1
Can I get a tall chai?
2
A large black coffee.
3
A what?
4
A large black coffee.
5
Do you mean a venti?
6
No, I mean a large.
7
He means a venti.
8
Yeah, the biggest one you got.
9
A venti is large.
10
No, a venti is 20.
11
Danny.
12
Yeah.
13
Large is large.
14
In fact, tall is large, and grande is Spanish for large.
15
Venti is the only one that doesn't mean large.
16
It's also the only one that's Italian.
17
Congratulations, you're stupid in three languages.
18
Coffee.
19
The only reason that I'm actually awake right now, and one of the greatest things in the world.
20
That's not just my opinion either.
21
That's actually true.
22
So how do we order coffee and what are the different names of different kinds of coffee?
23
The first thing to understand is that actually most of the English names for different kinds of coffee are not English.
24
They're Italian because the kind of coffee that we make in, for example, Starbucks comes from Italy.
25
I'll talk more about that later.
26
But how do we order coffee in a coffee shop?
27
So you go into the coffee shop and the person who's standing there is called a barista.
28
A barista, the person who makes the coffee.
29
I used to be a barista.
30
My first job was at a pizza place and then later I worked at a coffee shop in Seattle as a barista barista.
31
So you go in and the barista will say hi, how can I help you today?
32
How can I help you today?
33
Or what would you like?
34
What would you like?
35
Sometimes they'll say what can I get for you?
36
So those are common ways for the barista to greet you.
37
They will say sometimes what can I get for you today?
38
Why would they say today?
39
So I don't know.
40
I don't know the reason, but they say today for some reason.
41
When I was a barista, I didn't say, I didn't say, what can I get for you today?
42
Because it is today.
43
You go in, they say that, then you need to say what you want.
44
To say what you want, you just say, I'll have, or can I get, or I'd like.
45
I'll have, can I get, or I'd like.
46
These are the three common ways to say what you want.
47
It's polite, and you can use them in lots of different situations like this.
48
okay so i'll have then you need to say the size of the coffee now usually for most places
49
you just say small medium large pretty simple small medium large
50
but at starbucks they have weird names for their sizes
51
so you say i'll have a small that would be at a normal place Starbucks, the small, is called a tall.
52
A tall is a small.
53
The medium is grande.
54
Grande means big in Italian and Spanish.
55
And I think Portuguese too.
56
It means big.
57
So medium means big.
58
Anyway, tall, grande, and then the biggest one, the large, is called venti.
59
Venti means 20 in Italian means 20 because it's 20 ounces.
60
So normally we say small, medium, large.
61
Starbucks we say tall, grande, venti.
62
Can I get a grande?
63
And then you say the name of the drink you want.
64
Now the names of the drinks,
65
as I mentioned, are in Italian because the coffee culture we have in,
66
for example, America, at Starbucks, comes from Italy.
67
It's Italian -style coffee.
68
That big machine that baristas use, that's called an espresso machine.
69
That really, really strong coffee that...
70
Coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee.
71
That really strong coffee that comes out is called espresso.
72
Espresso comes out in a little glass.
73
It's a shot glass.
74
It's called a shot glass.
75
And a shot of espresso is one little glass filled with really strong coffee, and most of the drinks you order have that inside.
76
So what are the different drinks that are made with espresso?
77
First you have a latte, probably the most popular.
78
A latte is just espresso, one or two shots, steamed milk, which means hot milk,
79
and maybe a little bit of foam on top foam is very light milk with a lot of air inside
80
so there's a latte then there's a cappuccino cappuccino is the same as a latte espresso
81
and then maybe a little steamed milk and a lot of foam
82
that milk that you can basically eat so they're the same thing just more
83
or less foam that's the difference then there's a mocha.
84
A mocha is a little bit of chocolate sauce, espresso, milk, and maybe whipped cream on the top.
85
What's the difference between hot chocolate
86
and a mocha? it's only one difference the only difference is
87
a mocha has espresso has coffee actually inside okay then there's an americano not american coffee an americano
88
because remember they're italian names these are all italian names cappuccino latte americano americano is just water
89
and espresso so it's basically black coffee water and espresso what's the difference between that and black coffee.
90
Black coffee is made with a different kind of machine.
91
So it's made with we could say a drip coffee machine.
92
It's brewed, it's made differently with a different process.
93
So if you say I'll have a drip coffee, can I get a grande drip coffee?
94
Can I get a grande americano?
95
Basically those two will taste pretty much the same
96
but some people prefer one or the other but
97
that is not espresso drip coffee it's a little bit different sometimes
98
when you order coffee you might want to mention
99
that you don't want caffeine maybe you had too much today
100
or you can't drink caffeine
101
and you might want to also ask for different kinds of milk
102
so if you want regular caffeine regular milk say nothing just say i'll have a venti mocha
103
but if you want to have for example nonfat milk nonfat milk you need to say
104
that when you're ordering the drink almond milk
105
or rice milk they have different kinds of milk usually rice milk almond milk
106
and nonfat milk otherwise they'll just use regular milk then you can say before
107
that if you don't want caffeine you can say decaf decaffeinated decaf
108
or you can say half -calf half -calf means it has half caffeine
109
so if you want to make a complicated to drink,
110
you might say, I'll have a venti half -calf nonfat cappuccino.
111
Venti half -calf nonfat cappuccino.
112
Can I get a grande decaf almond milk mocha?
113
Sounds complicated, but if you have been paying attention for the last few minutes, now you know what that means.
114
So anyway, those are the most popular drinks that you would get at a coffee shop.
115
There's also pure espresso, maybe two shots of espresso, and then you wake up.
116
Oh, and there's one more that's very interesting.
117
It's called a, it's called a red eye.
118
A red eye has espresso and drip coffee.
119
Make coffee and then you put espresso inside and it is really strong.
120
Lots and lots of caffeine.
121
That's all.
122
That's how you order coffee.
123
All you need to know is I'll have
124
and then you need to know the different names of the different kinds of coffee drinks.
125
Anyway, Okay, thanks for watching and I'll see you next time.
