1
I don't know if I'm working it right now.
2
It's hard to know what to say.
3
I wrote this speech and there's teleprompters and I got papers.
4
I don't know what to use.
5
And in truth, I was just trying to memorize Anita's speech
6
because it was so beautiful that you give me hope thank you Jennifer for
7
that beautiful introduction you're an inspiration to
8
so many thank you not only for everything you continually do for women
9
but for the force of nature you've been for
10
so many all over the world I think about me and my best friend who's here tonight right there
11
I've known her since I was four years old beautiful adopted woman from Korea
12
and how throughout high school we danced and we sang imitating Jennifer
13
imitating you while we strengthened our bond her name is Bo
14
and wearing white bandanas and hoop earrings draped over caramel colored hair you brought us
15
so much joy where are you you brought us so much joy on the train I thought about you
16
and how the fuck I was gonna get off that train.
17
She loved you so much, we even gave her the nickname, J-Bo.
18
No, for real.
19
Like we called her that all the time.
20
There is not a doubt in my mind that you will be loved forever as the powerhouse of a performer
21
and woman that you are.
22
Thank you for making so many memories for me and my friends that I will cherish forever in my heart.
23
Thank you so much.
24
I never in my wildest dreams thought that my life would become what it has,
25
but more so to be honored this evening purely for being a woman.
26
It's beyond what I could have imagined.
27
I guess I didn't see it happening in my lifetime.
28
I am immensely privileged to be in the company of so many powerful women who have changed so many people's lives.
29
I am so humbled to be standing hand in hand with every one of you today.
30
I spent a lot of time thinking about what I wanted to say tonight because of all of you,
31
because you inspire me.
32
How does one rise to such an occasion when maybe you don't feel that inside?
33
How does one accept where life has brought them and what it all means?
34
As I tried on dress
35
after dress today getting ready for this event one
36
tight corset after another one heel after another a diamond of feather thousands of beaded fabrics and the most
37
beautiful silks in the world.
38
To be honest, I felt sick to my stomach and I asked myself,
39
what does it really mean to be a woman in Hollywood?
40
We are not just objects to entertain the world.
41
We are not simply images to bring smiles or grimaces to people's faces.
42
We are not members of a giant beauty pageant meant to be pit against one another for the pleasures of the public.
43
We women in Hollywood, we are voices.
44
We have deep thoughts and ideas and beliefs and values about the world.
45
And we have the power to speak and be heard and fight back when we are silenced.
46
So after trying on 10 or so dresses,
47
with a sad feeling in my heart that all that would matter was what I wore to this red carpet,
48
I saw an oversized Marc Jacobs suit buried quietly in the corner.
49
I put it on to a resounding view of eyes glaring at me in confusion.
50
But the Redarte was so beautiful, one said.
51
But the Raph Simmons for Calvin Klein was so stunning on you, said another.
52
But what about the Brandon Maxwell?
53
What about the Dior?
54
Lots of questions.
55
They were all dresses.
56
This was an oversized men's suit made for a woman.
57
not a gown.
58
And then I began to cry.
59
In this suit, I felt like me today.
60
In this suit, I felt the truth of who I am well up in my gut.
61
And then wondering what I wanted to say tonight became very clear to me.
62
As a sexual assault survivor by someone in the entertainment industry,
63
As a woman who is still not brave enough to say his name,
64
as a woman who lives with chronic pain as a woman
65
who was conditioned at a very young age to listen to
66
what men told me to do I decided today I wanted to take the power back today I wear the pants
67
Today I wear the suit.
68
In an age when I can barely watch the news, aghast at the unjust men and some women,
69
quite frankly, that I see running this country,
70
I had a revelation that I had to be empowered to be myself today more than ever,
71
to resist the standards of Hollywood,
72
whatever that means, to resist the standards of dressing to impress,
73
but to use what really matters, my voice.
74
After I was assaulted, when I was 19, I changed forever.
75
Part of me shut down for many years.
76
I didn't tell anyone.
77
I avoided it myself and felt shame even still today,
78
standing in front of you.
79
I feel shame for what happened to me.
80
I still have days where I feel like it was my fault.
81
After I shared what happened to me with very powerful men in this industry, nobody helped me.
82
No one offered me guidance or a helping hand to lead me to a place where I felt justice.
83
They didn't even point me in the direction of the mental health assistance I was in dire need of.
84
Those men hid because they were afraid of losing their power.
85
And because they hid, I began to hide.
86
I hid for a long time.
87
Until I started to feel physical pain.
88
Then I had to go to the doctor.
89
Because I didn't know what was wrong with me.
90
And then I was diagnosed with PTSD and fibromyalgia,
91
which many people don't think is even real, and I don't even know what the fuck to say about that.
92
But I'll tell you what it is.
93
It's a syndrome
94
that is essentially a cyclone of many
95
different conditions depending on person inducing a stress-induced pain.
96
And I really wish my friend Lena Dunham was here tonight
97
because I think she could probably articulate this much better than me.
98
And I hope we can all agree that she's a remarkable woman.
99
Depression, anxiety, eating disorders, trauma.
100
These are just a few examples of the forces that can lead to this tornado of pain.
101
So what I would like to say in this room of powerful women
102
and men today is let's work together to beckon the world towards kindness towards kindness.
103
I'm fortunate enough now to have the resources to help me.
104
But for many the resources either don't exist or people don't have the ability to pay for or access them.
105
I want to see mental health become a global priority.
106
We might not be able
107
or we're not able actually to control all of the challenges and the tragedies that life throws our way.
108
But we can work together.
109
This room, and even wider,
110
can work together to heal each other.
111
And we can also try to find the strength in the best way
112
that we can to ask for help if we need it.
113
One in four people in the world suffer from mental illness.
114
300 million people suffer from depression.
115
60 million people live with bipolar affective disorder.
116
23 million people are stricken with schizophrenia.
117
And 800,000 people die every year from suicide.
118
In low and middle income countries,
119
between 76 and 85% of people with mental disorders receive no treatment at all.
120
In high-income countries between 35 and 50 percent of people are in the same situation.
121
The people in this room and the people that you have in your network have the power to turn
122
kindness into plutonium and change the world.
123
For both children and adults to provide for a better future
124
and make up in whatever small way that we can.
125
microscopic maybe, for the pain those have suffered in the past.
126
And if anyone is compelled to do so, please join me and my mother, Cynthia.
127
We're the founders of the Born This Way Foundation to empower youth, to inspire a kinder and braver world.
128
We want kids to learn about mental health and the importance of kindness at a very young age.
129
And it is my personal dream that there would be a mental health expert,
130
teacher, or therapist in every school in this nation,
131
and hopefully one day around the world.
132
Let's lift our voices.
133
I know we are, but let's get louder.
134
And not just as women, but as humans.
135
And see that there are great men in the world.
136
and ask them to hold our hands.
137
For justice, that our voices be heard, whatever our story may be,
138
for an equal standing that we will fight for justice for women and men and those with other sexual identities.
139
For me, this is what it means to be a woman in Hollywood.
140
It means I have a platform.
141
I have a chance to make a change.
142
I pray we listen and believe and pay closer attention to those around us,
143
to those in need.
144
I'm sorry, I preach a lot, so you're going to have to bear with me. Be a helping hand.
145
Be a force for change.
146
Thank you, Nina Garcia.
147
Thank you, Steven Gann.
148
I was an outcast and you believed in me and I wouldn't be here without you.
149
Thank you, Al.
150
Thank you, all the loved ones in my life, Bobby.
151
I love you.
152
Everybody at table five.
153
My fiance, Christian.
154
All the loved ones in my life who take care of me every day. and Ryan Murphy.
155
Thanks for giving me my first leading role.
156
You know that golden gold belongs to you, man.
157
thank you to all of you everybody in this room who has supported me
158
and having a voice
159
and knowing i have something inside me to give that's more
160
important than any stereotype about hollywood i have my heart to give to you
161
and I want you to have all of it.
162
Thank you for inspiring me.
163
I can't say enough about you.
164
Listening to you speak tonight gave me hope when I have trouble sleeping because I'm afraid.
165
When I walk out in the world and I'm trembling inside, it's women like you, Anita, that make me feel strong.
166
Come on.
167
Be kind to yourselves, and be kind to each other.
168
And to the designers that sent me all those beautiful dresses, thank you too.
169
It taught me something that I needed to learn again today. and to quote myself
170
if there's one thing you take away from me being here tonight now it's breed
171
compassion.
172
Amen.
173
Fashion.
