Living things have different ways to make more of their kind, which we call reproduction.

For example, plants often make seeds which can grow into new plants.

An apple tree makes apples and inside each apple are seeds.

If a seed lands in soil and has enough water and sunlight, it can grow into a new apple tree.

Animals also reproduce, but they do in different ways.

Some animals like dogs and cats give birth to live young.

A baby cat, or kitten, grows inside its mother until it is ready to be born.

Many animals like birds and frogs lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young.

A bird will lay eggs in a nest, and after some time, baby birds will hatch from the eggs.

Smaller animals like spiders and insects reproduce by laying eggs too.

There are also animals that do a bit of both.

For example, a platypus, which is a mammal like a dog or a cat, actually lays eggs.

Living things have many different ways to reproduce, but all of them are doing the same thing, making more of their kind to continue the life cycle.
