1
Normally, Americans and Italians come up with the coolest car names.
2
Britain's best ever was that, the Jensen Interceptor.
3
And 60 years on, it's back.
4
So let's have a good look around it.
5
Coming up, I'll explain this ludicrous rear wing.
6
We'll hear what lurks under this enormous bonnet.
7
And what is a Jensen Interceptor?
8
And why is it worth reviving?
9
Plus, we'll show you what the road legal versions will look like.
10
Right, let's clear up some of the obvious questions, like, why does it look so similar to a Ford Mustang GTD?
11
It is uncanny, isn't it?
12
But this is nothing to do with Ford.
13
The engine, in fact, is distantly related to a V8 from General Motors, but it's now a 6.8-litre,
14
making upwards of 960 brake horsepower.
15
Next question, who's Jensen?
16
Not a side hustle from Formula One champ Jensen Button.
17
This is Jensen with an E.
18
And amazingly, these days, not a Restomod based on 60-year-old foundations.
19
The Jensen Interceptor GTX is an all-new car.
20
But the company that's going to make it, Jensen International, is in the Restomod business.
21
Jensen International has been the official restorer of the Interceptor since 2007 and what they do is take this 1960s Super GT,
22
restore it to better than new condition and then give you your choice of updated modern V8 under the bonnet
23
but this isn't like the Singer treatment where you effectively have modern composite panels
24
and Formula One technology cosplaying as a classic car
25
This is fundamentally an original Interceptor and that shows up in how this old timer drives.
26
I had a go in one of these a couple of years ago and yeah, you can feel the body has some flex in it.
27
You can feel the whole thing shudder and rock
28
when you blip the throttle and in the corners it leans over like cars used to.
29
That's because Jensen International isn't trying to turn this classic into a BMW M5 chaser.
30
It's trying to retain all the charm from the original but make it reliable.
31
Not that it's slow.
32
There's the standard, restored Interceptor with original engine,
33
or an Interceptor S, or the supercharged Interceptor R with up to 650bhp.
34
These reborn classics can do 0-60 in under 5 seconds and go on to top speeds over 165 mph.
35
So, Jensen International made a business of restoring the classic Interceptor for about £300,000 each,
36
depending on your spec, but recently, despite the RestoMod craze, demand for that has slowed.
37
So that got them thinking, what if we started again with a clean slate, brand new ideas and brought back the Interceptor for the 2020s?
38
Hence the Interceptor GTX, which is not road legal.
39
As you have probably worked out with the window cut out, the enormous aero package, this is track only.
40
Now I was disappointed when I found that out because I thought, well I want to take this continent crossing.
41
Why has it become another millionaire's track day toy?
42
But it hasn't necessarily.
43
What the idea is here is to build a car to do the hard yards, to do the prototype testing and from that,
44
from those lessons from the white-hot crucible of track engineering then they will derive a car like the original
45
that can cross continents on the road.
46
Jensen International promises the GTX is just the start.
47
It's an extreme concept car that will also work as a testbed for what comes next.
48
In fact they're planning two road legal versions, an Interceptor GT that's relaxed and refined
49
and a road legal version of the GTX called the Interceptor GTR to hunt Panamera turbos and AMGs.
50
So come on let's check out the details.
51
Okay basics, front engine, rear wheel drive, 80% of this bodywork will carry over to the production road car version,
52
hopefully that includes these enormous aero tunnels in the bonnet.
53
You'd imagine the whole thing's made out of carbon fibre but actually only the aero package is.
54
The rest of this lovely bodywork has been done by Coventry Metalcraft because, well, British craftsmanship.
55
They normally spend their days doing not just coach built cars
56
but bespoke furniture and perhaps a coffee table or maybe a park bench inspire this enormous rear wing.
57
This is part of the carbon aero package and it's extreme.
58
This plus the ankle slicing front splitter,
59
rear diffuser and the flat floor generate a claimed 350 kilos of downforce.
60
Now in the mad current world of car aero that's a relatively modest claim.
61
A GT3 RS says it makes 860 odd kilos of downforce
62
but in the world of car manufacturer downforce one-upmanship normally the
63
more modest your claim is the closer it is to the truth.
64
So what about the powertrain?
65
This V8 was born by General Motors but it has been thoroughly gone over by late model engines in Houston,
66
Texas who threw 80% of it in the trash and came up with lots of forged motorsport style bits and pieces.
67
Then they garnished it with a 2.65 litre supercharger
68
and the result of that is
69
while for testing purposes they're making do with 960 brake horsepower
70
with different power maps they could push this power plant to 1200 bhp with 1100 ft-lbs of torque.
71
It is a monster and yet it's so compact
72
and the GTX's bonnet is so long that they've shoved it right back behind the axle line to make the car front, mid-engined and nicely balanced.
73
All that power will be sent down a carbon fibre prop shaft to a rear-mounted transaxle gearbox.
74
At the moment it's a six-speed sequential but could the road car bow to this analog manual trend?
75
You'll have the option, that's the point of this prototype.
76
Figure out what works and what breaks and also what the customers are asking for.
77
So if enough of them say I want an H-pattern stick shift it's perfectly possible.
78
Underneath there's more top shelf race car stuff, double wishbone suspension front and rear,
79
AP Racing brakes which are steel not ceramic,
80
there's forged Vossom wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport tyres and three-way adjustable nitron dampers.
81
Inside it's nothing like a traditional Jensen is it really unless
82
you count having a big bank of chunky capital letter labeled switches within easy reach
83
but of course this is meant to be a hard-working prototype not to be a luxury concord lawn award winner
84
so it doesn't matter that we've just got big slabs of unpainted carbon fiber
85
and bare rather nice i have to say metal work going
86
on it does feel pure motorsport i mean look we've got
87
your fia approved safety cage we've got adjustable dials on the steering wheel for the supercharger boost
88
and the abs i can adjust my brake bias down here
89
and if I pull this toggle switch out
90
and actually wake it up electronically then you'll see we've got
91
a very functional very motorsport race car style info display ahead of me the only concessions to anything really old school are
92
that besides the paddle shifters behind the steering wheel I could
93
choose to shift on the sequential lever here I've got some rather nice stitching down here on my armrest
94
and I've got these Porsche style fabric door releases.
95
I mean, yeah, you could argue, is it a shame that there's not more of a visual link to the original Interceptor, but that will hopefully come later.
96
And the guys behind this project, you know, they make a pretty sanguine point that the collectors, the people who were hot for the original Interceptor, that car is now 60 years old.
97
Those collectors aren't getting any younger.
98
You're not going to stay in business very long if you just keep rehashing the same old ideas.
99
So of all the AWOL forgotten classics of the 60s and the 70s, and let's face it, most of them are British, why bring back Jensen?
100
Besides the ice-cool name and the ahead of its time fastback looks, the Interceptor was one of the world's fastest four-seaters.
101
Now, this is a later Interceptor with the 280 horsepower 7.2 litre V8 that's 440 cubic inches
102
but when the Interceptor launched back in 66 it had a 6.3 litre V8
103
and it would do almost 140 miles an hour.
104
Might not sound like much today I grant you
105
but you have to remember that the fastest car in the world at
106
that time was the Lamborghini Miura and it could do 167 miles an hour
107
but it couldn't do it with four people on board.
108
Jensen's similar FF introduced world firsts like anti-lock brakes and four-wheel drive in a road-focused performance car way before the Audi Quattro.
109
It was basically the Audi RS7 or Porsche Taycan Turbo of the 1960s,
110
but the oil crisis kicked V8 Cruisers in the nuts.
111
Jensen went bust by the mid-70s, leaving the Germans to dominate the world of super saloons.
112
So it's about time there was an Anglo-American fight back.
113
Well, let's not get ahead of ourselves.
114
Jenson knows it's bitten off an almighty project here.
115
After all, making modern fast cars is heartbreakingly expensive, bloody hard work and lawmakers would rather you didn't bother.
116
But if they can give us an elegant road-going version of this car,
117
just as the BMW M5 goes hybrid and heavy and AMG loses its mind,
118
mind, then the coolest name in ultra-fast four-seaters could be back for a new generation.

Bạn đang luyện tập phát âm tiếng Anh với video "This Is A New 960hp V8 British Muscle Car!
