Welcome to another video.
2
In this video we're going to have a look at minimal pairs for short and long vowel sounds.
3
What are minimal pairs?
4
Let's have a look at an example.
5
We have the words fit and feet.
6
Fit is an adjective and feet is a noun in the plural form.
7
Let's look at the pronunciation.
8
Here you can see the phonemic transcript are fit and feet.
9
Look carefully at the sound symbols.
10
We have a consonant, a vowel and another consonant.
11
The only difference is the vowel in the two words.
12
We have in fit and in feet.
13
And these two words are a minimal pair.
14
There's only one different sound in the same position and everything else is the same.
15
And that makes it a minimal pair.
16
Remember, you can always comment under all my videos and make suggestions for future videos or ask questions.
17
Thank you to Alexander who left me this comment and asked specifically for more examples and minimal pairs.
18
So Alexander, here you go.
19
Let's get started.
20
Let's practice minimal pairs for I and E first.
21
This is what you have to do.
22
First of all, listen to the word.
23
Then decide, does it contain a short I or a long E? And then simply check. So here we go.
24
We have 10 minimal pairs for I and E.
25
I'm only going to read one of the words out loud and you need to decide which one.
26
If you're watching this live, you can type your answer in the live chat.
27

82
The short I is always spelled with an I.
83
The long E is often spelled with double E or EA a
84
but not always because in he we only have an e.
85
Let's do another activity for those minimal pairs using other words
86
but again we will focus on e and e and the question is can you match the minimal pairs together?
87
Have a look.
88
Here they are.
89
We have words with E on the left and words with E on the right.
90
And you need to match the minimal pairs.
91
Now if you want to read all of the words first,
92
please pause the video now and read over them carefully.
93
And I would encourage you to read the words out loud.
94
We're going to start.
95
We're going to match the words on the left with the words on the right.

120
and you need to guess which one.

Об этом уроке

Вы практикуете английский с "Minimal Pairs Exercise: Long and Short Vowels - Better Pronunciation | Phonology" с помощью техники Shadowing — метода, разработанного для подготовки профессиональных переводчиков.

Слушайте каждое предложение, обращайте внимание на ударения и связывание звуков, затем повторяйте вслух уверенно. 15–30 минут ежедневной практики дадут заметные результаты.

Что такое техника Shadowing?
