1
Come on with me to an American pharmacy.
2
I'd like to take you inside of an American pharmacy to show you what it's like
3
and if you ever visit the U.S and you need to visit a pharmacy or you would like to,
4
I'd like to help you make that a smoother and easier experience.
5
And like always, I have created a free PDF worksheet with all of today's important expressions,
6
ideas, and helpful tips to help you navigate visiting the U.S a little bit easier.
7
So you can click on the link in the description to download that free PDF worksheet today.
8
All right, are you ready to join me,
9
Vanessa, and my baby, Matilda, inside the pharmacy?
10
Let's go.
11
So inside a pharmacy in the U.S.,
12
there are a lot of things that you can purchase.
13
You might think that a pharmacy is just for medicine,
14
but that's not true.
15
There's a lot of different sections, so let's walk around.
16
Here we are in the cosmetics section.
17
Cosmetics means makeup.
18
And you can see down each aisle like this.
19
You can buy soap, shampoo,
20
really anything you could imagine.
21
Little toys and trinkets.
22
There are endless amounts of things you can get at a pharmacy.
23
In fact, this is something that the U.S is kind of known for,
24
for having stores that are a one-stop shop.
25
That means you can stop one place and get everything you need.
26
Very convenient and kind of a stereotype.
27
This is where you would go if you were celebrating a birthday party and you wanted to buy some balloons,
28
candles, themed birthday plates for your kids,
29
birthday cards, any cards for really any occasion.
30
In fact, this is something that pharmacies are known for,
31
is having lots of cards.
32
So if you are on the way somewhere and you realize I forgot to bring a card,
33
well, you can just stop into a pharmacy.
34
Let's see.
35
So over here you can see this is the actual pharmacy part.
36
You can go to the clinic,
37
you can actually see somebody who is a certified nurse or doctor,
38
someone who can give you some advice about a medical issue.
39
Generally it's a good idea to make an appointment,
40
but you can always drop in and ask if they have any way
41
that you can talk with someone if you have an issue.
42
Over here, you can see it says in big letters,
43
what we came for pharmacy.
44
So at the pharmacy, this is where you would go if you were going to pick up a prescription.
45
And in the US, there's a couple different ways to get medicine.
46
Unfortunately, a lot of medications that are pretty typical,
47
like an antibiotic, you have to have a prescription,
48
which means you need to see a doctor first.
49
You have to pay to see the doctor.
50
The doctor has to evaluate if you need that medicine,
51
and then they will send a prescription to your chosen pharmacy.
52
So when you go to a doctor in the U.S.,
53
they'll ask, what is your preferred pharmacy?
54
And you'll choose maybe a place like this,
55
and you'll say the address and the location,
56
and then you can come here and you can pick up your prescription whenever it's available.
57
I see my baby has noticed the microphone.
58
You want to grab that?
59
Not a good idea.
60
It is possible that you could ask the pharmacist or if they have a little clinic like this,
61
you could ask them for some advice.
62
So if you have no appointment,
63
if you just need some medical advice.
64
Maybe you're on a vacation and you have a cough that won't go away.
65
You could ask, hey, do you have any recommendations?
66
What should I do?
67
You could ask them for advice.
68
Who knows what they'll say,
69
but it's always worth it and it's no problem to ask.
70
Let's take a look at some of the aisles to see
71
what kind of medication you can get over the counter and I'll explain what that means.
72
So, for example, this is the children's section,
73
but let's say you have allergies,
74
terrible allergies, and you visit the U.S during like a spring season,
75
you will need to get some allergy medicine.
76
This is something that you can get over the counter.
77
These are children's allergy medications in the children's section,
78
but you can get allergy medicine.
79
medicine, you can get pain and fever relieving medicine over the counter.
80
And I've always been a little bit confused by this phrase because where's the counter?
81
There's no counter.
82
Instead, that's the counter where you actually have to have a prescription.
83
So don't be confused.
84
Over the counter means that you can just walk in and get it.
85
You don't need a prescription.
86
You don't need a doctor's approval.
87
You can just walk in and get anything over the counter,
88
even though that's the counter.
89
Don't be confused.
90
Sometimes English is strange.
91
All right, let's keep walking and see what else you can get.
92
Need some Kleenex?
93
You can get Kleenex.
94
You can get wrapping paper if it's Christmas time like it is now.
95
You can get reading glasses if you forgot your reading glasses.
96
You can even get some kind of minor medical supplies.
97
There are some hearing aids.
98
There are some braces for your arm.
99
There are alarm clocks.
100
Eternity testing kits.
101
I didn't even know you could get that here.
102
There's thermometers.
103
Pain medication.
104
Sometimes in the U.S we do use, you're right, baby?
105
Sometimes we do use the brand name.
106
Oh, a little cough.
107
Baby, you need some medication.
108
We do use the brand name to talk about medications.
109
So if you ask a pharmacist,
110
I have a cough, what should I do?
111
and they recommend a specific brand name to you and you're not familiar with it,
112
you can just ask, oh,
113
is that a cough medication or is that a fever reducing medication?
114
You're welcome to ask for clarification because sometimes I don't know what the medication is either.
115
So feel free to ask for clarification if you're not sure.
116
All right, let's keep going.
117
Lots and lots of medication.
118
Lots and lots.
119
All right, we're getting to the section of stuff.
120
Not medicine anymore.
121
Candy, candy, candy.
122
So if you need to buy any dry goods,
123
maybe last minute Christmas presents,
124
you can get toilet paper,
125
laundry detergent, all of these types of dry goods.
126
And there's even lots of different types of foods.
127
So let's go take a look at the food.
128
There's candy and candy and candy and candy.
129
Lots of candy.
130
But if you're not but there might be seasonal items as well.
131
Right now it is almost Christmas.
132
I know it's after Christmas when you're watching this, but imagine Christmas.
133
So lots of candy for stockings and different seasonal things.
134
There's many toys down here.
135
Let's actually go down the next aisle.
136
I wanna show you something.
137
These types of things are like grab and go snacks.
138
So you could get pistachios.
139
Chocolate covered almonds.
140
I love that kind of stuff.
141
More trail makes dried fruit,
142
chips, lots of soda, lots and lots of soda.
143
Beef jerky, lots of beef jerky apparently.
144
Different types of popcorn and juices.
145
And back here, it's a little bit loud.
146
There are coolers where you can get cooled drinks.
147
And guess what?
148
in some pharmacies in the US, you can buy alcohol.
149
Did you hear that right?
150
Alcohol.
151
You can get beer and wine in some pharmacies and that's really normal.
152
Here, I guess in this pharmacy, I don't see any.
153
It might be state by state too.
154
Different states have different rules,
155
but don't be surprised if you walk into a pharmacy and there's wine.
156
Grab a bottle of of wine and go have a party.
157
Let's go down here for the last section.
158
This is the baby section.
159
So if you have a baby like I do,
160
and you need to buy anything like specific baby medicine,
161
baby soaps, diapers, wipes, any of these types of things,
162
you can get this here.
163
So it's pretty incredible.
164
Pharmacies are so inclusive, many different things.
165
They are really a one-stop shop.
166
Now I must say
167
that oftentimes pharmacies in the U.S are going to be more expensive than going to somewhere like Walmart
168
or purchasing something online if you have that option.
169
But you know what?
170
Sometimes when you're visiting or you're traveling,
171
it's nice to just go to one of these places that's an easy access
172
and one-stop shop and you can just get whatever you need to get.
173
All right, I'm going to grab a pack of baby wipes.
174
You always need baby wipes when you have a baby
175
and we're going to go to the checkout and I'll show you how the checkout works.
176
If I remember right, this pharmacy has a couple checkout options.
177
So let's go see.
178
Oh, you can even get stuff for your car.
179
Pretty amazing.
180
If you need some washer fluid or something for your car or to wash your clothes, it's here.
181
Welcome.
182
If you have your extra care.
183
So I'm going to use the self-checkout because that's the easiest option and there's nobody here right now.
184
And I think those are pretty much Pretty much the same all world.
185
I did!
186
One little note as I do this,
187
there is a photo studio.
188
So if you want to have any pictures printed and you don't have access to doing that online,
189
this is a great place to do that.
190
So you can get your pictures printed here.
191
All right, I'm going to not scan any coupons.
192
And I'm going to continue.
193
No. And I will use my card.
194
All right.
195
Now I know in some countries you have to just put your card in really quickly.
196
Sometimes in the U.S it's quick.
197
Sometimes you have to leave it in there.
198
So please read the pin pad little screen and make sure you're doing it the right way.
199
all right I don't want a receipt so I'll click no receipt
200
and that's it I'm not going to use a bag I'll
201
just carry it out myself let's go you're welcome I just
202
want to let you know there also is an ATM at a lot of CVS's you can use the ATM
203
or what you can do
204
if you go to the checkout counter where there's an actual
205
person there I think you can do this at the self-checkout too you can choose cash back
206
and you can get cash back.
207
So if you need $20 in cash,
208
you're welcome to go to the counter and buy something small,
209
buy a little candy bar or some gum,
210
and then ask for some cash back.
211
And you can get cash back or you can use the ATM.
212
That's what we call it in the US.
213
In fact, it's right here.
214
A-T-M.
215
You can use that as well to get money back.
216
All right, let's leave.
217
Come on.
218
All right, I want to show you something else down here.
219
This is kind of a blast from the past.
220
I don't know if in your country people use DVDs still or if they're more likely to use Netflix.
221
In the US, DVDs are not very common.
222
But this is a machine where you can rent DVDs and they will come out of here.
223
I guess this little slot.
224
They'll come out and you can actually take the physical DVD home.
225
It's called a Redbox.
226
It's kind of a blast from the past.
227
I don't know how many people actually use these.
228
But you know what?
229
If you need a DVD, go for it.
230
Enjoy the Redbox at the pharmacy.
231
Well, thanks so much for joining me at an American pharmacy.
232
I want to know in the comments,
233
how different is this than a pharmacy where you're from?
234

235
