1
My name's Camden.
2
I move to a new country every single month and these are the things that I wish I knew
3
before I came and spent the last month and a half here in Istanbul.
4
First tip that totally tricked me up the first night.
5
There's something called Galataport and if you're a cruise ship person to come through Istanbul,
6
that's where you're going to dock and the place seems so nice but avoid that place like no other.
7
That place is just a tourist trap.
8
Everything's really expensive.
9
The restaurants are no good.
10
Get as far away from the Galataport as you can.
11
So that's tip number one.
12
Second thing is this is a crazy loud city and sort of spring earplugs if you're a light sleeper.
13
Towards the end of this video I'm going to talk about
14
which areas of town I recommend staying in
15
if you're trying to avoid some of that but yeah just make sure
16
that you have some earplugs if you are that light sleeper and also make sure to pack really good walking shoes.
17
This city is really spread out.
18
It takes a long time to get from one point to another
19
and most of the time you're going to be doing walking and there's a lot of hills.
20
So you're dealing with The cobblestone treats going up hills,
21
I don't know, it can be a real challenge.
22
So make sure that you have the proper footwear.
23
But if you don't want to do all the walking,
24
I highly recommend you actually utilize their public transportation system because it is great.
25
They have like the metro,
26
they've got like their subway version thing, these carts.
27
They have the ferries.
28
I mean, it's really, really well connected.
29
And that's really the best way to get around.
30
And just get yourself one of these when you come in.
31
It's called the Istanbul Cart.
32
And you can basically get them outside of any ferry port or metro line.
33
I think it costs like two dollars to actually get the card
34
and then you can just load it up with as much
35
as you want Next piece is saving yourself some money
36
If you want to be on the water
37
and take a boat tour you can if you want to
38
but if you're looking to save some cash Don't
39
and instead utilize this card and just take the ferry over to the Asia
40
or European side Whichever place you're staying on go to the opposite,
41
but basically the ferry ride they're like 50 cents They're fantastic views.
42
They're running all day You can hop on them from like any point.
43
Really great views, really comfortable,
44
and it's just a much cheaper way to do things.
45
Like 50 cents, that's a steal.
46
I guess you've got to come back so a dollar
47
but who wouldn't want to spend a dollar for a boat ride
48
and kind of feel like you're living like a local
49
so definitely save some money there and do that another tip
50
that I recommend for everybody is you can actually download Google Maps
51
and this is a pretty important city to do that in mainly
52
because the Wi-Fi is a bit spotty this isn't really one
53
of those cities where it's like yeah just go down the main road
54
and turn left no there's gonna be a lot of turns and tricky navigations.
55
There are a lot of tight super cute streets
56
but things can get confusing so you're definitely gonna want a map
57
and if you're wanting to make sure that you always have connection I definitely recommend an eSIM called Aerolo.
58
I used it here for the last month and a half
59
and it worked like a charm and saved me multiple times
60
so I'll leave a link in the description so you can try that.
61
If you're not familiar with an eSIM it's basically a way of getting a SIM card
62
but electronically and they're great
63
because it doesn't give you a new phone number you can still text
64
and call like normal it's just giving you data
65
so you can browse the internet make sure you can navigate your way it's just super simple
66
and you can download it before your trip okay
67
so this next one is a little bit weird maybe a little bit gross
68
but i think you should know about it
69
and i haven't heard other people talking about it
70
so there are obviously a lot of cats in istanbul
71
and dogs and birds and the locals do such an incredible job taking care of the cats
72
that they leave food out everywhere so all the cats are fed
73
and that is awesome two things happen with that though one The dogs also eat all the food,
74
so there's a lot of poop around on the ground,
75
but it's not the poop on the ground that you're looking out for.
76
It's actually coming from the sky because the birds,
77
they eat everything as well,
78
and these birds are massive.
79
And the worst part, big birds mean really, really big poops.
80
So I hope that you have better luck than me in kind of wood getting pooped on,
81
but maybe just have some wet wipes in your bag so you can wipe yourself off when it does happen.
82
So, I don't know, fingers crossed for you, and next tip.
83
If you're coming ready to experience the coffee, definitely experience it.
84
Note that it's not gonna be quite the coffee that you've experienced in other countries.
85
It's very different.
86
But also note that tea is actually the primary drink here in Turkey.
87
While Turkish coffee is awesome in its own disgusting ways in my opinion the tea is really really good
88
and that's what most people are drinking all the time they
89
come in these awesome cups it's really satisfying to drink out of
90
so be ready for a lot of tea
91
and coffee this next one's a small tip and it doesn't really matter
92
but just something to be prepared for there's definitely a lot
93
less english spoken here amongst the locals than other european country
94
so be prepared for a lot of Turkish
95
which is a tough language to figure out you still shouldn't have too much of an issue communicating with folks
96
but don't be expecting everybody to be able to understand all of your English
97
so unless you're awesome
98
and actually know Turkish just be prepared to slow down the dialogue just a little bit
99
when talking with some of the locals who don't know English quite as well
100
and another thing to note is when you're going to the mosques because because you should definitely check them out.
101
They are so, so beautiful.
102
Two big tips here.
103
One, they're free, but make sure to get there as early as possible in the day.
104
I tend to recommend getting there around like the 9.30, 10 a.m mark for two reasons.
105
One is that you'll beat most of the tourists and the tour groups.
106
Two is that the mosques actually close for prayer time.
107
Now you can just look up the mosque and see exactly what time they're closed for prayer time,
108
but the lines get really long when people don't realize that they're gonna be closed.
109
The line backs up, it's just something that you want to avoid
110
and note that you will have to take off your shoes before entering
111
and they've got these cubbies where you can just keep them
112
but the tip here is actually bring a pair of socks because
113
if you're anything like me it just doesn't feel the best
114
walking around on like this sweaty carpet where everybody else is either barefoot
115
or have their sweaty socks so it might feel cleaner to just have
116
that spare pair and pop those on when you're leaving the mosque
117
but definitely check those out
118
and then the last thing i wanted to give you tips about is just
119
which area of town to stay in depending on what you're looking for.
120
So a few big areas.
121
There's the Faith area, which is where most of the big mosques are going to be.
122
And you're going to be really close to a lot of the main tourist attractions.
123
It's a beautiful area, definitely a little bit touristy,
124
but it's on the European side and there's nothing wrong with it.
125
Perfectly fine place to stay.
126
Then you have like the Galata Tower area and to be honest,
127
I think that's a little bit too touristy.
128
You're going to be fighting the hills the whole time.
129
Probably not my first recommendation,
130
maybe somewhere else in Karakoy,
131
which is kind of hugs the water and you don't have to walk up as many hills.
132
So similar area, it's still going to put you in the heart of all the action.
133
and Karakoy has great nightlife.
134
Karakoy has a few areas where you're like right up along the water,
135
easy access to the ferries and other public transportation,
136
great street food, really fun place to be especially if you want to have that nightlife experience,
137
but do note that it is definitely noisy.
138
There's also a neighborhood called Chahangir?
139
Chahangir?
140
Yeah, I don't know.
141
Locals correct me.
142
Sorry if I botched that pronunciation,
143
but Chahangir was a really,
144
really cool neighborhood on the European side that felt very local it was a little bit quieter
145
didn't have any tourists it was really really nice
146
and is kind of close-ish to the Taksim Square provides easy access I'd really recommend there
147
if you have a longer stay and you want to experience
148
that local culture Taksim Square I didn't love I really wouldn't recommend anybody staying up there I get
149
that it gets a lot of publicity and people think
150
that it's the great area to stay for me in my opinion i just didn't think
151
so i thought it was pretty touristy nothing too special i'd probably avoid
152
that area as a whole but the place
153
that i wouldn't avoid is the asian side specifically katakoy
154
and more specifically a neighborhood called moda moda was just unlike anywhere else
155
that we experienced in istanbul really quiet really local feel
156
so many young people a lot of great restaurants fun energy just it's definitely the area
157
that i will be staying the next time i come back
158
and it's where i spent basically all of my time
159
so highly recommend making sure to get over to the asia side now
160
if you're wanting to learn more about what you're going to love
161
and might even hate about istanbul don't worry i got you
