And of course they start to cut the grass the second I start recording.
2
Hello, hello, welcome or welcome back.
3
If you're new here, hello, I'm Jean.
4
It's nice to meet you.
5
Today we have another episode of English Extras.
6
This podcast is to help intermediate and advanced learners improve their English.
7
And today, once again, I have my question jar.
8
This question jar related to learning English.
9
So let's see what we get today.
10
Thank you.
11
Okay, today's question is, do you really need to study English every day?
12
Do you really need to study English every day?
13
Okay, this is an interesting question.
14
This is actually a question that I get pretty often.
15
So let's talk about it.
16
So very often...
17
when I am live streaming.
18
And currently I live stream twice a week for everyone, Fridays and Sundays.
19
I very often get asked about My advice to improve English.
20
Usually my advice is find what works for you.
21
Find what you can do with English consistently.
22
I really talk about and push this idea of connecting with English,
23
every day and having good habits that let you connect with English every single day.
24
I want to be clear.
25
I'm not talking about studying.
26
English every single day.
27
You do not have to have a textbook or a course or a class to learn English.
28
So I believe that you do not have to study English every day,
29
but I do think you should use English every day.
30
So I have a couple of tips for you about how to do this, because I do think it's important.
31
And before I give you these tips, I will explain why I think this is important.
32
So the difference between studying and using.
33
Studying is a very focused active practice.
34
Think things like classes, courses, grammar drills, writing practice, things like this.
35
That's studying.
36
That is active, focused, practice versus using English.
37
Using English is more organic less structured,
38
more natural, and it's more about exposure and engagement.
39
So thinking things like YouTube videos that are about topics you're interested in,
40
not grammar, not lessons, just something you find interesting.
41
Or Watching a movie or a TV show.
42
Listening to music.
43
These are all ways to use English.
44
Personally, I think that using English
45
Meaning having consistent exposure
46
and engagement with the language is the key to real fluency versus the kind of memorization that comes from school and studying.
47
Now, here's the thing.
48
I do understand that daily routines are busy.
49
You have a lot to do.
50
You're working hard or you have a family or you're working hard and you have a family.
51
And also things like motivation changes.
52
Like motivation is not reliable.
53
I actually have an entire episode about that, about why you shouldn't.
54
rely on motivation, I believe that even small moments count.
55
Actually, I think small moments are the most important
56
because it's small moments that make up the fabric of our day -to -day lives.
57
So the question is, how can you make English part of your life?
58
without making it a chore.
59
So let's get to those tips.
60
Tip number one is turn your passive time into English time.
61
So what I mean by that is While you're doing something else, Like...
62
Doing chores.
63
Cooking dinner.
64
going to work, exercising.
65
While you're doing things that are already part of your daily life,
66
these kind of like, dead moments or the dead time in your life listen to something in English.
67
to a podcast, a YouTube video, music.
68
If you're going to be doing something else anyway, you might as well put English on in the background.
69
You don't have to focus on it.
70
But bringing it into your life helps keep the language alive.
71
It's about consistent exposure which is more important than focus.
72
I think.
73
So you don't have to focus on it.
74
You don't have to worry about it.
75
Just have it in the background.
76
Let your brain do its thing.
77
Because your brain will find patterns even if you're not consciously thinking about it.
78
My second tip is to switch one small thing to English.
79
So switching your phone, like the entire phone, to English might be a bit much,
80
but switch the language of a single app to English.
81
Not something important like your banking app or anything like that, but something you use consistently, like social media.
82
Actually, social media can be a fantastic way to bring English naturally into your daily life.
83
follow accounts on social media, in English, read the comments in English,
84
or put on English captions.
85
All of these are small bite -sized ways to bring English into your life naturally.
86
Tip number three is to make English part of your inner world.
87
So what do I mean by inner world?
88
So something that I hear a lot is how do I improve my speaking?
89
I can understand, but I can't speak.
90
I recommend.
91
something like this.
92
Make English part of your inner world.
93
Start narrating your life your day -to -day life in English.
94
even silently to yourself in your head.
95
Start telling yourself what you're doing.
96
You would be surprised how effective
97
this exercise is because you will very quickly start to realize gaps in your vocabulary or in your grammar.
98
Another way is to write short notes or to -do lists in English.
99
So when you are planning your work day or planning your week, write your to -do lists in English.
100
or if you like to journal, or keep a diary.
101
Do that in English.
102
And also, I think, don't be afraid to mix English with your native language.
103
We live in a multilingual world.
104
People already mix English with their native languages.
105
So don't be afraid to start mixing English expressions in with your native language.
106
Encourage yourself in English.
107
Tell yourself that I can do this.
108
I got this.
109
Talking to yourself positively in English can help you boost your fluency,
110
make you more confident, make you feel better about the language, which in turn helps you stay more consistent,
111
which helps you build fluency.
112
It's a nice little self -fulfilling cycle.
113
In general, I think that it's not about studying daily.
114
English daily.
115
The important thing here is that small steps add up.
116
It's about the 1 % every day.
117
That's what will help you become fluent.
118
I think that true fluency comes from consistent exposure,
119
consistent engagement, not focused studying.
120
So keep these three tips in mind.
121
Turn your passive time into English time, switch small things to English,
122
and make English part of your inner world.
123
You don't have to aim for perfect discipline, aim for connection.
124
Let English live alongside you, with you.
125
It's not just something you do for a few hours every week.
126
Make it something you do consistently throughout your day.
127
So I'm curious, let me know what do you do with English?
128
What are your current English daily habits?
129
How do you bring English into your daily life?
130
If you don't currently, engage with English every day.
131
What are some ways that you could bring English into your daily life?
132
What does that look like for you?
133
Make sure to drop me a comment to let me know.
134
As always, thanks for being here, my friends.
135
Until next time, bye you
