Hey you guys, welcome to this channel.
2
My name is Alba and I'm an English teacher.
3
I've been teaching English for more than eight years now
4
and today I just wanted to sit down and have a nice little chat with you.
5
English is my second language.
6
I learned it as an adult.
7
So in today's video, I'm going to share with you some of the tips that have helped me improve my speaking,
8
listening and just overall confidence.
9
So here's the thing.
10
Back in school, I was really good at English.
11
At least that's what I thought.
12
Well, English was my favorite subject.
13
I absolutely loved it and my teachers were very happy with my performance.
14
And later I went to college, studied business English there.
15
Then something happened.
16
I moved abroad and I started making friends who were native speakers as well as non-native speakers and I realized something.
17
My vocabulary was so limited.
18
I struggled to understand people,
19
especially in fast casual conversations.
20
And don't even get me started on speaking.
21
I couldn't express myself.
22
I was hesitating and just felt stuck all the time.
23
And that's when it hit me.
24
Even though I had studied English for years,
25
I had almost no real practice.
26
In school, we did a lot of grammar exercises like filling in the gaps,
27
reading, and stuff like that.
28
But we almost had no listening or speaking practice.
29
At that time, I decided to do something with it.
30
You know, I made a decision to start improving my speaking and listening.
31
I started watching TV shows,
32
movies, YouTube videos in English every single day.
33
So sometimes I would just play it in the background,
34
you know, while doing some chores and stuff.
35
But most of the time I was really paying attention.
36
And my goal was not to understand every single word or like translate every unfamiliar word.
37
No, my goal was to help my ears and my brain get used to hearing English speech every day.
38
And here's something that I've noticed,
39
not just in myself, but also in my students.
40
I can immediately tell when a student watches content in English.
41
It's just so obvious.
42
The ones who do, they sound more natural,
43
they understand native speakers better,
44
they're more comfortable with different accents,
45
and most importantly, they have a better sense of the language.
46
It's just like they can feel it, you know?
47
So if you're not doing this already,
48
seriously, pick a show or a YouTube channel you like and make it a daily habit.
49
And also what I usually recommend to my students,
50
do not try to understand every single word, you know?
51
Don't pause every time you hear an unfamiliar word and look it up in the dictionary or translated.
52
That's not the whole point of watching videos or TV shows.
53
The point is to enjoy this process, right?
54
Trick your brain into learning English in this easy, lazy way.
55
If you start translating every word and writing the words down,
56
this is not enjoyable.
57
Yeah, this is a daunting task and your brain will not like it.
58
So yeah, you can turn on the subtitles if you wish,
59
but you don't have to understand every single word,
60
especially if you are a beginner.
61
Moving on to the next tip, let's talk about shadowing.
62
Boy, do I love this method.
63
I just wish I was more consistent with it.
64
So shadowing is when you repeat what a native speaker says immediately and as accurately as possible,
65
and you imitate, you try to copy their tone,
66
their rhythm, their pronunciation, everything.
67
However, a lot of people find this technique uncomfortable.
68
They say that it just doesn't feel natural.
69
They feel like they're pretending to be somebody else.
70
And they say, what if I lose my voice?
71
What if I lose my individuality?
72
But shadowing is not about becoming a different person.
73
It's about training your mouth and your muscles to produce the correct English sounds.
74
Think about it.
75
When you speak in your native language,
76
you use a certain set of muscles, right?
77
But for English, we need to use different ones.
78
And if those muscles aren't trained,
79
you simply cannot produce the sounds correctly.
80
So when we shadow or imitate native speakers,
81
our goal is not to copy their identity,
82
but to build muscle memory to train those pronunciation skills and to become more comfortable and fluent.
83
So how do you choose a native speaker that you would like to shadow or copy?
84
I personally have a couple of girls,
85
bloggers, YouTubers that I follow and I love their voice.
86
I love how they express themselves.
87
I love their accent, their pronunciation.
88
I also noticed that it's not just about their voice but also about their personality.
89
So if their personality matches my vibes,
90
I'm more willing to practice shadowing with them.
91
This technique changed the way I speak and it's done the same for many of my students.
92
So highly, highly recommend you try it as well.
93
Another thing that I absolutely love doing is reading out loud.
94
I truly believe that people who read a lot express themselves better.
95
They sound more sophisticated, more clear,
96
their speech is well structured.
97
So whether it's a book,
98
an article, a magazine, a newspaper,
99
or whatever you enjoy, just read it out loud.
100
And the last tip, I just have to mention it.
101
It's not going to surprise you because all the teachers talk about it all the time.
102
Practice English with real people.
103
The only way to get comfortable with speaking is to speak.
104
And I'm talking about real people,
105
not AI, not chatting online, which is also good.
106
It can be useful, right?
107
But nothing can replace real human communication because this is how we develop soft skills,
108
how we build connections with the language and with the people,
109
how we start using it as a tool, a communication tool.
110
That's the whole point of learning a language, isn't it?
111
And how do you do that?
112
How do you find somebody you can practice with?
113
Well, there are lots of different apps and platforms available where you can find teachers,
114
tutors, language exchange partners.
115
You just try them and see what's best for you.
116
So that's pretty much it.
117
I have a lot more to say but it's getting dark outside and I have to wrap it up.
118
Anyway in the end I just wanted to mention that the key to learning a language in my opinion is consistency.
119
Stay consistent, stay curious, and surround yourself with English every day.
120
Let me know in the comments below what you think of these tips.
121
If you find this video helpful,
122
give it a like, subscribe,
123
and share it with someone who's learning English too.
124
Thanks so much for watching.
125
I'll see you next time.
126
Bye!

  • “I decided to start” - Эта структура указывает на принятие решения и может быть внутренней мотивацией для вас начать изучение.
  • “I was struggling to understand” - Используйте эту фразу, чтобы описать трудности, которые вы испытываете.
  • “It’s just like they can feel it” - Выражение чувства языка, что может быть полезно в разговорах о вашем прогрессе.

Shadowing?
