I'm trained as a geriatrician, an internal medicine physician.

I spend my time managing acute patients, screening them for emergency interventions for stroke, both hemorrhagic strokes and ischemic stroke.

So these are strokes caused by blockage of an artery or burst blood vessel.

And we now have new treatments to remove the clot or dissolve the clot if they have an ischemic type of stroke.

And they have been shown to really improve the prognosis of these patients.

I find that the brain is a fascinating organ.

You only have one and you can't replace it.

And it controls your whole body and controls your mind.

And the thing about the brain is that when the blood supply is interrupted, it gives you a stroke and that's what a stroke is.

And a stroke can cause someone to go from totally independent to totally disabled in a matter of seconds.

And the reason why I like stroke is because we have interventions to make people better.

In the old days, people used to suffer the consequences of stroke and they tend to permanently disable someone.

But now, with these new interventions, stroke is potentially curable.

And I've seen people who've had an acute stroke who've had the emergency intervention and they come in completely paralysed, unable to walk and talk and see and they walk home two or three days later.

So that really excites me and my colleagues.

I've been a stroke doctor for more than 23 years and so what I've come to realise is

It's important to empower the patient to take full control of how they want to reshape their life and reducing the risk of another stroke.

And to do that, the patient needs to make smart choices.

And my job is to help them through the process of making these smart choices.
