How to pronounce /ɪ/

/ɪ/ is a short, relaxed vowel — the vowel in sit, ship, big and kid.

Mouth shape

• Open the mouth slightly more than for /iː/, but still fairly closed.
• Let the tongue sit a little lower and further back than for /iː/.
• Relax the lips and the tongue muscles completely — no smiling, no tension.

Length and tone

• Keep the sound very short and clipped — almost a flick.
• It sits acoustically between /iː/ and /e/ (the vowel in bed).

Common pitfalls

• Don't hold the sound; if you stretch it, it turns into /iː/ and changes the word (e.g. ship → sheep).
• Don't spread the lips into a smile — that's the /iː/ position.
• Don't replace it with /e/ either; the tongue should still be high, just relaxed.
