Hi.
2
Today I'm going to teach you how to write.
3
Write like a human being.
4
In today's day and age, people are getting dumber and dumber, and I think it's really important that we all know how to write, how to put our thoughts on paper, how to think clearly, and if you're someone who goes to write
5
and then can't produce anything or you feel like your ideas are bad, this video is for you.
6
I, myself, am a writer.
7
I am the author of the self -published Dopamine Hole and the soon -to -be -released How to Run Away from Home.
8
Today is really just about the basic writing process.
9
I write everything by hand.
10
I do this every single day, and everything that I create is downstream of a basic writing practice.
11
So that's what we're going to teach today through three basic drills.
12
I don't care if you're just getting started.
13
If you've been writing for years and just feel a little bit stuck, I'm going to help you out here.
14
So I think a lot of people have the experience of going to journal
15
or going to write and then immediately having no ideas, or they think their ideas are bad, or they just start something and it just isn't coming out the way they want it to, so they stop.
16
How many people say, I'm going to start journaling, and they make it a day or a week, and then they just kind of stop.
17
It's very common.
18
And so I think people need a process.
19
When you go to start working out in the gym, you don't do so with zero plan.
20
You learn some very basic drills, some exercises, a simple workout program you can follow without thinking too much.
21
And that's what allows you to stay consistent because you go in and you don't have to think about what to do.
22
So let's just jump right in.
23
I want you to get for yourself a journal and a pen, something you can write with and on.
24
Highly recommend that you do this by hand.
25
You can do it on your computer.
26
You can even voice note it if you can't write, but I highly recommend you do this by hand.
27
This is part of the human skill that we're cultivating.
28
Handwriting is like what makes you a human being, and that's what's going to help us stand out amongst the robots which are coming.
29
So get yourself a journal and a pen.
30
The first drill that we're going to talk about here is called observation, and observation is the basic skill involved in writing.
31
Here's a situation for you.
32
Let's say you're on your way to work.
33
Maybe you're late.
34
Maybe you're on the train, and you have a moment to write.
35
You're going to use this moment for a little creative practice.
36
I think that's great.
37
This observation drill involves taking out your journal, getting your pen, and then making a very simple list of things that you observe in the physical world.
38
The reason I love this drill is because it doesn't require you to think.
39
It doesn't require you to interpret too much.
40
All you do is you use your eyes and your ears
41
and your nose and all of your other senses to just write down what is going on in the physical world.
42
And you prove to yourself that you can observe things.
43
You can write them down.
44
There is a man seated next to me.
45
He smells like he's wearing too much cologne.
46
The train has stopped for five minutes now.
47
What I'll encourage you to do with this drill is not include any emotions.
48
Don't write about how you're feeling.
49
Don't try to impose feelings on the experience.
50
Just map the experience.
51
Just write out a list of things that are occurring and that have happened.
52
Requires no thought or interpretation.
53
But what's interesting about this is that it is a creative exercise in that you don't include everything in that list.
54
Notice what your attention immediately gravitates towards.
55
You might not write down every single thing that's happening.
56
That would be impossible.
57
But you will include the things that stand out to you.
58
And that tells you a little something.
59
So that's the observation drill.
60
You can just start with that.
61
You can do that anytime.
62
Highly recommend for when you're feeling overwhelmed and you can't sort through your thoughts.
63
It can be a really daunting task to try to figure out, oh, what am I feeling right now, especially when things are going on in your personal life, when there's just all kinds of stuff going on, don't worry about it.
64
Ground yourself.
65
And you can do that with pen and paper by just writing down things.
66
The wall is white.
67
The sky outside is gray.
68
Simple stuff, not complex prose.
69
Now you'll notice some very famous writers like Chekhov, like Hemingway, like many others, write very simple sentences that are just these basic observations about the world.
70
But readers love that because that paints a picture that we can access.
71
Okay, it's not about writing the most complicated, ornate, beautiful prose.
72
It's about making accurate observations and painting a little impressionistic portrait of your experience in that moment.
73
If you do this once a day, you're going to improve as a writer.
74
You're going to improve your own observation muscle within you, and you will build your confidence
75
because you will have filled at least one page with a list of observations that occurred in the physical world.
76
Great.
77
That's drill number one.
78
Drill number two is reaction or continuation.
79
I like reaction.
80
We'll call it that.
81
This is just taking it a step further.
82
So you're going to start again.
83
Let's say you're still on the train.
84
You're still late for work.
85
You're going to write down one sentence.
86
Okay.
87
I am late to work.
88
And then what you're going to do is just react to it.
89
Okay.
90
You're going to try to continue that stream of thought for the entire page or two pages, whatever comes out of you.
91
And the trick is to just not stop writing.
92
This is really good for when you're feeling overwhelmed, but you can tell there's a lot of energy in you
93
that needs to come out okay you want to be very
94
kind of aggressive with the page in this drill you're just
95
going to keep writing things down keep writing things down connect
96
one thought to the next the train is moving faster
97
and i'm worried about what's going to happen when i get into work
98
and what my boss is going to say to me
99
and you don't have to sort through it doesn't have to
100
be clean in a perfect world it's just one long run -on sentence again nothing you're going to publish
101
This is for you.
102
This is a private writing practice that's going to build your muscle, your creative muscle.
103
And then over time, that turns into something.
104
That's what turns into potentially writing a short story or multiple collections of short stories.
105
Holy glaze.
106
So just react to it.
107
Okay.
108
This is a lesson that comes from one of my favorite writers, George Saunders, who in a recent podcast with Rick Rubin referred to writing
109
and creativity as just one long process of reaction you put something down
110
and then you react to it and you do
111
that a bunch of times and the more times
112
that you do it the more complex
113
or the more vivid a piece becomes right the more intentionality
114
that goes into it but that's a little bit in the weeds we're not worried about
115
that yet all you're worried about is you're not worried
116
but all you're thinking about is one observation
117
and then a reaction to it reaction reaction reaction you see
118
how this is different from the first drill the first drill
119
is more like a list okay just a bunch like 20
120
individual uh things you notice reaction is taking it a step
121
further where then you can you link them together i am
122
i am you can use emotions at this part i am
123
nervous i am afraid of what's going to happen blah blah blah blah blah
124
and you just get the thoughts out okay notice with both
125
of these drills you are not thinking you are not trying
126
to make something beautiful you are not thinking about how you're going to post this
127
or what people are going to think about it
128
because it is purely for you okay the same way that
129
if you start going to the gym you're not going to post every single workout.
130
You're going to build your foundation.
131
You're going to do it for you.
132
And over time, you might build a movement practice or a physique that you feel inclined to share with the world, but that's not at all required.
133
And that's not the kind of benefit we're talking about.
134
This is writing for mental health, not writing for becoming famous on the internet.
135
But they go hand in hand.
136
Okay.
137
And then the last drill that we'll cover for right now is narrative.
138
So after you built an observation practice and then a reaction practice, now you can start playing around with narratives.
139
So this is really good when you're trying to sort through a recent experience that you don't quite understand.
140
It can be really helpful to create distance from an emotional experience.
141
And so what you might do is write in the third person.
142
John was late to work today.
143
He got to the train five minutes later than he normally did because he failed to get up with his first alarm.
144
He still went through his 20 push -ups that he did first thing in the morning,
145
but then his water kettle was broken and his tea was not made on time.
146
And you just kind of write this out and you just do it really sloppy, right?
147
And you're just making these little observations with a little distance.
148
Now, what separates narrative from other forms of writing like poetry, in my view, is that narrative constitutes a fundamental change.
149
There's some kind of change that has to happen.
150
And that can be really helpful when you're trying to write through your own experiences, because it allows you to, you automatically start noticing the change that you went through.
151
Maybe by being late to work, you reached a point of serenity or a point of inner peace where you were like, yeah, I'm not really, I'm not going to worry too much about it.
152
Or maybe you didn't get to a point of inner peace and the whole story is just a constant escalation towards turmoil.
153
All of these are really sometimes fun practices to relate to your own experience.
154
But they build on each other.
155
So you start with observation.
156
Can you just observe the physical things in the world around you without any interpretation or imposing feelings on it?
157
Can you then continue that?
158
Can you react to each observation, right?
159
And create this kind of linear stream of thoughts.
160
And then lastly, narrative.
161
Can you synthesize a fundamental change?
162
Can you notice that fundamental change within yourself?
163
Okay.
164
What I would do if I were you
165
and I wanted to start writing is I would just start with the observation and just start doing that.
166
The beautiful thing about journaling and writing is
167
that you get better over time if you just do it if you do this practice 20 times,
168
your body, your brain, your spirit will learn to crave the practice because it will associate it with a feeling of release,
169
which is ultimately what you need when you're feeling overwhelmed or stressed or anxious or directionless.
170
You need release.
171
You need somewhere to pour the energy.
172
Otherwise, it just accumulates within you and makes you feel really anxious.
173
That's what writing can offer you.
174
And that's what I'm going to recommend you start with.
175
Building this skill is how you fortify your mind in the age of brain rod, in the age of addictive entertainment and algorithms that want to exploit you and sell you for advertising dollars.
176
This is part of the resistance.
177
It's an act of creative resistance, and this is maybe the war of our time.
178
I talk about this stuff all the time, but understand how these small little practices can very, very meaningfully contribute to the development of yourself and then potentially the species.
179
This is what we need to be doing right now.
180
Observe the physical world around you.
181
Then react to each of your thoughts, creating a stream of thought.
182
And then lastly, create some narrative.
183
And often you don't have to invent this.
184
It presents itself.
185
That was the other point on observation.
186
If you just observe accurately, you notice that there is narrative all around you.
187
There are interesting things all around you.
188
You just have to observe it.
189
Train your human skill of observation and you'll realize you're a much better writer than you initially thought.
190
Train it.
191
Practice it.
192
You have the skill.
193
Or you will have the skill.
194
You have the ability to do this.
195
I promise you.
196
If you have any questions, let me know.
197
But I think that's all for today.
198
I hope this is helpful.
199
Boom.
200
Peace.
