Today I'm going to upgrade your English in 15 minutes.
2
Let's do it.
3
Hello, it's Keith from the Keith Speaking Academy, here to help you upgrade your spoken English.
4
So if you're studying for IELTS, I'll show you how you can go from a band 6 to a band 7.
5
And also if you're just studying for general English conversational English.
6
This will help you to see how you can expand your vocabulary and be more flexible and precise with your spoken English.
7
So what I'll do is I'll show you 10 different situations where we use English
8
and I'll show you a simple basic sentence, then an upgraded version, and then why it's better.
9
And that's it.
10
Okay, let's do it.
11
Let's begin with situation or function Number one.
12
Okay, giving opinions.
13
I'm going to give you a sentence that is simple.
14
Actually, I'm going to call it nice and simple because it's still good English
15
and then an upgraded version and then explain why.
16
Okay, giving opinions.
17
Here we go.
18
I think it's good because it helps people.
19
I'd say it's generally a positive thing because it helps people in the long run
20
okay now the upgraded version is upgraded
21
because it uses what we call hedging it's quite soft instead
22
of saying it's good like for everybody it helps people it helps everybody well does it Is it black and white?
23
It's generally a positive thing.
24
It's more subtle.
25
It's just softening it, making it more, almost more precise, if you like.
26
It's not black and white.
27
It's generally a positive thing.
28
And secondly, we're giving a time reference in the long run.
29
A nice way of developing your answer or your phrase.
30
Okay, number two.
31
Okay, number two, giving reasons.
32
I like it because it's interesting i like it mainly because it keeps me engaged and it's mentally challenging
33
so the second one here again is using hedging and softening i like it mainly because
34
suggesting it's not the only reason there's more nuance there right i like it mainly because and And then secondly,
35
we're using more precise verbs.
36
If you say it's interesting, what does that mean?
37
It's interesting, it can be many things.
38
Precise verbs are great for precise meaning, right?
39
It keeps me engaged, it's mentally challenging.
40
Nice way, again, to develop your sentences.
41
Next one.
42
Okay, next, talking about frequency.
43
Nice and simple.
44
I often go to the gym.
45
Upgraded.
46
I try to go to the gym two or three times a week, depending on my schedule.
47
Okay, so what we've done here is we've gone into more detail, more specific.
48
Rather than saying often, never, rarely, sometimes, you can switch that to twice a week,
49
two or three times a day, just being more specific.
50
And then also, depending on my schedule, it's introducing kind of a real life constraint.
51
In reality, that we are constrained by our timetable.
52
So it's giving extra information.
53
And don't be afraid with longer sentences to pause.
54
You'll notice I had a very natural pause in the middle.
55
I try to go to the gym two or three times a week, depending on my schedule.
56
It's perfectly natural.
57
It's nice.
58
So don't be afraid to upgrade.
59
Let's move on to number four.
60
Okay, adding detail.
61
Nice and simple.
62
I live in a big city.
63
It's busy in summer.
64
upgraded.
65
I live in a fairly large city on the coast, so it's quite lively, especially in the summer.
66
Right, the upgrade here is all about adverbs, these softening adverbs.
67
It's fairly large.
68
It's quite lively.
69
These just give it an extra nuance, a bit more precision, especially in summer.
70
Okay.
71
And the other thing to notice is the so.
72
We're adding an extra clause and connecting it.
73
Rather than I live in a big city, it's busy in summer.
74
I live in a fairly large city on the coast.
75
So, consequence, so, it's quite lively, especially in summer.
76
Nice way to upgrade your sentences.
77
Let's move on to number five.
78
Right, number five is describing preferences.
79
Nice and simple.
80
I prefer watching movies at home.
81
Upgraded.
82
Overall, I prefer watching movies at home mainly because it's more comfortable and less expensive.
83
So what we've got here again is that hedging, that kind of softening.
84
I prefer blah, blah, blah.
85
It's very blank and kind of direct.
86
Overall, I prefer, or generally speaking, or I tend to prefer, it's a great way to hedge or soften what you're saying.
87
Very natural in spoken English.
88
Generally, I prefer watching movies at home, So mainly because, again, just that softening.
89
Not because, but mainly because.
90
And then secondly, we've got these comparatives.
91
So giving a reason why you prefer it, comparing.
92
If you prefer A to B, you'll be using comparatives.
93
Here it's more comfortable and less expensive.
94
Great way to extend and develop your sentences and upgrade.
95
Let's take a little break.

108
Right now, let's get back to our lesson.
109
Right, next one.
110
But first, just a word of warning or a caveat.
111
You may be thinking, Keith, do I have to use such complicated language all the time?
112
No, you don't.
113
Native speakers use a mix of simple and complex language.
114
That's why I call the examples nice and simple.
115
It's absolutely fine, but sometimes you may want to upgrade and use more complex language.
116
Don't feel the pressure.
117
Let's get into number six.
118
Okay, number six, expressing uncertainty.
119
Classic IELTS exam situation.
120
Nice and simple.
121
I'm not sure.
122
Upgraded.
123
I haven't really thought about it before, but I'd probably say.
124
Here, it's just a classic time filler.
125
You're gaining time by saying something.
126
It's also quite nice grammar.
127
I haven't thought about it before.
128
And a bit of hedging, again, softening, I'd probably say, you're not sure, right?
129
So I'd probably say, da, da, da, da.
130
Great IELTS strategy.
131
Let's move on to number seven.
132
Okay, number seven is talking about the past.
133
Nice and simple.
134
When I was a child, I played football a lot.
135
Upgraded.
136
When I was younger, I used to play football quite regularly with my friends after school.
137
So what's different here?
138
In the upgraded, instead of using the simple past, which is fine, we're using used to.
139
It's another way of expressing the past.
140
I used to play football quite regularly.
141
Again, it's a frequency marker.
142
Instead of a lot, quite regularly, a bit more precise.
143
And then finally, we're giving context with my friends after school.
144
Giving a bit of extra context just makes it richer communication.
145
Let's move on.
146
OK, comparing past and present.
147
Nice and simple.
148
My life is different now.
149
Upgraded.
150
My life has changed quite a lot compared to a few years ago, especially in terms of work. So what's different here?
151
We've used a comparison phrase, right?
152
We say compared to a few years ago.
153
Being more precise, rather than my life is different now, my life has changed quite a lot compared to five years ago.
154
Specific comparative time reference, right?
155
And then we've got this narrowing of the topic, especially in terms of work.
156
So if your life has changed, narrow the topic and talk about one specific thing, especially in terms of work.
157
It's a great technique for so many situations.
158
You narrow the topic, you go down that path.
159
Great way to develop your sentences and answers if you're doing IELTS speaking.
160
Next.
161
Okay, number nine, giving examples.
162
Nice and simple.
163
I like pop music.
164
For For example, Taylor Swift.
165
Upgraded.
166
I like pop music.
167
Take Taylor Swift, for example.
168
I think she's so creative and entertaining.
169
Now, the first one is good, but the second one is more natural.
170
For example, Taylor Swift.
171
It's okay, but take for example, a bit more natural.
172
And secondly, there's a reason.
173
You're then adding why she's a good example.
174
I think she's so creative and entertaining.
175
Adding that extra reason, developing your sentence.
176
Good.
177
Let's move on to the last one, number 10.
178
Okay, finally, ending answers naturally.
179
Nice and simple.
180
That's it.
181
Upgraded.
182
So yeah, that's probably the main reason.
183
Okay, that's it.
184
I actually say that in my videos a lot, right?
185
That's it.
186
End of the video.
187
That's fine.
188
But in a conversation or with an examiner in an interview, not very natural.
189
It's too sharp, too direct.
190
That's it.
191
Yeah.
192
So, yeah, that's probably the main reason.
193
Probably, again, hedging, softening, nice, natural way to end your answer.
194
And takes us to a nice, natural ending of the video, I think.
195
So let me just summarize how we've upgraded our vocabulary and our sentences here.
196
We've used a very, very British thing here, which is hedging and softening.
197
It's mainly because I'd probably say, very nice, very useful.
198
We're explaining and giving reasons for things.
199
So, being more precise, using adverbs, right?
200
It's fairly good.
201
It's quite lively.
202
Really nice way to develop and upgrade.
203
adding a frequency or time frame.
204
Instead of I often go, I go two times a week or twice a week.
205
Giving more context.
206
I play football with my friends after school or narrowing the topic, right?
207
My life has changed, especially in terms of work.
208
Things like this.
209
These are all lovely ways to upgrade your vocabulary or extend your language.
210
As I said in the break, don't feel you have to always use complicated English.
211
No, it's a balance.
212
Sometimes simple, nice and simple, sometimes upgraded.
213
Okay, get the balance right, as the famous singers of Depeche Mode said.
214
That's it for today.
215

本视频的口语提升目标
本视频旨在帮助学习者在15分钟内提升英语口语的灵活性与精准度,无论是针对雅思口语从6分冲刺7分,还是日常会话能力提升,都能通过实用技巧实现突破。核心在于通过"升级"基础句型,让表达更细腻、具体,摆脱生硬感,同时融入"shadowspeak"(影子跟读法)所需的自然节奏训练,为口语练习打下坚实基础。
实用表达短语库
- 表达观点:"I'd say it's generally a positive thing..."(我认为这总体上是积极的...),通过"generally"软化语气,增强表达的严谨性。
- 说明原因:"I like it mainly because it keeps me engaged..."(我喜欢它主要是因为它能让我投入...),"mainly"体现原因的主次,"keeps me engaged"比"interesting"更精准。
- 描述频率:"I try to go to the gym two or three times a week, depending on my schedule..."(我尽量每周去两三次健身房,视日程而定...),用具体次数替代"often",并加入实际约束条件,让表达更真实。
