1
Have you ever wondered how plants eat?
2
How they grow with just water and sunlight?
3
Or how they are able to produce oxygen?
4
In today's episode, we'll learn all that and a secret way to make a mini greenhouse.
5
Plants begin as seeds.
6
Inside every seed is a tiny baby plant.
7
When the seed receives water, warmth, and air, it begins to open.
8
We call this germination.
9
The tiny seed enjoys the warmth and water.
10
The seed begins to crack open.
11
Tiny little roots begin to form, and eventually, we'll see a tiny shoot from the surface appear.
12
The roots grow underground and help the plants stay in place.
13
The roots are also used to absorb water and nutrients from the soil.
14
The stem holds the plant upright.
15
It carries water from the roots to the leaves.
16
It also carries food from the leaves to the rest of the plant.
17
A plant does not eat food like people or animals.
18
Instead, they make their own food through a process called photosynthesis.
19
Plants need three main ingredients.
20
Sunlight, water and carbon dioxide from the air.
21
Carbon dioxide is an invisible gas that we breathe out of our bodies.
22
It's also the magic ingredient that makes soda bubbly.
23
The leaves use these ingredients to make a type of sugar that gives the plant energy to grow.
24
As a result of photosynthesis, the plant releases oxygen into the air.
25
Oxygen is very important to us.
26
We use it to breathe.
27
So next time you see some plants or trees, make sure to thank them for making oxygen for us.
28
Another interesting thing about plants is that they're mostly green.
29
This is due to a green material inside the leaves called chlorophyll.
30
Chlorophyll captures energy from the sunlight and helps the plant make food.
31
That is why most leaves appear green.
32
When you put it all together, you get a growing plant.
33
Eventually, this plant will produce flowers, fruit, and new seeds.
34
Those seeds may eventually grow into brand new plants, beginning the plant life cycle again.
35
We need plants and they need us.
36
So to help us grow more plants, I want to show you how to create a mini greenhouse.
37
A greenhouse is a cozy glass house for plants.
38
It lets the warm sunlight in and traps the heat inside making a nice environment for plants to grow.
39
First we'll need a few ingredients.
40
A ziplock bag, a paper towel, water, and the seed we want to grow.
41
We'll want to wrap a wet piece of paper towel and lay the seed in or on it.
42
Place the paper towel and seed inside the ziplock bag and you have yourself a greenhouse.
43
You'll want to make sure not to close the bag completely.
44
And when the roots come out, plant the seed in soil.

About This Lesson

You're practicing English with "How Do Plants Grow?" using the Shadowing technique — a method originally developed for professional interpreter training.

Focus on sounding like the speaker — not just repeating words. With 15–30 minutes of daily practice, you'll build real-world speaking confidence.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
