Creating lesson...
1
Well, hey, it's Heidi and it's travel season.
2
I have 10 tourism etiquette tips for you.
3
We all need a little refresher.
4
Been a minute.
5
Stay tuned.
6
Okay, so you're excited.
7
You're planning a trip.
8
It's about time, right?
9
Okay, so since it's been a little while, let's go through my top tourism etiquette tips.
10
This will ensure you have a seamless, marvelous trip.
11
No etiquette faux pas.
12
It's going to be fabulous.
13
So coming in at number one, be our guest.
14
Yes, do you know really when you leave your home, you become a guest.
15
You're a guest out in the world.
16
You're a guest at a hotel or a train or an airplane or someone else's car.
17
Maybe, you know, when you travel, you are a guest.
18
Maybe you're in another country and you are a guest in that country.
19
So you need to behave as a guest would be very respectful and be very mindful of your surroundings.
20
You are a guest okay well now number two coming in
21
is book early yes okay you know the earlier you can
22
book things the better it's going to be for you
23
and you can book just about anything you want to do
24
day trip sites museums all sorts of things online do it
25
early this can help you skip the queue lots of places you can just pick up your tickets
26
and just go in and this saves all that stress all
27
that waiting everybody starts getting panicky and cranky and you don't want
28
that so book everything as early as you can okay number three be a culture vulture yes get into it
29
if you're traveling to another culture, another part of your country, do some research.
30
Find out what it's like in this culture.
31
Learn a little bit about their traditions, their cultures, their rituals.
32
You know, this is the time to really immerse yourself in another culture.
33
This is why we travel because we travel to grow.
34
This is how we keep improving ourselves and our knowledge base expands.
35
We widen our horizons through travel so be a culture vulture
36
and appreciate the differences between cultures you know it's not going
37
to be like it is at home you know as my dad always used to say a great traveler
38
and my dad would say
39
if you want it to be like home stay home you
40
know pretty good advice today all right my next etiquette travel tip is pack light.
41
Yes, pack light.
42
You really don't need as many things as you think you do.
43
It is so much easier if you have one bag that you're taking with you.
44
You know through planes, trains, and automobiles, the less you have, the easier it is and the better mood you're in
45
and you don't have to pull out all your very best etiquette
46
and try to get all these bags in
47
and it's it's just a lot
48
and you know something i learned years ago you've probably heard this well try it
49
because it works is pack back early pack a couple of days ahead of time
50
pack everything you think you need because you're a culture vulture you've researched the culture You know that in many places, maybe you're visiting places of worship,
51
and for ladies, you need to have your shoulders, maybe your arms covered, and a nice sweater is a great thing to have packed.
52
You need, I never travel without a big pashmina.
53
This can go on me.
54
It can cover my head.
55
It can cover my shoulders.
56
I never leave home without it, is my pashmina.
57
And so the old adage, pack everything early, go to bed that night, give it a rest, forget about it,
58
go back to that suitcase, take everything out, and only put half back in.
59
You'll thank me later because you really don't need that much stuff.
60
Just take the things you know that you will need to be respectful in that culture.
61
Maybe it's really a modest wardrobe.
62
Just do your research.
63
Okay, my next travel tip is...
64
blend in a little bit you know you don't want to
65
be in the situation where you're maybe you're in a very crowded tourist area
66
because you want to see the sights of course
67
and a lot of times unfortunately maybe there could be some pick pockets so
68
if you really stand out as flashing sign i'm a tourist
69
hit me you know easy mark no you don't want that
70
so notice what the locals are wearing do that research ahead of time
71
when you pack lightly you know have some things maybe the
72
big clunky tennis shoes with the white socks maybe you don't take those you know
73
when i travel because you need good travel shoes i i wear echoes they're not running shoes
74
or tennis shoes but they look a little bit better
75
but they're super comfortable i can walk miles in it you know we could do a whole video on packing
76
if you like.
77
Drop me a comment.
78
Okay, so pack light.
79
It's going to be your friend.
80
You'll thank me later.
81
Okay, so blend in.
82
You just don't want to be an easy mark for someone.
83
So sort of notice what the locals are doing.
84
Maybe you leave the big sweatshirt or t -shirt with your alma mater on it and your baseball cap turn backwards.
85
Maybe you don't do
86
that get a nice little hat you know i wear a
87
tilly hat worn it for years it's great great for the sun it's great for rain
88
that tilly hat has served me well so okay
89
so try to blend in it will just help avoid any unfortunate incidences okay
90
so don't speaking of this don't be flashy you don't want to flash that big fancy watch of yours, right?
91
All your expensive jewelry, not the time to wear it when you're traveling.
92
No, when you are flashing expensive,
93
extravagant things, then that could be sort of a signal to someone who might think,
94
geez, I wouldn't mind having that watch.
95
So you don't want to bring upon anything that could be bad.
96
And listen, don't get the wrong idea.
97
Traveling is very safe.
98
Have your wits about you.
99
Watch the time.
100
You know where you can be during what hours. Be sensible.
101
You can travel anywhere in the world.
102
Just be sensible, right?
103
But just don't be flashy because there's no sense.
104
It can just bring unwanted things, bad things to happen.
105
So don't be flashy save that beautiful jewelry for home okay okay
106
so how about this one curb your enthusiasm okay
107
so you're you're say you're in Athens and you're going down the street
108
and you've lost your friends and you're screaming hey where are you guys
109
and you're screaming
110
and you're waving your hands hey over here maybe you should do a little research about the culture
111
and screaming waving your arms madly going down the street might not be appropriate for that culture, and it's not there in Greece.
112
So be mindful.
113
Again, you've already done your research, you're a culture vulture, so watch your enthusiasm a little bit.
114
Don't be that, you know, ugly, loud tourist.
115
You know, just watch your volume.
116
Be respectful, right?
117
That's what etiquette boils down to, being respectful and kind, right?
118
Okay.
119
All right, you've got this.
120
Okay, so our next travel tip is pictures.
121
May I take your picture, please?
122
Yes, never take a picture of anyone, any place without asking permission.
123
In many cultures, it's highly offensive
124
and can be really almost like you're taking a part of someone's soul by taking a picture of them.
125
So you really, really, really need to ask permission first.
126
And many times people will say, oh, yes, that would be fine.
127
And be aware that there are many different areas in the world, monuments, all kinds of different things,
128
especially when you're in museums where it is photo free, no photos allowed.
129
Or maybe it's, you know, just photos are okay, but turn your flash off.
130
Be aware of that when you're taking pictures, because if you're like me, you take thousands of pictures just make sure you're doing it with permission
131
and in the appropriate manner okay because you count on those pictures
132
when you get home it's you know i mean it really
133
relive the trip i know i know i love it okay
134
so another tip here is bonjour learn a few words of the language
135
if you're traveling someplace where there is a different language, learn how to say hello,
136
goodbye, please, and thank you.
137
even maybe how much does this cost?
138
Learn a few phrases.
139
It's easy to do that.
140
You can get it online and find out how to do that.
141
If you have any trouble, you want to know things like that, ask me, drop me a comment.
142
I'll help you with this because it's so nice.
143
People appreciate it in any culture,
144
in any language, you are making an attempt to converse in their language because they're the host.
145
You're in the host country, right?
146
Maybe you're not fluent in that language, but you can make an effort because around the world, so many people do speak English or at least a little English.
147
So, so that helps the, the native English speakers.
148
Okay.
149
So my final tip for you as when you're getting back out there
150
and traveling is to follow the rules you know there are
151
rules stay on this path don't feed the animals don't get too close to the edge
152
or please no pictures here or whatever there the rules are there for a reason
153
and there are very good reasons for them you just don't
154
have privy to the reasons you know it could be a
155
real safety issue it could be these are sacred sites sacred grounds
156
and you're not you're not to walk on them you know you could be someplace where the animals are
157
and you could be disrupting nests or or the ecosystem you just don't know
158
so whatever the rules are find out what the rules are and follow them okay
159
all right oh i wish you a wonderful trip
160
and i know you just need we all need a little refresher on you know, tourism etiquette tips.
161
So here's a few for you today.
162
Please drop me a comment.
163
Let me know how it goes.
164
Love it.
165
If you'd like and subscribe to my channel, please, I really would love that.
166
Thank you in advance.
167
So best of luck, safe travels, Godspeed, and thank you so much.
168
And as I always say, please, anywhere you are around the world, please be kind.
169
Thank you.

Practice Tips for Shadowing & Pronunciation

The video’s friendly, conversational tone makes it ideal for shadowing—repeating phrases aloud immediately after the speaker. Here’s how to practice: Start by listening to short 5-10 second clips. Notice Heidi’s natural rhythm and stress (e.g., "Be a cul-ture vul-ture" or "Book ear-ly"). Pause, then repeat, focusing on matching her pace and intonation. This helps improve English pronunciation and makes your speech sound more natural.

For tricky phrases like "seamless, marvelous trip," break them into syllables: "seam-less, mar-vel-ous trip." Practice saying them slowly, then gradually speed up. Since the video covers travel scenarios, you’ll also build confidence for real-life English speaking practice—whether booking a hotel or asking about local customs.

Remember: Shadowing works best with consistent practice. Try 10 minutes daily, and you’ll soon notice your ability to follow and replicate English speech improve. Ready to start? Press play, listen closely, and let the conversation guide you!

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
