19
Well thank you very much for inviting me to be interviewed for this project manager position today with your organisation.
20
Over the years I have built up extensive skills,
21
qualities, attributes and experience that I believe are a match for this job description.
22
I am very passionate about project management.
23
I take my responsibilities seriously.
24
I am an exceptional communicator, both in writing and when speaking with project team members, stakeholders and contractors.
25
And I'm very good at building relationships with people because I believe to be effective as a project manager, you need to build strong relationships.
26
I'm also very good at working under pressure and I particularly thrive when I have very tight project deadlines to work towards.
27
I also have in-depth knowledge and understanding of the project life cycle
28
and I understand how to apply different elements of it to make sure all projects are completed on time
29
and more importantly to specification and to the required standards.
30
So over the years I've worked in a variety of different
31
roles managing lots of different projects lots of different peoples
32
and I always pride myself on making sure that I achieve the commercial
33
and financial objectives of my employer I am the type of person
34
that if you employ me as your project manager I will quickly make a big difference in the projects
35
that I am managing whenever I manage the projects I will align them to your strategic vision
36
and I plan to become an integral part of your organisation as a project manager.
37
Thank you.
38
Why do you want to be a project manager?
39
There are several reasons why I want to become a project manager.
40
The first reason is the fact that I enjoy the level of responsibility that comes with this position.
41
I like the challenge that the role presents.
42
I also like the fact
43
that being a project manager there is always something new to
44
learn now even though i am not young anymore i am highly inexperienced
45
but i also believe that i always have something new to learn
46
and if you have that attitude and your approach
47
when being a project manager then that enables you to continually improve
48
and excel within the position i enjoy working under pressure i particularly thrive
49
when i am given very tight deadlines to meet so if you you say to me, Richard, we have a project that needs to be taken over,
50
but the deadline is really tight, then I will apply myself I will analyze the project see
51
what we need to do to get it to work on time
52
and get completed to the required standard I particularly enjoy being in
53
that type of situation I like
54
if I'm being honest being the person who's in control you
55
know I like to take control of projects I have the
56
experience needed to deal with difficult people difficult contractors at times and I'm very very good at building relationships with people.
57
I like the fact that being a project manager there is a lot of sense of achievement
58
that comes with the position so there is in my opinion no better feeling than completing a really good job, really good project for your employer.
59
So basically I enjoy the challenge that comes with being a project manager, I like dealing with people, I like being placed under pressure,
60
I like the fact that you get to learn and develop within the role continuously.
61
Thank you.
62
What are the five stages of the project lifecycle?
63
The five stages of the project lifecycle are initiation,
64
planning, execution, monitoring and control and also the closing and testing stage.
65
So the initiation stage of the project lifecycle
66
would involve me sitting down with the senior management team yourselves
67
discussing what the project requirements are the purpose of the project
68
and what it is you need me to achieve
69
so i would ask several questions about what it is you need me to do
70
and achieve as your project manager once the initiation stage is established i would then go away
71
and start planning the project how am i going to achieve the goals of the project
72
and more importantly to make sure
73
that it is completed on time i would then look at
74
conducting the execution stage of the project who's going to do what what resources do we need
75
and again who's going to carry out each task within a specific time frame
76
and it's very important that when you are executing the um
77
the project that you have the right people in place to do the jobs based on their strengths
78
and also their experience so the next stage is the monitoring
79
and control stage as i said at the start of the interview i like to be the person in control
80
so even though i will give project team members a level of autonomy the book rests with me
81
so the responsibility of the project rests with me
82
and i will take control of the project i will steer i will respond to problems as
83
and when they occur or try and foresee any problems
84
but i will monitor the performance of my team whether it's face to face
85
or remotely and i will make sure
86
that i have control of the project to ensure
87
that it meets each key stage element
88
that we need to meet to get it over the finishing
89
line finally the closing stage is where we assess whether the project has met the specification
90
and also the testing stage we need to make sure
91
that the project works that it meets the initial initiation stage the objectives of the project
92
so those are the five different key elements of the project lifecycle
93
that I would follow as a project manager thank you what are the most important skills
94
and qualities needed to be a project manager the most important skills
95
and qualities needed include an in-depth understanding of the project lifecycle which I've just discussed.
96
You need to have exceptional people skills
97
because as a project manager you need to build really good relationships with people
98
and there needs to be a level of respect
99
and a level of professionalism
100
because you as the project manager are going to make unpopular decisions
101
but you need people to work for you to get the
102
project over the finishing line you need to be a really
103
good leader undoubtedly yes you need management skills as a project manager
104
but you need to be a good leader you need to be able to motivate your team
105
team to help them to feel inspired about the project and to do it to the best of their abilities.
106
You also need to be an exceptional communicator, both when speaking with people and also when writing reports.
107
Everything has to be accurate, it has to be clear and concise so
108
that people in the project team understand what it is they need to do and by what time frame.
109
And you need to be a good listener. So
110
if there are problems within a team you need to listen
111
to them carefully get to the root of the problem
112
because then that gives you information
113
that will enable you to make the right decisions moving forward i also believe some of the most important skills
114
and qualities needed include the fact
115
that you need to foresee potential problems down the line you need to look ahead strategically
116
and think to yourself we're part way through this project what could go wrong
117
and have a plan in place to deal with them you also need to be consistent
118
so people see that you are a consistent project manager because
119
that enables you to build trust
120
and you have to build trust amongst your team members
121
and with the stakeholders the contractors and the suppliers
122
that you are inevitably going to use finally another most important skill
123
or quality is conflict resolution so undoubtedly there will always be problems
124
or conflict within a project team that you are managing
125
and you have to jump on that quickly and resolve it to enable the project to continually move forward.
126
Thank you.
127
How would you handle underperformance in a team?
128
Whenever dealing with underperformance as a project manager I will take decisive action quickly
129
because I believe that a project can quickly fall down
130
if just one member of the team is not carrying out their duties to the necessary standard
131
and it also looks bad from other team members perspectives
132
so they would look at it and think
133
that person isn't helping the team and it can quickly escalate
134
so i would make sure that i jumped on it quickly
135
and i would speak to the individual to establish exactly why they weren't performing to the required standard
136
and i would ask them questions
137
and i would listen whilst they were speaking i would never
138
jump to conclusions they may be experiencing problems at home for example
139
which would be impacting on their ability to work effectively
140
so I'd find out what the problem was
141
and I would then put a plan of action in place to make sure
142
that they got back up to speed quickly
143
but they also need to agree with this plan of action
144
they need to be on board fully with what they need to do to get back up to speed
145
and it might be the case that they don't have the right tools
146
or resources to do their job properly
147
or they may not have been given the right training
148
and in which case I would make sure that that was rectified straight away.
149
But being a confident and assertive project manager I would tackle underperformance quickly and decisively.
150
Thank you.
151
What are your strengths and weaknesses?
152
I would say my strengths
153
which I believe will be a benefit to your organisation include the fact
154
that as a project manager I am commercially aware and I understand that my performance
155
and the performance of the team
156
that I am managing is integral to the success of your business
157
and I will always work with you to make sure
158
that all projects are completed on time and again to the necessary specification and standard.
159
Other strengths include the fact that I am a good communicator.
160
I'm good at dealing with people, I am good at motivating people and I am a very good leader and I take responsibility for things.
161
Everything rests with me.
162
It's down to me how a project goes and I will always be open to learning and improving.
163
So once a project is finished, I'll always analyse a project to see where we went wrong or how we can improve for next time.
164
And on that basis, I am somebody who will always ensure high standards are adhered to at all times.
165
Other strengths include the fact that I have the ability to foresee problems.
166
I'm very good at that.
167
So I have the experience to look ahead and think that could go wrong, that could hinder the progress of the project.
168
So let's take decisive action now.
169
Let's put a plan B in place to make sure that it doesn't affect us.
170
In respect of my weakness, I would say that I find it hard asking other people for help
171
because I'm the type of project manager who likes to be in control.
172
I have belief in my own abilities.
173
and when a problem occurs I tend to spend time thinking right how can I resolve this
174
and of course sometimes the simple solution will be to pick
175
up the phone speak to somebody else in the organization to get their advice
176
and guidance but having said that another strength of mine is the fact
177
that I am always open to learning and improving
178
and I am trying to be more mindful in situations like
179
that whenever they do occur thank you how do you handle conflict in the team?
180
The first thing I will do whenever I experience conflict amongst team members is to let them know
181
that I am aware the conflict exists.
182
If two people know that I am aware of the conflict they are more likely to resolve it quickly.
183
Whenever I start managing a team I always lay out the foundations of what i expect
184
and how i expect people to operate
185
and one of those is to let them know
186
that whenever there is conflict they need to sort it out quickly
187
because otherwise it will hinder the progress of our project now
188
if they are unable to resolve the conflict i will step
189
in i will analyze what the problem is what the viewpoints are of the people experiencing the the conflict
190
and I will then make a decision that's always in the best interests of the project
191
and the organization that I am working for.
192
I am a confident person who will resolve conflict quickly and I have the experience and the resources to do so.
193
Thank you.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
