Music From VOA Learning English,
2
this is the Agriculture Report.
3
An area known as a dead zone develops every spring in the Gulf of Mexico near the mouth of the Mississippi River.
4
It can spread as much as 13,600 square kilometers,
5
extending all the way to the eastern Texas coast.
6
Scientists know what causes the dead zone.
7
Too much nitrogen.
8
But the solution might be hard to accept.
9
Bayani Cardenas is a professor of water studies at the University of Texas at Austin.
10
He said the movement of rivers usually removes substances like nitrates.
11
So he wondered why that natural filtration process does not remove nitrates from the Mississippi River.
12
Professor Cardenas said his recent study shows that more than 99% of the river's water does pass through the river's sediment,
13
which is on the shore or bottom of the river.
14
But he said the study found that there is
15
so much nitrogen in the river system that it simply cannot filter all of it.
16
Nitrogen in the water supports the growth of algae.
17
As the algae dies, it sinks to the bottom of the river,
18
where it breaks down or decomposes.
19
It then takes oxygen from the water.
20
This condition is called hypoxia,
21
and it is deadly to fish and shrimp.
22
Where does all this nitrogen come from?
23
The answer is farms.
24
Farmers use nitrogen fertilizer and other chemicals to grow their crops,
25
and that nitrogen washes from the fields into streams and rivers.
26
Storms in the next few months will mix the Gulf water,
27
and the dead zone will disappear,
28
but it will return next year.
29
Scientists say it will grow larger in years to come if something is not done
30
to reduce the amount of nitrogen in the Mississippi River.

About This Lesson

In this lesson, learners will focus on the environmental issues surrounding the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico, a significant area affected by agricultural practices. By engaging with the transcript, you will practice listening comprehension and improve your speaking skills through repetition and understanding of water studies terminology. This lesson aims to enhance your ability to articulate complex environmental issues while naturally integrating the shadowing technique into your speaking practice.

Key Vocabulary & Phrases

  • Dead zone - An area in a body of water where oxygen levels are too low to support most marine life.
  • Nitrogen - A chemical element that is a key ingredient in fertilizers and can cause ecological issues in large amounts.
  • Hypoxia - A condition in which there is insufficient oxygen in the water for fish and other aquatic life.
  • Algae - Simple non-flowering plants of a large group that includes seaweeds and many single-celled forms, which can become problematic when they overgrow.
  • Fertilizer - Substances added to soil to augment its fertility, which can lead to nutrient runoff into water systems.
  • Decomposition - The process of breaking down organic material, often consuming oxygen and impacting aquatic environments.
  • Nitrate - A compound that contains nitrogen and oxygen, often found in agriculture and contributes to nutrient pollution.

Practice Tips

To make the most of this lesson, consider using the shadow speech technique. Start by listening to the video at a normal pace, focusing on the pronunciation of key terms such as "hypoxia" and "decomposition." Then, practice repeating small segments of the transcript out loud. This will help you develop a natural rhythm and improve your enunciation of complex vocabulary.

When shadow speaking, pay attention to the tone and intonation used by the speaker. The environmental topic may require a serious tone, so try to mimic this in your practice sessions.  Additionally, try breaking down longer sentences into manageable parts. By doing so, you can progressively build your confidence in using these terms when discussing related environmental issues.

Consistent practice using the shadowspeak method will greatly enhance your ability to communicate efficiently about environmental topics, making your language skills more versatile and applicable in real-world conversations.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
