1
No one is gonna tell you, here's an opportunity, go make something of yourself.
2
You're gonna do it for you.
3
Because people are only gonna try and take it away.
4
And it's so important for us to be able to empower each other.
5
In everyday life, we don't have to conquer the world.
6
You don't have to be the only person who reaches space.
7
You don't have to have crazy wild ambitions.
8
You just have to find your power.
9
Priyanka, you are a global icon.
10
You have a career spanning over 20 years, multiple continents, multiple industries.
11
You have over 100 million followers.
12
Authentic followers, I will also say.
13
Real followers, global followers.
14
And people all over the world look to you for inspiration.
15
You're the first South Asian woman to be a star of a US TV network, right?
16
but after our conversation the other day i realized i think america is just getting to know you
17
so the question for everyone who's here is who is who
18
is priyanka who are you i think i'm kind of trying to figure
19
that out myself and i think it's okay not to know um
20
we spend our entire lives trying to figure out who we really are and then we change.
21
And then we figure it out and then we change again.
22
And I think that's the most constant, right?
23
I'm constantly changing, constantly evolving, and I'm hoping that everyone's still curious about me as I keep doing that.
24
You mentioned something the other day that when women are pitted against each other in any industry that everyone loses.
25
And so that's such a wise
26
and evolved way to think about things tell me how you've come to realize
27
that at such a young age well a couple of things i have a hypothesis
28
so i feel like we i've had
29
so many times whenever i'm doing interviews people always ask me
30
that oh you're doing a movie with you know a female
31
co-actor did you guys get along were there cat fights but
32
when it comes to boys they say oh my gosh that looks like a bromance and everyone got on so well.
33
So I feel like over time, because women had the lack of opportunity, we were pitted against each other because we had,
34
there were only like five opportunities, like five places a woman could be hired.
35
And so we were elbowing each other out to get to that one spot.
36
So the crux of the problem is the lack of opportunity for females.
37
And the more opportunity we create for each other, the more sisterhood will grow.
38
We're 50% of the world's population.
39
That's right.
40
We need to be represented in every field like that.
41
We need to be empowered by each other, by the people who are in positions of power, by putting us in positions of power.
42
So I realized many, many years ago that the more I champion women in my own small way, I'm going to say, maybe I'll be able to create a world,
43
around me at least, where women run the show because we kind of do it really well.
44
We just aren't given the opportunity enough.
45
Women are statistically, based on the data, working twice as hard as their counterparts to earn the same dollar.
46
And this is an issue for me that everyone knows I'm very passionate about.
47
And women of color are working three times as hard.
48
Why is it that you think we're held to such higher standards?
49
And what are those standards we're held to?
50
So every generation of women somehow has to fight for the right of empowerment for the next generation of women.
51
How many of you drive?
52
Do you remember there was a time when women couldn't?
53
Today, we don't even think about it because those women fought for us.
54
So how many of us vote as females?
55
Put your hands up.
56
There was a time we couldn't.
57
Now we don't even think about it.
58
So we, as women, everyone in this room and everyone in this world has a responsibility to our future daughter,
59
to our future granddaughter, to change the world in a way where they don't have to think about lack of opportunity.
60
They don't have to think about diversity.
61
Diversity shouldn't even be a conversation.
62
It should be normal.
63
When we look around this room, there's not one kind of person.
64
I don't even see one kind of person in one row.
65
And that's our normal.
66
And that's the world we will create for our daughters, for our kids.
67
We will create men that empower the girls around them.
68
We will create men that respect the girls around them and create a legacy for their children going forward.
69
And I think that's our responsibility, and we need to take that really, really seriously.
70
One of the things that I love about you is that you are now investing in tech.
71
And up, yes.
72
And your manager also has been like a prolific investor within the space.
73
And so I know you've invested in Bumble.
74
And now you've invested in a tech incubator that's supporting young women who are learning how to code.
75
Why is that important to you?
76
I just love growing.
77
Like I said, I think growing is a very important thing.
78
And when I was very young, I started working when I was 17 years old.
79
And I remember my mother telling me this really young, that women should be financially independent.
80
It doesn't matter who your father is, doesn't matter who your husband is going to be, doesn't matter who your brother is, it doesn't matter who the man in your life is.
81
You need to be responsible for your finances and be financially independent.
82
And that kind of really stuck with me.
83
And as my career expanded, it was really important for me to invest in little things.
84
So once I discovered tech, I have always been a fan of technology.
85
I wanted to be an aeronautical engineer at one point.
86
I wanted to build rockets.
87
I wanted to, you know, go to space.
88
But then I became an actor.
89
Go figure.
90
And when I got the opportunity, I remember I was at a dinner for Bumble in New York, and I just thought it was such a cool,
91
cool thing to bring back to India, where women take the first move, to bring it to a country which has a patriarchal sort of society, which actually the world is.
92
The world over is sort of patriarchal, and we as women need to fight to change that, to create that kind of equality, because no one's going to give it to us.
93
and they're going to fight for us to have it.
94
So it started from taking Bumble to India and then my next investment is this engineering school which is called Holburton
95
which was based on Betty Holburton.
96
She was one of the first female engineers in the world
97
and this school is a peer-to-peer teaching program where you don't have to pay a tuition
98
and you can pay back your tuition after you graduate
99
and get a job so that you don't have to worry about you know, how much schools cost, so that females can actually be a part of engineering.
100
Just think about it this way.
101
All of us consume tech, right?
102
All of you have cell phones.
103
Everyone has computers.
104
We're always online.
105
Digital is such a big part of our lives.
106
But the people creating technology, it's so skewed because it's mostly men.
107
And these are men who decide what we as women need.
108
So we need females to come into engineering as AI starts coming in.
109
and it's going to be a big part of our lives.
110
Can you imagine the artificial intelligence that we are consuming being created by guys?
111
And guys are going to decide what kind of things we like.
112
So we need women to come in and realize
113
that tech is a big part of who we are and who we are going to be and our future.
114
So hence me investing in the engineering school.
115
I really love female-driven companies and I like to give them as much strength as I can
116
with my platform and that's a big quest of mine in life.
117
Okay.
118
Beauty has always been a big part of your life.
119
I know that when we asked you to come, I know that you had a genuine interest in beauty.
120
What does beauty mean to you?
121
I feel like you've answered that.
122
But I think your perspective is even more interesting because you are in a constant time zone.
123
You are flying around the world.
124
You see a lot of different cultures.
125
Where do you think global beauty is now going?
126
Where is it going?
127
I think travel and meeting different people of different ethnicities
128
and different parts of the world is so important to expand our minds.
129
Even if you just are interested in different countries
130
or what kind of music people like to listen to
131
or what are the stories or just being curious about different cultures instead of being scared of them.
132
I think we've also become, we're living in a world where we're so afraid of different that when something is different, we'd rather not be curious.
133
We'd rather be like, all right, I don't want to offend someone or I don't want to say something wrong.
134
Instead of being curious and saying, well, what is your name?
135
And where do you come from?
136
And what do you like?
137
I would love to see beauty go to, that's what inclusivity to me is.
138
Not just seeing different races on a billboard, but actually getting to know different people actually Understanding what different people might be like we've forgotten
139
that eventually we're all human
140
It's this one little planet that we have
141
which in this big universe is really tiny
142
So we should stop giving ourselves so much importance
143
and saying oh well you're better than me or I'm better than you
144
we all are basically humanity and let's like go back to
145
that and bring compassion and kindness into beauty and not be
146
so hard on ourselves or other people the standard of beauty
147
that the world of entertainment actually has created is the culprit
148
and it's so beautiful to see the kind of inclusivity
149
that we're seeing now it has a long way to go
150
but i love the fact that there's a conversation around it
151
and you see
152
that difference i think um we're really counting on this next generation to take this opportunity to heart
153
so that we can start to see business influenced by our point of view
154
and that'll take us finding our own confidence ladies no one is going to give
155
that to you no one is going to tell you here's
156
an opportunity go make something of yourself you're going to do it for you
157
because people are only going to try and take it away
158
And it's so important for us to be able to empower each other.
159
In everyday life, we don't have to conquer the world.
160
You don't have to be the only person who reaches space.
161
You don't have to have crazy wild ambitions.
162
You just have to find your power and to say that, oh, I can do this too.
163
I don't have to create this crazy opportunity for me to thrive.
164
You can thrive in anything you choose.
165
You just have to find that confidence within yourself.
166
And how do you find that confidence?
167
By telling yourself that your flaws are fine.
168
Each one of us is flawed.
169
No one is perfect.
170
None of us.
171
We all have bad days.
172
We're all gonna feel like shit sometimes.
173
Sorry for my French.
174
Feel like bad sometimes.
175
We're on the internet.
176
We can say what we want.
177
Okay, great.
178
But you're all gonna have bad days and that's fine.
179
We have this crazy standard, especially with the internet, where everything has to be perfect all the time and we have to look perfect, we have to behave perfect,
180
we have to say the right things.
181
Everyone screws up and that's all right.
182
Laugh through it, don't take yourself too seriously and make sure that you don't live for someone else's validation.
183
It's your validation that you need.
184
you

  • “You have to find your power.” –
  • “We need to be empowered by each other.”
  • “Women are statistically working twice as hard.” –
  • “It's okay not to know.”

Shadowing?
