1
PSG kept finding themselves with acres of space to run at City's backline.
2
And this fast vertical football was the driving force behind their goals, repeatedly making Man City's defence look completely exposed.
3
So in this video, we're going to take a look at how PSG's rotations made life incredibly difficult for Man City,
4
and how their press made it impossible for Man City to stick to their game plan.
5
But we also need to take a look at some halftime changes from Maresca, and how these transformed
6
City's approach in the second half.
7
welcome back to football meta it's no secret
8
that psg are one of the most aggressive pressing teams in europe
9
and against city we saw exactly why it's
10
so difficult for their opponents to find any solution man city
11
wanted to play their usual possession football building from the back
12
and gradually creating their 3 -1 -3 -3 shape they would create this shape with gradiol moving inside
13
and fernandez pushing forward alongside shirky
14
and anderson would remain as the single pivot in front of the back three
15
but for man city to establish this shape their players needed time to rotate into position
16
and psg simply wouldn't allow them
17
that time from the high press
18
we see how tightly every outfield player is tracked as soon
19
as the ball goes back to donnarumma he's immediately rushed into
20
playing long with very few short passing options available even
21
when city managed to progress slightly further up the pitch psg had a clear pressing trigger whenever city played the ball backwards,
22
the entire team stepped forward, closing every single player down and making it incredibly difficult to receive the ball facing forward.
23
City were either forced back towards their goalkeeper or had to play long.
24
We see a great example of this in the 15th minute, with PSG already leading 2 -0.
25
The move starts with a fairly standard throw -in for City.
26
But as soon as the ball goes backwards, watch how every PSG player steps forward.
27
Dembele continues his run towards Donnarumma, making a pass back to Diaz virtually impossible, while the central passing options are marked tightly.
28
The pass eventually goes into Guardio, who is immediately tracked by Hakimi.
29
And every time
30
City look as though they might have found a way out, another PSG player is ready to close them down.
31
And when the ball finally reaches Doku, the centre -back Marquinhos steps forward aggressively to close him down.
32
Eventually, PSG force a mistake, and Vettinha finds himself with space on the edge of the box to shoot nearly making it 3 -0
33
so man city simply couldn't establish any control in possession psg kept forcing them backwards leaving donnarumma with little choice
34
but to go long where psg could regain possession
35
and launch another attack in fact this pressure directly contributed to the goal
36
that made it 3 -0 as well once again psg forced man city long recovered the ball
37
and attacked quickly with city's defensive line being dragged backwards
38
and leaving space for vitina to finish nicely on the edge of the box
39
but there's another little detail that psg follow that makes their press even more dangerous and difficult to escape
40
when a psg player closed down an opponent and
41
that player passed the ball to someone else the presser wouldn't necessarily stop instead
42
they continue their run towards the next player
43
while the rest of the team adjusts around them for example if dembele presses the center back before chasing the goalkeeper,
44
and City managed the pass into the holding midfielder, then in this case, Zaire Emery would immediately close him down,
45
and if the ball went back to the other centre -back, he would continue his run forward, making a pass back into Anderson almost impossible,
46
and immediately applying pressure on the free player.
47
Meanwhile, the rest of the PSG players would tighten around the ball, leaving the only free option on the opposite side of the pitch.
48
This essentially meant that
49
Man City had no free option and struggled to find the safe pass to make
50
so the press from psg was certainly the main reason why they were
51
so dominant in the first half but there was another important detail
52
that made all their attacks incredibly dangerous as well
53
but before we look at that
54
if you're a coach looking to improve your training sessions
55
then you should definitely check out sideline sideline lets
56
you easily generate the perfect training session by telling
57
it exactly what you're after the latest update lets
58
you add your own squad with sideline automatically splitting your players into teams based on their positions
59
And its improved search engine can also find and combine suitable drills.
60
For example, if you have 16 players, it can help you organize two simultaneous 4v4 games.
61
You can also track your sessions using the history and calendar features.

65
Now let's take a look at how PSG's rotations created so many issues for Man City.
66
We have a good example in the 20th minute.
67
PSG once again forced
68
City lock, regain possession, and begin another attack.
69
This time we can see that
70
City's defensive approach is much more passive than PSG's press.
71
The problem is that
72
City are combining man marking and zonal principles.
73
The defensive line tries to maintain its shape, while the midfielders and attackers are expected to close down PSG's defenders and midfielders.
74
Against a team that rotates as frequently as PSG,
75
This creates a difficult decision should a player follow their opponent or maintain their position and protect the space
76
In this example, as PSG moved the ball to the right and City stepped forward, Dembele finds himself completely unmarked.
77
He can receive the ball, turn, and attack the defensive line.
78
This was a recurring problem.
79
City's defenders wanted to maintain their shape, but their midfielders and attackers were stepping forward to close down the ball.
80
And PSG could continuously exploit these gaps between the lines, receiving the ball facing forward and running directly at the defense.
81
But these rotations weren't only happening when PSG were already high up the pitch.
82
And Man City also struggled to deal with these rotations when PSG were playing out from the back.
83
And this was directly responsible for their opening goal.
84
The move starts with PSG in a relatively standard shape, as City prepare to press high.
85
But as soon as Marquinhos takes control of the ball, several rotations happen simultaneously.
86
Vitinha makes a rapid forward run, but Scherke doesn't follow him.
87
Dembele drops towards the ball, and is picked up by Guardiol, which prevents Guardiol from closing down Hakimi.
88
Meanwhile Fabian Ruiz shifts across to provide additional support.
89
Within seconds PSG have disrupted
90
City's initial pressing structure, and created a numerical advantage.
91
Even when Dembele's pass is intercepted, Ruiz is completely free to collect the loose ball and restart the attack.
92
He finds Hakimi out wide, who is once again unmarked, creating another 4v3 situation on the flank.
93
city are then forced to push more players forward to compensate
94
but that only creates another problem because gay is left in a 2v1
95
and can't close down a kliush who plays a 1 -2
96
and breaks into the space in midfield from there psg can
97
attack at speed eventually moving the ball out wide to doing who cuts inside
98
and finishes brilliantly from outside the box at halftime it was 3 -0 to psg
99
and frankly the score could have been even more one -sided in favor of the Parisians.
100
But in the second half Maresca didn't waste any time in making some tactical changes
101
and immediately made three substitutions at half time.
102
Doku, Shirky and Diaz were replaced by Nunes, Boadi and Ndaye and tactically speaking
103
City moved away from their 3 -1 build -up towards a 3 -2 structure.
104
By bringing on Boadi for Shirky City gained an additional option in central midfield
105
and instead of relying on Anderson as the only player in front of the defensive line
106
they now had two players available to support the build -up guardio also stopped pushing forward into midfield
107
and remained in the defensive line
108
while nunes took on a more attacking role essentially city moved
109
from their attempted 3 -1 -3 -3 towards a 3 -2 -5 giving them more support centrally
110
and more options to progress the ball this immediately made
111
it much more difficult for psg to press them with two players available in the center
112
and city had an extra passing option meaning psg needed to commit another player forward
113
or leave someone free city's first goal also came soon after
114
the break with india delivering a great ball into the box for harlan to flick off
115
and for the first 15 minutes of the second half city looked far more dangerous
116
they had greater control in midfield more players supporting build -up
117
and more options to attack forward however as we've come to expect by now all
118
it takes for psg is one attacking move to instantly be dangerous
119
and we saw that in the goal that made it 4 -1.
120
With their first proper attack of the second half, Dembele finds Aklyush between the lines and continues his run forward out wide.
121
Dembele picks up the ball in space out wide and cuts it back to Aklyush,
122
whose incredible effort is saved by Donnarumma before eventually sneaking past him to make it 4 -1
123
and put the game to bed.
124
And it's a perfect example of why PSG are just so difficult to stop.
125
Even in a moment in the game where
126
Man City were dominant
127
and were looking to find their way back into the game all
128
it took was one move to psg to completely kill the game after
129
that goal city's dominance in the second half continued even though
130
they weren't really able to convert a lot of good opportunities
131
and having said that ferran torres actually missed the penalty to make it 5 -2 on the night
132
so ultimately psg's first half performance proved decisive their extremely organized press made
133
it incredibly difficult for man city to set up in their usual structure.
134
And in attack, PSG's rotations consistently overloaded
135
Man City in dangerous positions.
136
And even though Maresca was able to address some of the major issues in the second half,
137
PSG's ability to exploit space in transitions made them extremely dangerous for the whole game.
138
But what did you make of this game?
139
And do you think PSG could potentially go three
140
Champions Leagues in a row?
