1
If you forget words when you try to speak English, you're probably making this one big mistake.
2
Let's fix it.
3
Do any of these sound familiar to you?
4
When I come to speak English, my mind just goes blank.
5
When I want to speak, I forget the words I just learned yesterday.
6
I feel my vocabulary is too simple.
7
I feel so frustrated.
8
And as one student said, I feel like a bird with broken wings who's trying to fly,
9
but… Oh, what's happening?
10
What's going on?
11
Let's find out.
12
My name is Keith from English Speaking Success and the website the Keith Speaking Academy,
13
here to help you become a more confident speaker of English.
14
So if any of those student comments earlier sound familiar, then it's probably due to two things.
15
The first one is it may be that the way you're learning vocabulary, there's a problem there.
16
And the other one is to do with your mindset.
17
Actually, I have done a video all about how to learn vocabulary effectively.
18
It's up here.
19
It's three simple, effective steps on how to learn vocabulary.
20
It's great, even if I say so myself.
21
Can I say that?
22
Yeah.
23
Yeah.
24
It's pretty good.
25
If you haven't seen it, go and watch it now.
26
Oh no, that will ruin my YouTube analytics.
27
Nevermind.
28
It's important.
29
If you haven't seen it, go and watch this one first.
30
If you have, stay here.
31
In this video, I want to build on that video
32
and the idea and explain to you the one big mistake you're probably making when you're learning vocabulary.
33
Also, I want to talk about what the solution is.
34
And finally, I want to give you six practical, simple steps you can follow to learn vocabulary effectively.
35
Ready?
36
Good.
37
Before we begin, I also suggest that you download the PDF to this video
38
because there are several golden nuggets in this video
39
and I think you're going to want to come back to it again and again.
40
So you can go and download the PDF in the link below.
41
Right now, let's get into it.
42
Okay, so the big mistake.
43
The big mistake you're probably making is that maybe you think learning a word is this.
44
You see it or maybe you hear it somewhere.
45
You understand it.
46
You check the meaning in a dictionary and then you memorize it and that's it.
47
And then, great, I've learned it.
48
Now I can go and try and use it.
49
That's the big mistake because that is not learning a word.
50
Actually, what you've done is you have studied the word.
51
Learning is very different.
52
Learning is much, much deeper than studying.
53
Let me say that again.
54
Learning is much deeper than studying.
55
And it takes a lot longer.
56
Learning a word is this.
57
You see it or hear it somewhere.
58
You understand it.
59
Check the meaning in a dictionary, memorize it.
60
So far, so good, right?
61
And then you use it.
62
And the using it is part of the learning process.
63
In fact, I would even take out memorizing.
64
You can try and memorize.
65
I don't think it's that important.
66
Using it, it's part of the process.
67
And we haven't finished yet, right?
68
Learning the word is also then seeing it again in a different context, maybe several days later.
69
Understanding it, but this time, not the meaning, but understanding when and how you use it,
70
where you can use it, how to use it, and how not to use it.
71
It's a deeper understanding.
72
And then you're using it again.
73
And all of this is the learning process.
74
The last bit, probably repeating again and again, maybe for the rest of your life, maybe for a few weeks.
75
OK, so you can see here, right, what the problem is when you just some see,
76
understand and memorize and try and use it.
77
You may or may not be able to do it right because you haven't fully learned the word yet.
78
Can you see the difference?
79
So in my gold course, IELTS Speaking gold course, students may watch a lesson with me.
80
They then get a word list and they study 10 words.
81
And then they go and have a conversation in the breakout rooms, speaking practice rooms where they can speak to students all around the world.
82
And they say, I'm so frustrated.
83
I can't use these words perfectly.
84
And I say, no surprise, because you haven't learned them yet.
85
You've only studied them.
86
You're at the start of the journey.
87
It's like you've just got on the train.
88
You're just on the train and you start moving out of the station.
89
Yes, you've seen the words, you've understood them, you've memorized them, and then you want to get off the train.
90
You think you've arrived.
91
You haven't arrived.
92
The train is still going.
93
The whole process takes longer and the key is to change your mindset.
94
Don't be thinking, oh, come on, I should know this now.
95
Haven't I arrived?
96
No, you should be thinking, I'm going to enjoy the journey.
97
So much more to do.
98
Enjoy the journey.
99
It's a long process of learning.
100
Okay, now, in fact, there is another important thing that is going on, and I think it'll be useful for you to better understand what is happening, to know this.
101
Have you ever been in that situation where you hear a word or a phrase, you hear it, and you go, yep, I know that, got it.
102
And then you try and use it in a conversation, and you can't.
103
You don't know how to use it, right?
104
That's because there are two kinds of vocabulary.
105
There's passive and active.
106
And the passive bank are the words that you can recognize and understand, but you can't use them.
107
The active bank, which is normally much smaller, are the words that you recognize, understand, and you can actively use them.
108
That's why it's called active.
109
You can use them.
110
The passive bank will always be bigger than the active bank.
111
But the process of learning, this process, I call the SUSU process.
112
I have a niece called susu.
113
And this susu process is how you move the words from the passive to the active bank.
114
I'll give you some tips, very practical ways on doing that in a moment.
115
But it's important you understand.
116
I mean, the passive bank is always going to get bigger.
117
It doesn't disappear because every time you read and listen, that grows.
118
The important thing is that you are moving the words to the active, some of the words to the active area.
119
The more the better, but you will never get all of them across.
120
That's just the way we are.
121
Okay, and a final word of consolation.
122
When you feel frustrated with vocabulary, just let it be.
123
It's absolutely normal that you're not able to use them for all of the reasons I've explained, right?
124
I mean, speaking is complex.
125
There's so much going on.
126
Fluency, accuracy, the grammar, the pronunciation, the vocab.
127
It's not easy at all.
128
It's perfectly normal.
129
All of this takes time and practice.
130
Okay.
131
Going back to my original video, study, practice, and review that three-step process.
132
That's all what it's about.
133
Okay.
134
Let's move forward to solutions.
135
Okay, so now that you know what is happening, what do you need to do to learn vocabulary effectively?
136
What do you think?
137
Right, exactly.
138
It's basically focused more on learning, the learning process, not just studying, right?
139
The answer really is susu.
140
See or hear a word, understand it and use it and then see or hear it again, understand it on a deeper level,
141
use it and recycle, recycle, recycle all the time, right?
142
And have the mindset.
143
On a very practical level, here are six things you can do to help with this.
144
Number one, learn words in context.
145
It's much better to have a context than just a word list.
146
So listen to podcasts, videos, films, read articles, much better than word list.
147
Word lists are okay, but I do encourage you to make your own word list rather than just take them from somebody else.
148
Try and make your own word list from the things you're listening to and reading.
149
That process of making your own list also helps your learning and your assimilation or acquisition of the language.
150
Number two, don't focus on memorizing, focus on using.
151
Number three, focus on being active, right?
152
To get the words from the passive bank to the active bank, so to go from understanding a word to being able to use it,
153
you need to do activities to do that.
154
That may include simply repeating a word, making up phrases, your own phrases,
155
making up a story with the word or some of the words, practicing one or two of the words in a conversation.
156
Try not to go into a conversation with a list of 10 words, hoping to use them.
157
It's too many.
158
One or two is enough.
159
Number four, change your mindset.
160
Focus on the journey, not the destination, right?
161
When you're learning, you're on the train, it's probably not time to get off.
162
Stay on the train, focus on the learning process, on enjoying that process, right?
163
Rather than just ticking off words on a list.
164
And an interesting note here, because I know some of you use flash cards.
165
I use flash cards.
166
Just be careful.
167
Do you know when you swipe and you go to the left?
168
Yes, I know it.
169
Yes, I know it.
170
To the right, I don't know it.
171
I don't know it.
172
Just be careful what you mean when you say, I know it.
173
Does that mean you understand it or you can use it?
174
Just be careful with that.
175
Flashcards are great, really good tool to use, but be aware of what you mean when you swipe either way.
176
Number five, stop trying too hard.
177
Hooray, at last, a teacher who tells me to slow down because I know so many teachers, school and university are pushing and pushing and pushing you.
178
Listen, stop trying too hard.
179
Instead of trying to build up a huge bank of advanced vocabulary,
180
focus your time and energy on moving the words you know from the passive bank to the active bank.
181
See step number three above on how to do that.
182
Okay.
183
Chill.
184
Number six, if you're in a conversation and you block, can't find the word, paraphrase.
185
Paraphrasing is a great skill to learn.
186
It's where you don't know the exact word, so you try and say it in another way.
187
It's a great skill because it helps you communicate.
188
It helps your fluency.
189
It's evaluated in IELTS speaking.
190
It's a necessary skill and it's just,
191
it's a great thing to do rather than being like, um, paraphrase.
192
And those are the six simple steps.
193
Let me give you a number seven for free, an extra one.
194
And that is listen more to English.
195
I would say read as well, but if you're focusing on speaking, the listening is the parallel skill, right?
196
Listen more to build up your passive vocabulary to build up that kind of feeling you have for the language,
197
to build up your appreciation of the melody of the language and the pronunciation.
198
Listen more.
199
I think you should be listening to at least an hour a day of English if you really want to make progress.
200
That's it.
201
So now you know why you are forgetting words when speaking, right?
202
You know what to do.
203
Focus more on the learning process, not just the studying.
204
And it's great.
205
I mean, yes, learning is deeper.
206
It takes more time.
207
It's more time on the train.
208
Enjoy yourself on the train of learning English.
209
That's it for today.
210
If you've liked this video, give me a like.
211
Do remember to subscribe.
212
I do encourage you to download the PDF just to go back and review these points, help you as you start implementing them.
213
Maybe just choose one or two to start putting into action and start noticing the results and work on your mindset.
214
Don't forget that.
215
It's very important.
216
Great.
217
Thank you so much for watching, my friends.
218
And I will see you maybe in the next video.
219
Take care.
220
Bye-bye.
221
you
