hello friend I'm hope
2
and I'm really glad you're here today welcome to English with hope a calm space for your mind
3
and your heart in this channel you don't have to be
4
perfect you don't have to rush here we learn English slowly we listen English gently no pressure no stress
5
and here you are not alone wherever you are in the world I'm right here with you
6
so relax your shoulders take a slow breath and let's begin can I ask you something not something hard just something honest
7
is there something in your past
8
that you still think about maybe it comes in the quiet moments
9
when you're lying in bed when you're on the bus
10
when you're just sitting there
11
and suddenly something old comes back a memory a moment a
12
person a version of yourself you're not sure you're proud of maybe it's something
13
that hurt you maybe it's something you did maybe it's a chapter
14
that ended too soon or maybe it's a chapter
15
that went on for too long whatever it is I want
16
you to know something you are not strange for holding on you are not broken you are human
17
and holding on is something we all do today we are going to sit with
18
that we are going to look at what it means to hold on to carry something heavy from the past
19
and then slowly gently we are going to explore what it might feel like to begin to let it go
20
not all at once not perfectly just a little just enough to breathe again
21
because I believe something I believe you didn't come to this episode by accident something brought you here
22
and I think part of you is ready ready to loosen
23
the grip ready to stop carrying what no longer serves you this episode is called letting go of the past
24
and I want you to think of this not as advice
25
not as a lesson think of it as a quiet conversation between you
26
and me between you
27
and yourself are you ready let's go I want to tell
28
you about a girl let's call her Sarah Sarah was the
29
kind of person who remembered everything she She remembered the exact words people said to her.
30
She remembered the exact moment things changed.
31
She remembered the day she felt happy.
32
Really, truly happy.
33
And she remembered the exact day that happiness disappeared.
34
Sarah was 26.
35
She had a job she liked.
36
Friends who loved her.
37
A small apartment with a plant on the windowsill.
38
the outside her life looked fine
39
but inside Sarah's heart there was a box she never talked
40
about the box she kept it pushed to the corner of herself
41
but it was always there heavy familiar inside the box were things she couldn't throw away an old relationship
42
that had ended badly
43
words an ex-partner once said to her you're too much Sarah
44
you're always too much Sarah a job she had lost two
45
years ago a job she had loved the memory of failing an important exam
46
when she was 19
47
and something older deeper a moment from childhood she rarely let
48
herself think about about she kept all of it in the box
49
and every night without meaning to she would open the box
50
just for a moment just to check just to remember she
51
told herself it was normal she told herself she was just processing
52
but the truth was this Sarah didn't know how to live without the box it It had been with her
53
so long that it felt like part of her.
54
One afternoon, her older sister came to visit.
55
They were sitting on the floor of Sarah's apartment, drinking tea.
56
The plant on the windowsill caught the late afternoon light.
57
It was one of those rare golden hours.
58
Soft and still.
59
The sister looked at Sarah and said quietly, You look tired.
60
Sarah laughed.
61
I'm fine, she said.
62
The sister didn't argue.
63
She just nodded.
64
Then she said something Sarah never forgot She said, you know, you're allowed to put things down,
65
Sarah You don't have to keep carrying them everywhere Sarah didn't answer,
66
she looked at her tea She felt her throat tighten And for a moment,
67
just a moment, she felt something shift Not fixed,
68
not healed, just loosened Like something that had been tied very tightly around her chest had given just a little slack.
69
She didn't open the box that night.
70
She didn't throw it away either.
71
She wasn't ready for that.
72
But she didn't open it.
73
And the next morning, she woke up, and the first thing she felt was not the weight of everything behind her.
74
The first thing she felt was the light through the window.
75
It was golden, and it was now.
76
I share Sarah's story
77
because I think many of us have a box we all
78
carry something maybe yours a shame maybe it's grief maybe it's anger
79
that never found the right place to go maybe it's the quiet persistent feeling
80
that you made a mistake somewhere
81
and you still haven't forgiven yourself whatever you carry I see it
82
and I want to tell you what I've come to understand
83
about the box I want to be honest with you I
84
don't have all the answers here I'm not standing above you
85
looking down saying here is the formula do these steps be
86
free now I'm sitting beside you on the same floor holding my own cup of tea
87
because letting go is something I am still learning to every day in small imperfect ways
88
but there are three things I've come to understand three things
89
that have helped me breathe a little easier
90
and today I want to share them with you the first
91
thing I want you to remember holding on is not a
92
weakness it was protection I used to think something was wrong
93
with me why couldn't I just move on why did I
94
keep returning to the same memories the same conversations the same regrets why did my mind keep replaying things
95
that were already over I
96
felt weak I felt stuck I felt like everyone else had figured out how to let go
97
and I was the only one still standing in yesterday
98
but then I learned something that changed everything for me the mind holds on
99
because it is trying to protect you
100
when something painful happens your brain doesn't just file it away
101
and forget it it studies it it replays it it asks
102
what went wrong how do I make sure this never happens again.
103
This is not a flaw.
104
This is your mind doing its job.
105
Your nervous system learned that this memory was important, dangerous, worth watching.
106
So it kept it close, very close.
107
And for a long time that was exactly what you needed.
108
Here's a private thought I once had.
109
I remember sitting in my car one evening after a difficult day.
110
And I thought, Why do I keep punishing myself with this memory?
111
Why won't my brain just let me be?
112
And then very quietly, something answered back.
113
Not a voice, just a feeling.
114
Because you loved that thing.
115
And love doesn't disappear just because it's over. That stopped me completely.
116
I sat there for a long time.
117
And something in me softened.
118
Holding on is not weakness.
119
It was care.
120
It was love.
121
It was your whole self saying, this mattered to me.
122
The past hurts most when it mattered most.
123
So instead of asking yourself, why can't I let go?
124
Try asking, what am I still honoring by holding this?
125
That question doesn't shame you.
126
It sees you.
127
And maybe, just maybe, once something feels truly seen, it becomes a little easier to release.
128
The next time a memory comes back, don't fight it.
129
Don't push it away.
130
Just place your hand gently on your chest and say, quietly, I see you.
131
You mattered.
132
And I am safe now.
133
That is enough.
134
Just that.
135
the second thing I want you to remember you are not the same person who lived through
136
that this one takes time to feel
137
so I want you to stay with me for a moment think about who you were back then
138
when that hard thing happened when that mistake was made when that loss occurred how old were you
139
what did you know then did you know differently now what were you carrying then on top of everything else
140
because here's what I think we forget we judge our past selves with our present wisdom we look back
141
and say I should have known better I should have left
142
sooner I should have tried harder I shouldn't have said that
143
but that person the one back then they were doing the best they could
144
with what they knew with what they had with how much space they had inside them at
145
that time you were not failing you were surviving I think of it like this
146
imagine a child learning to walk they fall of course they fall falling is part of learning.
147
Now imagine going back to that child, that small, brave child taking their very first steps and saying, you should have walked better.
148
Why did you fall so many times?
149
You would never do that.
150
You would kneel down.
151
You would hold out your hand.
152
You would say, you're doing so well.
153
Look how far you've come.
154
But we do that to ourselves all the time.
155
go back to our younger selves our more afraid selves
156
and we judge them harshly without mercy what
157
if we tried something different what if we went back to
158
that version of ourselves with kindness not to excuse what happened not to pretend it didn't hurt
159
but to say you were trying in your own way with
160
what you had you were trying a private thought I once
161
had I remember looking at an old photo of myself from a very difficult period
162
and my first instinct was to feel embarrassed ashamed even
163
but then I looked more carefully and I saw someone who was just
164
afraid just someone trying to hold themselves together
165
and I felt something unexpected I felt tenderness not pride not
166
pain just tenderness like meeting a stranger who reminds you of yourself you are not
167
that person anymore you have grown you have changed even when it didn't feel like change,
168
even when it felt like standing still.
169
You are not the same, and the past cannot define someone who no longer exists in that same form.
170
A small thing you can try, find one photo of yourself from a hard time,
171
or just close your eyes and picture yourself back then,
172
and say, gently, honestly, I understand why you did what you did.
173
I forgive you, you were learning.
174
You don't have to believe it fully the first time.
175
Just say it.
176
Let your ears hear you say it.
177
The third thing I want you to remember.
178
Letting go doesn't mean forgetting.
179
It means choosing your present.
180
I think this is the biggest misunderstanding
181
when people say let go of the past it can feel
182
like they're asking you to erase it to pretend it never happened to delete the memory to stop caring
183
and that feels impossible
184
because you can't unknow something you can't unlove someone you can't unfeel a feeling
185
that was real so you hold on
186
because letting go feels like losing something all over again
187
but I want to offer you a different picture imagine you
188
are holding a stone a heavy stone you've been holding it
189
for a long time your hand is tired your arm aches someone says put the stone down
190
and you panic but if i put it down what
191
if i forget it was there what if i lose the proof
192
that it happened what if letting go means it didn't matter
193
but here's what i want you to see putting the stone
194
down doesn't make it disappear the stone still exists it is still real it still happened
195
but now your hands are free now you can hold other things better things softer things things
196
that belong to today letting go is not forgetting it is simply choosing to stop carrying it is saying This happened.
197
It was real.
198
It changed me.
199
And I am choosing, slowly, gently, to carry it differently now.
200
Not in my clenched fist, but in my open heart.
201
There is a difference between remembering something and being imprisoned by it.
202
You are allowed to remember.
203
You are allowed to honor what was.
204
And you are also allowed to be here.
205
Now.
206
In this moment.
207
Where the light is different.
208
Where you are different.
209
A small thing you can try when the past pulls at you and it will try this one sentence.
210
Say to yourself, that was then, this is now, and now is where I live.
211
Just that.
212
Let it be a small, quiet anchor.
213
A way of coming back to yourself.
214
You don't have to banish the past.
215
You just have to remember where you actually are You are here right now reading breathing
216
Alive and Here right here is where your life is happening
217
Let's slow down for a moment no lessons no pressure just you and me I
218
I know everything about letting go can feel far away sometimes like it makes sense in your mind
219
but not quite in your heart
220
and maybe a part of you is thinking you don't know
221
what I've been carrying you're right I don't know all of it
222
but I know this
223
if you're still here still listening still trying then you've already
224
been strong in ways you don't even see maybe it was love
225
that didn't last maybe it was a choice you wish you
226
could change maybe it's something you're still quietly carrying every day whatever it is it mattered
227
and it still matters
228
but here's something gentle to remember your past is something you
229
went through not something you have to stay in all those what ifs
230
they don't have answers because your life didn't go
231
that way it went this way and somehow you made it here
232
that matters more than you think if there's shame if there's regret
233
that doesn't define you you are not your worst moment you
234
are the person who kept going after it everything you've been through it It didn't ruin you.
235
It shaped you.
236
It softened you.
237
It made you more human, more real.
238
And that is something beautiful.
239
So hear this gently.
240
You are not your past.
241
You are what survived it.
242
You're allowed to put the weight down now, not all at once, just a little.
243
You're allowed to choose today, as it is.
244
And if you're here, Still trying to understand yourself with kindness?
245
That's already growth.
246
That's already healing.
247
And you're already on your way.
248
We're almost at the end.
249
And I don't want to give you a long list.
250
No steps.
251
No pressure.
252
Because healing isn't something you complete.
253
It's something you practice.
254
Gently.
255
Slowly.
256
One day at a time.
257
So today, just one small thing.
258
Tonight when things feel a little quieter, take any piece of paper and write one sentence.
259
I am choosing to release.
260
Then finish it.
261
However it feels true for you.
262
It could be guilt.
263
A past version of yourself.
264
A hope you've been holding on to.
265
Whatever it is, just write it.
266
Let it exist outside of you for a moment.
267
Then look at it and softly...
