1
Within this tank lives a miniature world.
2
Animals will adapt, partnerships will form, and life must face Mother Nature herself.
3
The ocean is a dangerous place, but despite all odds, some animals have evolved to survive.
4
It transformed from a barren wasteland into a thriving ecosystem.
5
To understand the mysteries within, we must go back to day one, where it began with a tank,
6
some rock, and a whole lot of sand.
7
The water was initially cloudy, but as it began to clear, it revealed a hauntingly beautiful landscape.
8
It was entirely lifeless, so I introduced plankton, the bottom of the food chain.
9
Over the first 10 days, I did nothing but let them multiply.
10
Plankton may not look like much, but they are the foundation to all life on our planet.
11
So they're kind of a big deal.
12
On day 12, I introduced macroalgae.
13
They are the equivalent to an underwater plant.
14
They are covered in tiny snails and even the occasional starfish.
15
Together, the plankton and algae will fuel the fire of life in the aquarium, starting with hermit crabs.
16
Most of them explored the tank for pieces of debris and algae.
17
Some of them were quite large, while this guy is smaller than the head of a penny.
18
But this one had another idea.
19
He was on the hunt for a new shell.
20
Maybe this one will do.
21
He had to inspect it for size, shape, and quality.
22
And then he made the move.
23
A perfect fit.
24
We'll use this shell as a home for many months to come.
25
By day 20, the snail population began to boom.
26
They were taking over the rockwork, the glass, and even began climbing out of the aquarium.
27
Many of them harassed the hermit crabs and the glass was covered in eggs.
28
I had to stop them.
29
It was time to introduce a snail predator.
30
Meet the pistol shrimp, an expert snail hunter.
31
I added him into the tank, but there is a catch.
32
He is completely blind, and the hermit crabs may try to eat him.
33
He was outnumbered 10 to 1.
34
He needed protection and that is why he is not alone.
35
These are gobi fish.
36
They have incredible eyesight and will protect him with their lives.
37
In return, the shrimp will build them a home.
38
But after adding them into the tank, they seem to have all vanished.
39
But underground, they were building a fortress.
40
They were safe.
41
They were home.
42
Meanwhile, above ground, the rock was looking barren and empty.
43
It was time to introduce coral.
44
They may just look like colorful rock, but with time, they begin to emerge.
45
Coral serves as a refuge to life on the reef, and this jewel coral is no different.
46
It is covered in holes that are home to a very special kind of worm.
47
Christmas tree worms.
48
They use colorful feathers to catch food passing by.
49
But when they get scared, they disappear right back into the coral.
50
I even added a few fish who will use the coral as a hunting ground and hideout.
51
But in the evening, many of the coral began to close.
52
The fish went into hiding, and night finally fell.
53
The tank may look empty so I got a dead anchovy.
54
This fish has an irresistible smell that fills the aquarium.
55
Zombie snails.
56
They are attracted to the smell of blood.
57
Pretty soon the anchovy was completely surrounded.
58
Even the hermit crabs joined in.
59
All this commotion attracted something even bigger.
60
A leopard snail.
61
He is a snail eating snail, and the top predator in these waters.
62
But in this case, he was just after the anchovy.
63
He uses a retractable mouth to puncture the fish's skin.
64
After a few hours, it was like nothing ever happened.
65
By day 40, life was in full swing.
66
The pistol shrimp spent all day digging out their burrow, while the gobies stood guard.
67
Meanwhile, the algae was growing rapidly.
68
It was outgrowing the tank and taking over the rockwork.
69
That is why I introduced a sea urchin.
70
He will spend his whole life grazing on algae and keeping it at bay.
71
But he was stopped in his tracks by a hermit crab.
72
This hermit crab became a little too curious and went for a ride.
73
Still, something in the aquarium was a little bit off.
74
All of the coral began to close and animals were taking shelter.
75
They were doing so for good reason.
76
I was about to simulate a hurricane.
77
The storm left behind a dust cloud.
78
The water column was filled with dirt and debris, but all of this debris was going to be food for sponges.
79
They use hundreds of holes on their body to filter out the water.
80
But this sponge is not like the rest.
81
It began to move.
82
That's because it is a sponge crab.
83
He is in disguise.
84
Unlike the sponges, he will not help filter the water.
85
It was still cloudy and full of debris.
86
That is why I added Feather Duster Worms.
87
They use these feathers on their head to filter and clean the water.
88
But if they sense danger, they can vanish.
89
By day 72, the reef had become a refuge for many forms of life.
90
Every animal has its own role to play, and every animal has its own story to tell.
91
For example, this sea slug was on a mission.
92
I started with three of them and now she is the last of her kind.
93
But it was not her fate to die alone.
94
She climbed to the top of the aquarium where she began to land.
95
She created a spiral of hundreds and hundreds of eggs in hopes of raising the next generation.
96
Meanwhile, I decided to introduce an anemone.
97
It is huge, it is destructive, it is a lot like my mother-in-law.
98
Anemones are deceptively beautiful.
99
Each tentacle packs a lethal sting that it uses to hunt.
100
Watch what happens if I give it a fish.
101
It pulls the fish to its mouth where it will be swallowed whole.
102
In a few hours, there will be nothing left but a pile of bones.
103
The other fish must be extremely careful or they will become a meal as well.
104
But there is a fish that is immune to the deadly stiff.
105
Meet the clownfish.
106
They have a special slime coat on their skin to protect them from the anemone.
107
Within seconds of adding them in, they form an unbreakable bond.
108
The anemone protects the clownfish, and in return, the clownfish will feed and keep it clean.
109
During the day, the tank seems like a peaceful paradise.
110
But as day sets to night, then all begins to change.
111
All the fish are hiding and for good reason.
112
I added in some dead shrimp to bring out the nightlife.
113
The snails emerged for their ritual hunt and so did something new.
114
Some animals are just better left a mystery.
115
On day 94, the reef was ready for a new predator.
116
Meet the Hawkfish.
117
He is an ambush predator.
118
After adding him into the tank, he began the hunt.
119
That is enough food for the day.
120
Now as the sun began to set, the coral put on a show.
121
They light up the night to attract plankton.
122
There was a feeding frenzy.
123
They were not the only ones to glow.
124
The plankton do as well.
125
Plankton do as well.
126
It is one of the most breathtaking displays on our planet,
127
and it made me realize that coral reefs in the wild must be even more beautiful. Or so I thought.
128
Over half our coral reefs are now nothing more than a graveyard.
129
The ones that we still have left are fading into memory.
130
But it is not the end.
131
There is still hope.
132
And thanks to your support, I am donating $10,000 to the Coral Restoration Foundation.

Step-by-Step Shadowing Guide: Master Pronunciation & Flow

The shadowing technique (or "shadow speak") is a fantastic way to improve your English pronunciation and fluency. Here’s how to use this video:

  1. Watch once for context: Focus on the story—notice how the speaker’s tone changes (excited when introducing clownfish, serious when talking about coral loss).
  2. Listen and repeat 10-second clips: Pause after short phrases (like "the water was initially cloudy but as it began to clear") and repeat immediately. Copy the rhythm and stress (e.g., "HAUNTingly BEAUtiful landSCAPE").
  3. Focus on tricky words: Words like "plankton," "anemone," and "macroalgae" can be tough. Break them into syllables (an-EM-o-nee) and practice until they feel natural.
  4. Imitate the energy: The speaker uses humor ("it is a lot like my mother-in-law") and wonder ("one of the most breathtaking displays"). Copying this emotion will make your English sound more natural.

With practice, you’ll not only learn new words but also how to speak English with confidence. So hit play, dive in, and let this ocean adventure boost your english speaking practice—one shadowed phrase at a time!
