Hey everybody!
2
In today's video I'm going to talk about some tricky homophones in English.
3
Homophones are words that have the same pronunciation but different meanings or spellings.
4
I'm going to show you some homophones that you might not know about, and I'll show you some words that you might think are homophones, but they're not.

Alright, so let's see some examples of words that have the same pronunciation when used in a sentence.
8
First, let's look at the words "I'll" and "all".
9
When I say these words in isolation, they're pronounced differently.
10
But when I say them in a real sentence, they're pronounced the same.
11
For example, listen to these two sentences: All sea creatures are interesting.
12
I'll see if they want to go.
13
The contraction "I'll" is pronounced "all" when we say it in a sentence at normal speed.
14
We don't say "I'll see." We say "I'll see." Okay, here's another example.
15
Let's look at the words "and," "an,"
16
and "in." These three words are pronounced the same when we say them in a sentence at normal speed.
17
For example, listen to this sentence: The man works in an office and likes it.
18
In this sentence, all three of those words are pronounced in.
19
Interesting, huh?
20
Here's one more example.
21
Let's look at the words "for" and "fur".
22
These words are also pronounced the same when we say them in a sentence at normal speed.
23
Listen to this sentence: This shampoo is for fur, not for human hair.
24
Did you hear that?
25
They're pronounced the same.
26
So why does this happen?
27
Well, in English, words and syllables are stressed differently.
28
Some syllables receive stress and others are unstressed.
29
When a syllable is unstressed, it often becomes reduced.
30
and when a syllable is reduced, its pronunciation often changes.
31
The words "I'll", "and", and "for" are unstressed when used in normal sentences,
32
and so they become reduced and their pronunciation changes.
33
Now let's look at a few examples of words that look like homophones, but they're not.
34
For example, let's look at the words "to", "to", and "to".
35
You might think that these words are pronounced exactly the same, but in normal sentences, the word "t -o" is unstressed and its pronunciation changes.
36
Listen to this sentence: He had to buy two cakes too.
37
Notice that I don't say he had to buy.
38
I say, "He had to buy." The word TO is pronounced /d / in this sentence.
39
This is how it's reduced and in other sentences it might be pronounced /t / but it's not pronounced 'to'.
40
Now let's look at the words "for" and "for." We already saw how the word "for" is reduced.
41
It's not pronounced like the number four when we say it in a sentence.
42
For example, we don't say "I want four tickets for my family." We would say,
43
"I want four tickets for my family." The word "for" reduces to "fur." Here's one more example.
44
Let's look at the words "heal" and "heal." You might think that these words are pronounced the same, but in a real sentence, they're not.
45
Listen to this sentence: I think he'll heal soon.
46
They're not pronounced the same, huh?
47
We don't say "heal -heal", we say "he'll heal".
48
The contraction "heal" is unstressed in the sentence and it reduces to "hill".
49
This is why it's important to understand the concepts of stress and reduced speech in English.
