1
me and my friend looked at each other like, what was that?
2
It was startling because it was totally quiet and then smashed.
3
What's up everyone?
4
Chào các bạn và chào mừng các bạn quay trở lại với tập nam của podcast Slow
5
and Clear của What's Up English.
6
My name is Carter and in this podcast,
7
we're going to talk about Halloween.
8
So in the beginning, you guys are going to learn the interesting history of Halloween.
9
Then we will talk about some activities that you do during Halloween.
10
And finally, at the end,
11
I'm going to tell you guys kind of like a ghost story.
12
But it's something that happened to me that I still remember to this day.
13
and it's kind of creepy.
14
Let's begin with the history of Halloween.
15
So maybe you know Halloween as the holiday where kids dress up in scary costumes
16
and they go door to door asking strangers for candy and that is called trick-or-treating, right?
17
But the way
18
that this started was roughly 2,000 years ago in what was known as the Celtic area
19
and now that area are countries like Ireland,
20
Scotland, Wales, countries in Great Britain now,
21
and also some countries in Europe.
22
So that area was pretty large,
23
and at that time, they had a holiday called Samhain.
24
And Samhain was on November 1st. And on this holiday,
25
people believed that ghosts would come back from the dead and roam around.
26
So what they did to stop the ghosts from coming into their homes was they would put things like bread
27
and wine at their doorstep.
28
so the ghosts would be happy with the offering and not go into their homes.
29
People would also wear masks when they were outside on the street because they believed that if they wore masks,
30
then the ghosts would think that they are ghosts too and leave them alone.
31
This day when the ghosts would roam around the streets used to be called Samhain.
32
And then they changed the name to All Hallows.
33
The day before All Hallows was All Hallows Eve.
34
And then that got shortened to Halloween.
35
To sum it up, Samhain was on November 1st. Samhain became All Hallows.
36
and then the day before All Hallows was All Hallows Eve because Eve means the day before,
37
like Christmas Eve.
38
And then All Hallows Eve became Halloween.
39
So that's how we have the name Halloween.
40
One thing that the poor people used to do at this time was they would go around begging for pastries
41
and if someone gave them the pastry,
42
in return, they would pray for that person.
43
They would pray for their ancestors,
44
or they would pray for their health.
45
They would pray for good weather,
46
just basically good things for whoever gave them these pastries.
47
This was called soling.
48
And there was another activity called guising.
49
And this one might sound a bit more familiar.
50
Guising was when young people,
51
kids, children, would dress up and then they would go around accepting food,
52
money, or wine, stuff like that,
53
in exchange for singing or saying a poem or telling a joke,
54
some form of entertainment.
55
And again, this was called guising.
56
But then much later on in America,
57
in the 19th century, these Irish and Scottish immigrants that came to America,
58
they brought back these old traditions.
59
And then in the 1950s,
60
around that time, those traditions became what is known today as trick-or-treating.
61
So these days, Halloween is a very big industry in America.
62
There was a statistic that Americans spent over $10 billion in 2021 for Halloween.
63
So it's a really big industry.
64
Now, as we can see,
65
it's spread to many, many countries around the world, including Vietnam.
66
Many kids like to dress up, get free candy, right?
67
Because everyone loves free candy.
68
So some things that people can do on Halloween are trick-or-treating, of course.
69
And trick-or-treating is when kids dress up as a monster or something scary.
70
and they go door to door or apartment to apartment and they say trick or treat and hopefully get a candy.
71
In the west
72
and also here we have Halloween parties where they have a theme they will dress up like a monster
73
or whatever and go to the party.
74
There are haunted houses and haunted means ghosts are there.
75
I remember when I was young,
76
I was maybe five or six years old,
77
and I was going trick-or-treating with my dad and my brother,
78
and there was a haunted house not too far from my house.
79
Some people in the West,
80
they put a lot of effort into creating something scary around their house or as a part of their house.
81
So in the West, we have garages where you park your car
82
and many people would turn those into a haunted house for kids.
83
And I remember I saw this haunted house and I was genuinely scared to go in because I was very young.
84
And the guy said, if you go into this haunted house,
85
I will give you a big candy bar.
86
Because most of the time they gave you small candy bars, right?
87
Small chocolate bars.
88
But he said, if I go in,
89
I'll get a big one like this it was tempting
90
but I couldn't do it
91
and I remember my brother he was three years older than me he did it
92
and he got a big chocolate bar
93
and I was thinking okay maybe next year I'll do it but this year I can't it's too scary
94
Other things that people do on Halloween are carving pumpkins.
95
And I think that's straightforward.
96
You have a pumpkin, you carve it into a face or anything that you want.
97
And then you can put a candle inside and it makes a really nice decoration.
98
Some places have hay rides.
99
And a hay ride is when you're at a farm.
100
And you sit on a tractor or a truck and it drives through the farm,
101
like the tall wheat fields.
102
So you cannot see very much, right?
103
And at nighttime, it's very creepy.
104
And there was one place in Canada called Saunders Farm.
105
And it was like a Halloween scary place.
106
On this hayride, you would go onto a truck and they would drive you through the hayfields.
107
So you are not in the truck,
108
but you are on the bed of the truck.
109
So you are still exposed to the outside.
110
And as they drive through the hayfield,
111
there's a guy with a fake chainsaw,
112
but he suddenly jumps out of the hayfield
113
and he starts chasing you on the truck with the chainsaw and it makes noise.
114
It's like, like it sounds,
115
it's a real chainsaw, but there's no chain on it.
116
So that is terrifying as a kid.
117
And it was like exciting, but also very scary.
118
Some other things people do are they watch horror movies,
119
like a horror movie marathon.
120
You can have bonfires tell scary stories around the bonfire.
121
Apple bobbing.
122
I didn't see it too often,
123
but yeah, people would grab an apple with their mouth from a barrel.
124
So yeah, those are a few things that people do on Halloween.
125
And finally, for the last part of this podcast,
126
I'm going to tell you guys a real,
127
true, creepy story that happened to me.
128
This is 100% true from what I saw and what I heard.
129
I'm not making anything up.
130
This was not at a time that was close to Halloween.
131
I can't remember exactly when it was.
132
I think it was in the winter in Canada.
133
and I was in my basement with my friend.
134
We were sitting next to each other.
135
In this room we were in,
136
there was another room not too far away,
137
but the door to that room was closed.
138
All of a sudden, we heard a very loud bang come from that room.
139
it sounded like something very heavy or large fell down
140
and smashed on the ground like it was loud
141
and as soon as that happened me
142
and my friend looked at each other like what was
143
that it was startling because it was totally quiet and then smash so the first thing that we thought was
144
something must have fallen down.
145
And let's go check on it.
146
So after that smash we got up we went to the room
147
that we heard the smash come from and everything was normal.
148
There was nothing on the floor,
149
nothing out of the ordinary,
150
just basically we were looking for anything because we were so convinced that something broke,
151
something big broke.
152
Hearing a bang that loud,
153
we thought we must be able to find something that made
154
that noise because it came from right there and it was so loud,
155
loud to the point where we looked at each other,
156
even thinking like, is someone breaking into the house.
157
It was really loud, but we could not find anything.
158
And we were pretty confused, to be honest.
159
But then I went back to the computer and then there was a pop-up on the screen.
160
And I remember this was maybe 10 years ago.
161
No, more than that.
162
Maybe about 12 years ago.
163
So this was with an old version of Windows,
164
and there was a pop-up on the screen with just the exclamation mark.
165
It was like the yellow triangle with the exclamation mark.
166
It was an Italian word.
167
That's all it was.
168
Just a pop-up with the Italian words on it.
169
I thought, that's weird.
170
So I googled what those words were and it turned out that it was a haunted house in Italy.
171
It was a house that was famous for having ghosts in it in Italy.
172
And I was like, what?
173
Why would that pop up on my computer?
174
It wasn't an advertisement.
175
It wasn't anything.
176
It had no purpose.
177
It just popped up and the only thing I could click was OK to close it.
178
It happened very shortly after that loud bang.
179
Another weird thing was the house we were in had been previously owned by Italian people because this area was very Italian.
180
There were many Italians that used to live there from the 50s.
181
so yeah it was very strange to this day I still don't know what
182
that bang was you know the my friend I was with he doesn't know um
183
so it's a mystery and I would say
184
that was the most paranormal thing
185
that has pretty much ever happened to me in my life because normally I'm not a person that believes in ghosts,
186
to be honest.
187
I'm pretty like logical and scientific.
188
And I think if there's no proof of something,
189
then I'm not going to believe it exists.
190
But that was one thing that I had no answer for.
191
It was very strange.
192
So that's it, guys.
193
That's it for this Halloween podcast.
194
I hope you enjoyed it.
195
I hope you learned some things about Halloween.
196
I hope you have a great Halloween.
197
Whatever you do, maybe you'll do nothing.
198
Maybe you will go out trick-or-treating.
199
Thank you so much for watching as usual.
