Interventional cerebrovascular neurosurgery is the treatment of cerebrovascular diseases or blood vessel problems in the brain using minimally invasive techniques.

We can treat a range of conditions with endovascular neurosurgery

and this has proven to be an excellent technique for the treatment of anything from carotid stenting,

patients with narrowings in the arteries in the neck,

aneurysms in the brain, and we can also treat tangles of blood vessels in the brain,

we call them arteriovenous malformations.

It's very important for us when a patient comes to the cerebrovascular center that we individualize their care.

Every aneurysm is different, every arteriovenous malformation is different,
9
and every patient is different.

Some patients may not be suitable for endovascular procedures.

They might be allergic to some of the medicines that they need to be on,
12
blood thinning medications for example if we needed to place a stent,
13
or they may just not want the endovascular procedure.

Sometimes the open vascular procedure provides a more durable outcome.

So when patients come to the office,
16
we can discuss all the options and what the best outcomes are going to be with the least amount of risk.

And we have a big team who work with the patient to determine what's going to be the best treatment for them.

Depending on the procedure, some of our endovascular treatments we do with a patient sedated,
19
but they don't have to undergo general anesthesia.

For some of the more complicated procedures we do under general anesthesia
21
and typically the procedures take significantly less time than an open vascular procedure.

We can go in through the artery in the hip with a small straw
23
and with a series of smaller
24
and smaller straws we go up into the arteries in the brain and we can seal off aneurysms,

treat arteriovenous malformations or tangles of blood vessels in the brain with minimally invasive techniques

and usually with the endovascular techniques that's going home the next day without an incision on the head

and returning to normal life as soon as they can.

In terms of safety what we know is

that outcomes are dependent on the volume that a center does

so it's important to go to a place that does a lot of these procedures because they're quite complicated.
