1
Hi, good evening everyone.
2
Welcome back to the Atomic Podcast, where I believe a healthy life starts with a healthy mind.
3
So if you are on the quest to improve your sleep quality, boost your positivity, and enhance your English skill, you are in the right place.
4
So what is the mindset for you today?
5
Actually, this episode is extremely special.
6
As you can see, I'm speaking to you right now in front of the camera
7
and I will try to speak English with the basic language and with my slow speed.
8
So if you are a beginner level or even intermediate or advanced level, you can still take advantage of this episode.
9
Before I even tell you what is the topic of our conversation today.
10
I would love to ask you a few questions.
11
Do you think learning English is hard?
12
Have you ever felt like giving up after a few days of trying when you have a very
13
detailed plan for learning English but then after a few days or even a few months you don't know
14
where to keep going, you don't know how to stay consistent, and then you end up giving up.
15
Don't worry, if you see yourself in this situation, you are not alone.
16
Because I was there too, and a lot of my students were experiencing the same process that you're going through right now.
17
You know, learning English can be both exciting and challenging.
18
And the point here is that when When we start learning something new at first,
19
it's going to be very interesting because it is new for sure, you still have a lot to explore.
20
Just like when you are in a relationship for the first few months, you have a lot to talk about.
21
But after that, maybe one or two years when you sit with each other,
22
you don't have any to talk about and you start getting bored about the relationship like English.
23
When you first learning English, you know a lot of tips and you will see your very quick improvement about your pronunciation,
24
some of the very solid foundation that you can see in your improvement.
25
But after a few months where you get to a specific level
26
and when it gets harder like
27
when you have to go with some of the advanced grammar points
28
or where you have to speak and
29
when you have to interact with some of the uncommon topics
30
and you feel like giving up
31
because it is hard you don't have any motivation to keep going
32
so that is why you have to set a mindset for yourself
33
that learning English is challenging
34
but then you have to make this journey as interesting as
35
possible you need a clear plan where you take the fast improvement
36
and where you slow down a little bit in order to reflect on your self-improvement
37
and your learning progress and in order to put more effort
38
and that is where you need to tell yourself that all right it is hard but But then, most of the people give up, but not me.
39
I'm gonna keep going, I'm gonna keep trying until I get to the next level, because I'm not the rest of the world.
40
So in order to help you make this journey as fun and interesting as possible, I have this episode for you,
41
episode number 12, some of the tips to help you feel more confident
42
in learning English especially when you don't have anybody to practice with when you have to learn English alone at home.
43
So stick around because this episode is definitely for you and you'll get a lot of takeaways and tips from this episode.
44
You'll find it enjoyable for sure.
45
So first of all, let me just talk about the most common mistakes that people make in terms of learning English.
46
That is where people focus more on the inputs and they forget about the importance of the outputs.
47
So the fastest way to speak English fluently is not just by sitting there learning grammar
48
or vocabulary or spending hours watching English videos and listening to English podcast or just reading thousands of pages of English books.
49
The fastest way to speak English is to speak out.
50
All right, that is to balance your input and your output.
51
So what's the point of trying to put in a lot of grammar, vocabulary, and when it's time to practice,
52
you are afraid to speak out because you may think
53
that you make a lot of mistakes
54
and people will judge you you will use the wrong words
55
and wrong grammar don't worry think about
56
that you will get out what you put in now I've known a lot of my friends
57
and students who don't have great memories for the grammar
58
or vocabulary they don't have a perfect accent they're not naturally talented
59
or gifted but they do have one thing in common
60
which is the fearless attitude to just speak I was there
61
too I've made a lot of mistakes actually I did say the wrong things I used the wrong grammar
62
and sometimes people didn't understand me because I couldn't really find the word to speak
63
but then at the end of the day you are learning
64
and growing and remember that every time that you make mistakes
65
and you corrected yourself you're getting closer to your final goal
66
that is the point if you keep it for yourself
67
and then no one will know
68
and then you never know about your mistakes as well
69
so people ask me what is the magic pill
70
that i have in order to speak english fluently i would say just speak you know this is something
71
that i've been telling people i got zero background in english actually i graduated from the Danang University of Economics
72
and my major was hospitality management so I should be a tour guide.
73
Actually I was working as the tour guide for the first few years as a part-time job.
74
Back then English was my biggest fear.
75
I didn't dare to speak out.
76
I still remember
77
when I was in an English class I was joining the pre-ILS group of my friends and my teacher told me that,
78
Hey Tommy, if you don't work harder, I'm afraid that I have to say no because you couldn't really catch up with your friends here.
79
And when I first joined my English interview, even though I had prepared everything in advance, I learned by heart everything.
80
But then when I was actually standing in front of the interviewers, I was speechless.
81
I couldn't really say a word.
82
I was just looking at the ceiling and just smile and sometimes shaking.
83
But you know what?
84
I didn't stop right there.
85
I fall, I get up, and I keep working hard.
86
And the point here is that never be afraid of speaking out.
87
You know that you'll not be perfect at the first time, but then keep trying.
88
Forget about the noise around you and just focus on improving yourself.
89
just remember that everyone has to go through the same period that you're going through right now.
90
They used to make mistakes and then say the wrong thing and then pick the wrong grammar.
91
But then if they're judging you because of your imperfections, they don't worth your time.
92
So let's talk about a few tips that I got for you.
93
You know, over the past few years of teaching English
94
and then interacting with my customers when I was in the hospitality industry, I've learned and I've collected some of the tips of self-learning
95
and I believe that you will get a lot of takeaways from these tips.
96
Ready for the first one?
97
Shadowing method.
98
I think this is one of the most effective ways in terms of learning English at home when you do self-learning.
99
Just take it easy.
100
It is like you're listening or you're watching someone speak English and you will have to do immediately what they have done.
101
What I would recommend you doing for this shadowing technique is that you are going to choose some of your favorite topics.
102
And make sure that those topics are suitable for your level.
103
That is the very first thing.
104
Don't make it too hard, alright?
105
So start first with listening or watching the entire video first to get some of the basic knowledge of the content.
106
then stop every single sentence to practice and then go next with the paragraph and the whole video later.
107
And after a few times, you'll see you're taking progress, especially in your listening or speaking skill,
108
and you'll feel more natural with your intonation when speaking English and when pronouncing the words in English.
109
So one note is here, you don't have to understand 100% of the content.
110
Don't try to force yourself that you have to learn every single new word there.
111
as long as you are familiar with the mouth movements and the way that they link the sounds,
112
the way that they use intonation when they speak and pronounce the words.
113
That is the whole point of this shadowing technique.
114
So the second tip that I will share with you, that is practice with real people.
115
I know it might sound crazy and hard, especially for the beginner level.
116
Where can you find the native speakers or even the English speakers to practice?
117
If you're living in the city where you can see a lot of tourists, you just may go and then talk to them.
118
Start with some of the basic questions like how are you doing?
119
How are you today?
120
What do you like about the city?
121
So start with some of the small talks first, just to make sure that you can get over the fear of speaking out first
122
and you will see they are very friendly.
123
I've talked to a lot of strangers, especially the tourists, and then the first thing was just how you doing, how do you feel about the trip here,
124
but then they start to expand the conversation.
125
You see that the native speakers, they don't focus much on your pronunciation mistakes.
126
They encourage you to speak, and they help you instead instead.
127
I'm sure if you can practice this after a few times of trying to have the small talks with the strangers,
128
you will feel a lot more confident speaking English.
129
And if you don't have any opportunities to speak face to face with native speakers, you can take advantage of some of the online platforms.
130
You can also choose some of the group with the same level
131
so it's gonna be easier for you to exchange the knowledge
132
and can learn from each other but remember
133
that they will have the different accents
134
and you may not understand fully what they are saying
135
so then the thing here is
136
that you have the courage to communicate with them prepare for yourself some of the common topics
137
that you may use to introduce about yourself like your hometown your hobbies
138
and your job so we come down to the tip number Number 3, this is my favorite one also.
139
I've been using, I've been practicing, and I've been improving my English skills using this method,
140
which is recording yourself.
141
Like what I am doing right now, you need to write down everything carefully,
142
maybe you can use some of the AI tools to help you sharpen your language, but don't make it too hard, Just make sure it's suitable with your level,
143
that you feel confident to speak.
144
Prepare the script.
145
Go with some of the common topics first and start recording yourself.
146
Maybe one day you can answer three to five questions about a topic and then move it to the next day. Be consistent.
147
Imagine after one year, you get a lot of topics.
148
Remember, with this way, you're going to watch, you're going to listen again and then see
149
if you make any mistakes try to self-correct and then do it again until you can feel confident answering the specific question.
150
And for sure that over time, you will feel more confident listening to your voice,
151
self-correcting, and especially speaking English out loud.
152
So the next method that I would love to share is about learning by phrases, not the single word.
153
People are learning English by trying to intake as many vocabulary as possible.
154
And they can understand the meaning of the word, but then when it comes to speaking,
155
using those vocabulary in the real world situations, they start speaking out.
156
They don't know how to use the word when they speak.
157
We do have two types of vocabulary, the active vocabulary and the passive vocabulary.
158
Let me just give you an example here.
159
Active vocabulary, listen, talk, microphone, chair, table, go, school, those are active vocabulary.
160
And passive vocabulary, you may think about communicative, hectic schedule, dramatic, informative.
161
You see the difference between passive and active vocabulary.
162
Active vocabulary are some of the vocabulary that we understand the meaning and we can use it in our daily conversation.
163
Passive vocabulary, maybe you can understand like informative.
164
You might think, oh, it sounds like information.
165
but then actually you don't know how to use it when you write, when you speak, and those vocabulary are passive vocabulary.
166
And our job is to expand the circle of our active vocabulary.
167
And in order to do that, you have to use those passive vocabulary. And how?
168
You have to learn by phrases.
169
For example, I'll take the very basic word which is take.
170
We do have a lot of meanings for take.
171
If you learn by phrases, you will learn take care of somebody.
172
Like, I take care of Tommy when he's sick.
173
Don't forget to take good care of my dog when I'm away.
174
So you learn by phrases and then you will know how to use that one in the real world situation.
175
You can make examples with the word and it will gradually become your active vocabulary.
176
So the second way in order to expand the circle of your active vocabulary
177
is that you're going to try to make examples with the new words that you're learning.
178
Today you've learned about the informative.
179
So you try to make examples related to you.
180
For example, what Tommy have shared with me today about passive and active vocabulary is really informative.
181
And you know how to use the word informative in the real world situation.
182
So it becomes your active vocabulary.
183
But remember that if you don't use them, it will turn back into passive vocabulary.
184
So the thing is that keep practicing and then speak every day, try to practice every day.
185
If it becomes your passive vocabulary, don't be sad.
186
Try to get it back.
187
Okay?
188
So the last method that I will share is to use English in your daily life.
189
So be familiar with some of the objects around you.
190
Maybe a lot of people that I can see, they label the objects in their house.
191
Or I change the things around me to English.
192
For example, my laptop, my phone, I change the language to English so that I can be familiar with everything.
193
Sometimes you may not know how to use the function
194
but then when you look up for the meaning
195
and then you know what the word means and you learn the new word.
196
So using English in your daily life can be thinking about English.
197
For me, I always talk to myself.
198
I may not speak out the idea but then I think in my head
199
and then I just keep talking to myself in English, especially when I am driving or when I am going for a walk.
200
I always try to think in English.
201
So for example, when I go outside today, the traffic was bad.
202
So I started to have some of the conversation with myself like traffic today was bad.
203
I got a traffic jam, so I hate this one.
204
I don't think that I could get home on time to prepare for my lesson tonight things like that.
205
So try to think about English.
206
The habit of mine also at the end of the day is that I write down my to-do list in English.
207
I do my journal in English also.
208
So those are some of the ways to help me be more familiar with using English in my daily life.
209
So that brings us to the end of the episode today.
210
I do hope that those tips
211
that I've shared with you may be a sort of motivation
212
or inspiration for you to make your English journey more fun
213
and interesting and to make English a part of your daily life.
214
Remember, the small steps take you closer to your final goals.
215
And if you just spend a few minutes a day practicing, speaking, listening or writing, doing journal, you will get better.
216
So if you enjoyed the episode today, don't forget to share with your friends or even someone that you think they're struggling in learning English.
217
If you have any feedback or you have any tips that you want me to share with people, feel free to reach out because for me, we share to be shared.
218
That is the end of the episode today.
219
Thank you so much.
220
I hope you enjoyed.
221
Good night.
