1
In this American English pronunciation video, you're going to join me at my friend's wedding on a beautiful farm,
2
and study the pronunciation of the word wedding and other two-syllable words.
3
Today I'm at the wedding of one of my very best friends.
4
Her name is Laura, and you have seen her previously in the video where we made a pumpkin pie.
5
The word wedding.
6
It's It's a two-syllable word, so we have one stressed and one unstressed syllable.
7
The word begins with the W consonant sound, so the lips will come into a tight circle for that.
8
Then the jaw has to drop a good bit for that EH as in bed vowel.
9
Then we have the D consonant sound opening up into the ING.
10
Now that's the unstressed syllable, so it's going to lower in pitch, pretty quick, ding, ding, ding.
11
So the tongue tip starts here for the D, quickly comes down for the IH, and then the back of the tongue makes contact here for the NG.
12
Make sure the tip of the tongue does not come back up, that would be an N ending.
13
Common mistake.
14
We want the NG back here.
15
Wedding.
16
Wedding.
17
Every two-syllable word in American English will have one stressed and one unstressed syllable.
18
So one will be longer and have shape in the voice, and the other will be short and flat, and low in pitch.
19
To make both syllables the same length is not correct and ignores the rhythmic structure of American English.
20
Speaking with an American rhythm is key to sounding natural.
21
Wed-ing.
22
There I have made both syllables the same length, and all the sounds are correct.
23
Wed-ing.
24
Even so, it will not sound right
25
because it does not have the correct rhythmic structure of one long and one short syllable.
26
Wedding.
27
Long short.
28
Wedding.
29
Let's study more two-syllable words.

  • Today I'm at the wedding (اليوم أنا في حفل الزفاف)
  • One of my very best friends (واحدة من أفضل أصدقائي)
  • Make sure the tip of the tongue does not come back up (تأكد من أن طرف اللسان لا يعود إلى الأعلى)
  • Speaking with an American rhythm is key
