1
Hello, I'm Rebecca Rose and I thought today I would narrate for you a full short story.
2
Here's the thing, this is a story that I wrote myself.
3
Having been an avid consumer of fairy tales my whole life, it would make sense that this is what would come out of me.
4
So, sit back, relax, and get ready to listen to me narrate this short story, The Girl with the Red Balloon.
5
There once lived a girl.
6
A very odd sort of girl, with bright eyes and a heart-shaped face.
7
Her hair was short and bundled around her head in tight curls.
8
She laughed easily and cried never.
9
She was not especially tall or especially pretty, but she carried a fierce glow of life in her small body that seemed to burn into her very gaze.
10
Perhaps most peculiar of all, was that she kept tied around her wrist a string.
11
And this string was attached to a red balloon.
12
The girl carried this red balloon with her wherever she went, which was many places.
13
Perhaps the most accurate phrase would be, the balloon carried the girl wherever it went, rather than the other way around.
14
With her red balloon, the girl could fly through the air, freer than a cloud.
15
She traveled far and wide, high and low and beyond, and she saw many wonderful things with her bright laughing eyes.
16
Now in a small, sleepy, kind town lived a young boy.
17
He lived a small, sleepy, kind life, this gentle and brave young boy.
18
One day, he saw something gleaming at the top of a very tall tree on the edge of the road
19
that led to the lake where he went fishing every morning.
20
He squinted up into the tangle of branches and leaves, but he could not see clearly what the thing was.
21
It seemed to be a red dot, as though a giant hand had painted a little rose on the very tippy top of the green tree.
22
The boy, being as courageous as he was kind, decided to climb to the top of the tree as tall as it was, to see what this red spot could be.
23
He grasped the branches and hoisted himself up, his legs pushing against the bark as he raised his body higher and higher above the ground.
24
His hands were scraped and dirty, but his face was clear with curiosity.
25
As he reached the perilous top, he saw that the red spot was in fact a red balloon.
26
How strange, he said out loud, looking at the balloon that was trapped between the very topmost branches.
27
It's not strange at all, came a cheerful voice.
28
The boy nearly lost his grip on the thin branch he
29
was grasping as he turned his head in shock towards the voice.
30
He saw a girl, sitting easily on a very slender branch, her legs crossed.
31
It's not strange, she repeated, after meeting his eyes with her own bright ones.
32
After all, if you are flying in this part of the sky, it's no wonder a great tree would be the thing that catches my balloon.
33
Nothing else is so tall after all.
34
The boy stared at her.
35
He had never seen such eyes as hers.
36
The boy noticed that the balloon was attached to a longest string, which was tied firmly around her wrist.
37
Yes, of course, he said.
38
He cautiously climbed a bit higher, to where the balloon was bobbing, trapped beneath the green leaves.
39
Careful not to pop the delicate balloon, he unwound the string from the branches and handed it back to the girl, who was watching him.
40
Thank you, she said graciously, taking the balloon back.
41
They looked at each other for a moment.
42
Would you.. like something to drink?
43
The boy offered courteously.
44
It seemed the right question for this unusual occasion.
45
Nothing brings two strangers together like an ice drink after a good rousing climb to the top of a very tall tree.
46
The girl smiled.
47
Well, it's been a while since I've had some hot chocolate, she said.
48
It's very hard to find good hot chocolate when so high off the ground.
49
After this statement, the boy wondered if the girl actually lived in the tree.
50
he nodded and offered a hand to help her down.
51
She took it without a word, and they began the winding descent.
52
They reached the ground with little difficulty, the girl somehow holding her balloon under one arm while using her other to climb down.
53
The boy held one of her hands with his own, and together they managed.
54
The boy noticed, though, as he stepped back on the firm ground with his two feet.
55
The girl's feet hovered in the air and were held aloft by her red balloon.
56
Had he not been holding her hand, he was sure that she would have merely floated away.
57
She looked down at him.
58
She gave a smile and no explanation.
59
Holding her hand firmly, the boy led the way to his little house where the
60
girl sat on a wooden beam on the low ceiling as he made some tea.
61
This was the beginning of their friendship.
62
Days went by, and the girls still did not leave.
63
The boy was quite relieved every morning to see her eyes as she smiled at him.
64
Soon, she tied her string to his wrist as well, and wherever he went, she floated along.
65
They were quite happy, living a small, simple, sleepy life together.
66
The boy was sure he had never felt so full before.
67
Her eyes became his sun in the day and his stars in the evening.
68
And he knew that he loved her with all the strength of his kind, brave heart.
69
But as time slipped away in its mysterious and unstoppable stream, the boy began to notice that the girl with the red balloon began to look sadder and more drawn.
70
She no longer dreamily told him stories about incredible storms she had survived
71
or the glorious snow-capped mountain tops she had skimmed with her toes.
72
He tried his best to cheer her up, reading poetry and more cups of his best hot chocolate, flowers that he grew himself in their small garden,
73
and silly songs that he wrote in his head.
74
She smiled at everything.
75
But her eyes were less luminous, and the boy felt it too, and the sun strangely seemed to set.
76
The red balloon, which remained ever tied between their wrists, began to drop, and the string hung limply between them.
77
Secretly, the boy felt happy that she began to come nearer to the ground every day, because it meant she was getting nearer to him in his earthbound life.
78
Yet it was a guilty and selfish happiness.
79
It was a happiness he was ashamed of.
80
And at the same time he felt a deep sadness to
81
see his bridegirl with the red balloon lose her color in life that was once a part of her.
82
One morning as the day dawned golden and clear, a terrible thing happened.
83
The balloon had shrunk so much it could just hardly bear the girl's weight, and her feet touched the ground for the first time.
84
Her shocked and empty expression shook the boy like an electric bolt, and he knew he could no longer keep her.
85
He spoke first.
86
I love you, he said to the girl.
87
She looked up at him, the light in her eyes gleaming I love you and I want you in my life.
88
But I can see that it is not enough and
89
that your life is shrinking away and your balloon is becoming smaller every day.
90
More than anything, he swallowed hard.
91
A lump had grown in his throat and his courage, which had always seemed so sure and bold, shook for a moment.
92
More than anything, I want you to be happy.
93
Pick me, he thought fervently.
94
Pick me, I promise I can make you happy.
95
But he spoke not a word as he watched her face.
96
For the first time in a very long time, the girl smiled a true smile.
97
Her smile seemed to light a candle inside of her, and she grew radiant and buoyant.
98
The boy saw that in the moment of her true joy, her balloon had grown.
99
It expanded twice in size, stretching out and up into the great blue sky.
100
She kissed him once on the lips, and before he could change her mind, she untied the string from his wrist.
101
And in one pain-filled moment, before he could grab her again, she slipped from his grasp and was lifted away suddenly into the unchanging sky.
102
The boy watched as her figure became smaller and smaller, her eyes looking back at him with such fierce joy and perhaps a little bit of regret.
103
And he knew that to love her was to let her be as she was.
104
Lonely, defiant, and free, his little girl rose away, carrying only the weight of his love,
105
which with its unknowable power now lifted her to greater heights.
106
He was left alone in his simple, sleepy, sweet life that had not changed at all, and had suddenly become entirely different.
107
But you know the story is not entirely sad.
108
For as he grew older he met another girl who became his partner and wife, another kind and brave soul just like him.
109
And he grew to become content with the way things were. But sometimes.
110
He looked up at the sky and every so often he imagined he could see a red balloon floating high up there, daring the edges of the sky.
111
And he was happy and sad, all at once.
112
The end.
