Shadowing Practice: How To Actually Generate Motivation - Learn English Speaking with Video

Creating lesson...
1
Change is primarily an emotional problem, not a rational problem.
2
The information is the easy part.
3
You know, as my friend Derek Sivers likes to say, if change was as easy as more information, we would all be billionaires with six-packs.
4
But we're not.
5
Because the difficulty is getting our emotions to align with what we know is better for ourselves.
6
We assume that motivation is required to generate the action.
7
No, the action is required to generate the motivation.
8
So then this raises the question, Like, how do you get that first action?
9
How do you start that change?
10
And the trick is to make that action as small and easy as possible, right?
11
You wanna start a meditation habit?
12
Don't think about doing a seven day retreat.
13
Just sit down on the pillow for one minute.
14
And then what happens is you sit for 60 seconds and you're like, well, I'm already here.
15
I might as well do 10 minutes.
16
And then you do 10 minutes and you're like, well, that was nice.
17
Why don't I do five more, right?
18
And then you start building a little bit of a snowball.
19
The mistake that everybody makes is they try to bite off way too much to begin with.
20
The goal is to narrow our focus to that first step,
21
generate the momentum, start accumulating evidence of a new identity by accumulating new behaviors.
22
Those new behaviors give you the momentum to continue.
23
And then as you continue, you start generating new emotional patterns, new experiences, new ways of seeing the world and seeing your life.

  • Start Small: When practicing shadowing, start with short phrases or sentences before attempting longer sections. This gradually builds your confidence and allows you to focus on clarity.
  • Use a Shadowing App: Consider using a shadowing app that allows you to repeat after the speaker in real-time, helping you to synchronize your speech with theirs.
  • Focus on Emotions: Pay attention to the emotional tone of the speaker. Emulate their enthusiasm or seriousness to better understand the context of the phrases you are learning.
  • Repetition is Key: Repeat sections multiple times until you feel comfortable. Each repetition will solidify your understanding and enhance your ability to speak fluently.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
