1
What's going on in the brain when you learn?
2
In order to learn anything, whether it's math, a foreign language, guitar, or how to dribble a basketball, you need to create and strengthen pathways in your brain.
3
Think about shooting a free throw.
4
Know that feeling when you've got it down and don't even have to think about it?
5
That's muscle memory.
6
Here's the thing.
7
Muscle memory lives in the brain, not the muscles.
8
Your brain controls everything your muscles do, and it does this by activating specific neural pathways for each and every movement.
9
These are functional pathways, neurons working together to achieve a goal.
10
Say you're learning how to shoot a free throw.
11
If it's your first time doing it, you don't yet have a pathway for that movement in your brain.
12
You need to create it.
13
Let's use an analogy to look at what's happening in the brain during this time.
14
When you're first learning, your brain is like a forest full of trees and dense foliage, with no clear pathway between point A and point B.
15
As you learn the mechanics of shooting a free throw, you create a trail through the forest.
16
Now you can shoot the free throw because you've created that pathway in your brain, but you probably don't make many shots because it's so new.
17
The pathway isn't very clear yet.
18
In order to improve your free throw, you need to refine and strengthen the free throw pathway in your brain.
19
The way you do that is through practice.
20
Practice gradually widens the trail through the trees, turning it into a dirt road between A and B.
21
You're starting to get pretty good now.
22
You're making more free throws than not.
23
You don't have to think about the mechanics as much.
24
That's because the pathway gets stronger after each practice rep.
25
And you've done a lot of reps.
26
With even more practice, the dirt road turns into a paved road connecting A and B, allowing information to be transmitted at a faster rate.
27
Now you're a 70% free throw shooter, and when you step up to the line, you don't even have to think about it.
28
Eventually, with enough practice, what started as a trail has become a full-blown highway.
29
Now you're a master, draining almost every free throw, and the movement is completely second nature.
30
Scientists call this plasticity, and it's your brain's innate ability to create and strengthen connections between neurons.
31
These connections are the path through the forest.
32
Halo Sport optimizes this process by temporarily increasing plasticity in the part of your brain
33
that controls movement so that your brain can create and strengthen these pathways faster than you would otherwise.
34
We call this hyper plasticity.
35
When you practice or train in this state you're able to write muscle memory more effectively, allowing you to get that much more out of your practice.
36
In terms of our analogy, Halo Sport helps you build superhighways of muscle memory at an accelerated rate.
37
It's not magic.
38
It's neuroscience.

Vocabulary and speaking notes for this lesson

Sentences worth repeating

Short, complete lines from the video that you can reuse in everyday conversation:

  • What's going on in the brain when you learn?
  • Say you're learning how to shoot a free throw.
  • You're starting to get pretty good now.
  • You're making more free throws than not.

Pronunciation to watch

The speaker uses 16 contractions and reduced forms, such as you're, don't, you've. Say them the short way, as you hear them.

  • The “th” sounds: pathway /ˈpæθˌweɪ/, strengthen /ˈstɹɛŋ(k)θən/
  • Long words — get the stress right: plasticity /ˌplæs.ˈtɪs.ɪ.ti/, analogy /əˈnæləd͡ʒi/, accelerate /ɪkˈsɛl.əˌɹeɪt/, temporarily /ˌtɛmpəˈɹɛɹəli/

How to practise with this video

  1. Listen to the whole video once without speaking and note the words you do not know.
  2. Start at 0.75× speed, shadow it sentence by sentence, then go back to normal speed once it feels easy.
  3. Record yourself and compare with the original, paying attention to words like pathway, strengthen, plasticity.
