So December 20th, 1981, I made my Broadway debut.

I actually made my Broadway debut in one of two flops that were just too disastrous to mention.

And so I claimed Dreamgirls as the debut.

That was the best and the worst time of my whole life.

The best of course was being the belle of the ball on Broadway.

Anybody who was anybody was coming to see the dreams.

Couldn't get a cab once the curtain came down but that's a whole nother story.

But in the midst of that amazing time in my life came the worst

and that was when my friends just started dropping dead they were sick today

and dead tomorrow they were sick today and dead tomorrow and

when you would go to the hospital to look for your

friend they would be out in the hallway on a gurney

pushed up against a wall dying for help dying for love dying to be seen

and some of them with that sign on their gurney

that said do not touch and they suffered

and people wanted to act like they hadn't been good people kind people wonderful people somebody's son somebody's daughter

somebody people good people kind people people of all religions faiths

and belief took comfort in pointing fingers saying they them those

all of you that's what you get that's what you deserve ah

that was 40 years ago 40 years ago human rights campaign

was happy to have just 300 people in the room 40 years ago,

but look what organization, look what strategizing,

look what opening your hearts and minds up to people who don't look like you can do.
