Shadowing-Übung: How to Keep Talking in English Without Getting Stuck - Englisch Sprechen Lernen mit Video

Lektion wird erstellt...
1
Maybe you have studied English for years, but then one day you have to speak about a difficult topic,
2
something you know very little about.
3
So what do you think of historical novels?
4
You freeze.
5
You hesitate.
6
You go blank.
7
The thing is, you don't need to study more.
8
You need better strategies.
9
Right now, I'm going to give you two insanely useful strategies to help you talk fluently about any topic.
10
Hello, it's Keith from the Keith Speaking Academy, here to help you become a more confident speaker of English.
11
Have you ever been to a party or a conference
12
or an event where there's a conversation about a topic you know nothing about
13
and then people start asking you questions like this?
14
What do you think of the new Prime Minister?
15
Or you've been in the IELTS speaking test where the examiner asks you a topic you know very little about like this?
16
I'd like you to describe a biography you once read.
17
The thing is, in these situations, you need to improvise.
18
To speak off the cuff, nice expression, speak off the cuff, is to improvise.
19
There's no plan, just impromptu speaking.
20
Now, if you don't know anything about the topic, well, you're probably going to freeze
21
while you think about it and then you lose the person's attention
22
or you start to ramble and talk about nonsense and lose the person's attention.
23
Particularly frustrating in an English exam like the IELTS speaking exam because it just lowers your score.
24
So let me share with you a simple solution.
25
Two frameworks you can use for any topic, even if you know very little about it.
26
And at the end, I'll give you a research-backed tip to help you implement all of these.
27
Ready?
28
Let's do it.
29
Oh, and remember, there's a worksheet PDF you can get with lots more examples, so you really understand how these frameworks work.
30
And you can start practicing yourself with with the examples.
31
Without any further ado, let's get into it.
32
Okay, number one, the one, two, me framework.
33
Now, frameworks are great because without a framework, you don't know where to go and you freeze.
34
Frameworks give you simple steps to follow, something to hold onto, which helps you to start speaking.
35
So let me show you, I'll explain this framework.
36
I'll give you some of the English phrases you need to use it.
37
And let me then show you specific examples so you fully understand, okay.
38
Later, you can download the PDF and just practice this.
39
So the one to me framework, it's all about me.
40
One is you say one thing about it.
41
Two is you then give two opinions about it.
42
And then me, not three, me, is you say, me personally, what I think.
43
Okay, so let me give you some English phrases.
44
I call them continuity phrases.
45
What a great word, continuity.
46
You know the verb to continue.
47
So continuity is that state of continuing, right?
48
You want continuity in a story with the characters.
49
Continuity in your speech, so you can keep speaking at a high level.
50
Continuity phrases.
51
For the one thing, you can say, the one thing I know about this is, okay, for the two opinions,
52
you can say, there are two ways to look at this.
53
On the one hand, on the other hand, or there are two common opinions about this
54
and then me personally you can say me personally I think
55
okay let's look at a specific example for you what do
56
you think of the new prime minister well the one thing I know about our new prime minister is
57
that he has only been in office a few weeks.
58
There are two ways to look at our Prime Minister.
59
On the one hand, some people love him, but then lots of people hate him.
60
Me personally, I think it's too early to know if he's going to be effective or not.
61
Let's sit and wait.
62
Okay, so this framework has helped me get out some key ideas,
63
although I know nothing, very little about the new Prime Minister.
64
Let's look at an example from an IELTS speaking test.
65
So what do you think of historical novels?
66
Well, the one thing I know about historical novels is they seem to be very popular.
67
I see them a lot in the bookshops.
68
I think there are two ways to look at historical novels.
69
I guess on the one hand
70
if you're doing research into history they can be very useful
71
and on the other hand they can be an enjoyable read if you like history.
72
Me personally I'm not a big fan of history or historical novels.
73
I don't think I've ever read one.
74
Right, can you see how the framework is helping us to start talking and continue talking with these continuity phrases?
75
Let's move on to framework number two.
76
Okay, number two, the TKI framework.
77
Now, the secret about this framework, I guess all frameworks, is that it's a change of focus.
78
Instead of focusing on, I don't know anything about this, you switch your focus to, well, what do I know?
79
Even if it's just a little, you focus on what you know.
80
So again, let me show you this framework, what it means, some continuity phrases in English, and then a clear example to help you, okay?
81
So this is T-K-I-T is the truth.
82
you tell the truth that you know very little about this.
83
K is what I know.
84
So say something you already know about it, even if it's a little bit.
85
And number three is imagine what I imagine, right?
86
I've no experience of this, but if I had, or if I could, I would, and just imagine and make something up but
87
that the truth what you know and imagining beautiful framework to start speaking
88
some continuity phrases for you for the truth to be honest to be completely up front
89
i don't know much about this but okay so you kind of say on to be honest i don't know
90
anything about this but what I know number two one thing I do know is
91
one thing I can say is and then you say the little bit that you know number three imagine
92
if I was going to do this I would if I had to give my opinion I would say okay
93
Okay, specific example to make this clear.
94
Let's take this very difficult exam question.
95
I'd like you to describe a biography you once read.
96
So instead of going, you could say, to be honest, I have never read a biography.
97
One thing I do know is that a lot of famous people,
98
like politicians write biographies.
99
And I think they're popular because people want to learn from famous people.
100
If I was going to read a biography, I would probably read the biography by my favourite singer, Taylor Swift.
101
Okay, so we've got an answer.
102
You could carry on speaking.
103
Now you've had time to think, but this framework has helped you start speaking and expressing,
104
changing your focus from I know nothing to, well, what do I know?
105
I know something and building on that.
106
Let's move on.
107
Right, here's my tip to help you practice this.
108
And you can do this with any or either of the frameworks.
109
Try, repeat and improve.
110
The big mistake many students write preparing exams is that they write out the answer.
111
As soon as you write the answer, it is fixed.
112
It's permanent on paper or on screen and it's hard to change.
113
And so you start repeating and memorising the same answer.
114
Stop writing, start recording.
115
Record your answer because the voice disappears and then you're free to change and improve it.
116
So take the framework, take a question, take one of the frameworks, try it, record it, repeat your answer but improve it.
117
Don't repeat the same answer, improve it and improve it as you go along.
118
And one of the reasons this works is because when you repeat the second time, you don't need to think about the idea because you've done
119
that you can focus on the language on the english uh-huh right
120
and then improve it try repeat and improve
121
and that's going to build up your flexibility
122
and your confidence to use these frameworks um another tip i would say is also focus on the transition
123
so there are three steps
124
but you don't want the listener to think you're following steps you want to sound like a smooth flow.
125
So think about the transition, right?
126
Like, and, but, maybe, well,
127
and so, right, just connecting your ideas so it sounds smooth.
128
Does that make sense?
129
Excellent.
130
So there you have it, two frameworks to help you handle difficult topics and talk fluently on topics you don't know, okay?
131
You've got the 1-2-Me framework and the T-K-I framework.
132
Fix these in your head.
133
Start using them.
134
Download the PDF worksheet and you can start practicing these.
135
I focused on IELTS topics and questions, but you may get these in conversations in everyday life and at parties too, believe it or not.
136
okay download the pdf start practicing and start talking fluently about any topic at all
137
that's it for today thank you so much um for watching
138
and i look forward to seeing you maybe in the next video take care my friend bye
139
Thank you.

Was du in dieser Lektion übst

  • To speak off the cuff: Improvisieren, ohne vorbereitet zu sein. Beispiel: "Ich musste spontan off the cuff einen Vortrag halten."
  • Continuity phrases: Sätze, um das Gespräch am Laufen zu halten. Beispiel: "Als Nächstes...", "Was ich dazu sage..."
  • Framework: Ein strukturiertes Vorgehen. "Mit einem Framework weisst du, wie du weiterredest."
  • To freeze: Plötzlich nicht mehr weiterwissen. "Beim Prüfungsgespräch bin ich total gefroren."
  • Impromptu speaking: Spontanes Sprechen.
