfect.
414
He makes some mistakes.
415
But if there's one thing you can learn from the main character is that complaining isn't going to get you anywhere.
416
And it's something that I've been trying to work on since reading this.
417
It's crazy.
418
He just lets things happen.
419
It could be something pretty bad,
420
but he'll just go with it and move on with his life.
421
The writing is super calm.
422
It feels almost kind of emotionless.
423
I'm not doing a very good job of convincing you to read it,
424
but I guess the calm writing kind of makes some of the emotional moments hit way harder,
425
if that makes sense.
426
You get to know the main character so well.
427
You know everything about his life,
428
you know everything he's feeling,
429
and it really makes you feel things.
430
It's very emotionally impactful.
431
But why I put this on this list is because our main character here,
432
he falls in love with reading in this book,
433
but he falls in love with reading kind of on accident.
434
It wasn't intentional.
435
And I feel like that's kind of how it was for me too.
436
And it might be how it is for you.
437
We don't really know if we're going to like a book until we jump into it.
438
But when you find that right book,
439
something changes, you know, and you just want to keep reading more and more.
440
Or that's how it was for me, at least.
441
But yeah, it's also super accessible.
442
It's only like 300 pages, less than 300 pages.
443
So it's very short and simple, but very, very impactful.
444
And I will be thinking about this for so long.
445
Definitely need to read more books by John Williams after reading this.
446
So that wraps it up.
447
Those are 10 books that will just get you addicted to reading.
448
I really tried to make sure these books weren't too similar to each other.
449
Of course, I have like my own taste,
450
but I tried to kind of take things from different writing styles and countries and time periods and stuff like that.
451
So I hope you could find at least one book that sparked your interest.
452
And if you have already read some of these,
453
let me know in the comments if you liked any of them.
454
And also let me know if you have any books
455
that really sparked your love for reading because I'd love to hear about them.
456
I read all the comments.
457
I'm so thankful.
458
I love reading them.
459
So thanks so much for the support and leaving all these comments.
460
It's just awesome.
461
But yeah, that's all I have for this video.
462
I'll see you guys later.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
