The roots of a plant suck up water and nutrients from the soil.

The stem or trunk holds up the plant and carries water and nutrients to the rest of the plant.

The leaves catch sunlight which the plant needs to make food.

Speaking of food, plants have a special way of making their own food.

It's called photosynthesis.

During photosynthesis, plants use sunlight, water and a gas called carbon dioxide to make sugar.

This sugar is the food that gives plants energy to grow.

So whether they're providing shade, making oxygen or just looking beautiful, plants are very important for life on Earth.
